Fish Consumption and Sustainability: A Modeling Study Evaluating the Effects of Fish and Canned Fish Consumption on Nutritional Adequacy and Selected Metrics of Environmental Impact.

Background/Objectives: Although aquatic foods are recognized for their nutritional value and relatively low environmental impact, their role in healthy and sustainable dietary patterns remains poorly characterized, particularly regarding canned fish products. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of increasing fresh and/or canned fish consumption within two healthy and sustainable dietary patterns representative of the Italian context, one EAT-Lancet-based (MED_EAT-IT) and one based on Italian Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs). Methods: Three alternative scenarios were generated for each

Sub-clinical neurobehavioral abnormalities associated with low level of mercury exposure through fish consumption.

In order to assess early neurotoxic effects associated with relatively low levels of mercury absorbed through fish eating, two groups of 22 adult male subjects, habitual consumers of tuna fish, and 22 controls were examined using a cross-sectional field study. The assessment included neurobehavioral tests of vigilance and psychomotor function, hand tremor measurements and serum prolactin assessment. Mercury in urine (U-Hg) and serum prolactin (sPRL) were measured in all exposed subjects and controls, whereas measurements of the organic component of mercury in blood (O-Hg) were available for on

Important variations in parvalbumin content in common fish species: a factor possibly contributing to variable allergenicity.

BACKGROUND: Although 95% of fish-allergic patients are sensitized to the major fish allergen parvalbumin, clinical reactions to different fish species vary considerably in symptoms, intensity and frequency in allergic subjects. This study aimed at the quantification of parvalbumin levels in salmon, trout, cod, carp, mackerel, herring, redfish and tuna. METHODS: Fish muscle extracts were separated by SDS-PAGE and parvalbumin content was estimated by densitometric band quantification. Individual antisera were raised in BALB/c mice against parvalbumins purified from seven fish species. Parvalbum

Use of entecavir in hepatitis B virus reactivation of a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

We read with interest the case report by Liu et al and the correspondence by Tuna et al regarding this case. Liu et al described hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after withdrawal of lamivudine prophylaxis. When HBV reactivation was observed three months after lamivudine withdrawal, entecavir 0.5 mg daily was started. HBV DNA level was moderately elevated (10(4) copies/mL) at that time. So, we could not understand why a potent antiviral like entecavir was required for this case. In addition to this, entecavir must be used at a dose of 1 mg in patient

Fish Oil Accelerates Diet-Induced Entrainment of the Mouse Peripheral Clock via GPR120.

The circadian peripheral clock is entrained by restricted feeding (RF) at a fixed time of day, and insulin secretion regulates RF-induced entrainment of the peripheral clock in mice. Thus, carbohydrate-rich food may be ideal for facilitating RF-induced entrainment, although the role of dietary oils in insulin secretion and RF-induced entrainment has not been described. The soybean oil component of standard mouse chow was substituted with fish or soybean oil containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Tuna oil (high DHA/EPA), menhaden oil (standard), and DHA/EPA di

Development and validation of an ion-pair chromatographic method for simultaneous determination of trans- and cis-urocanic acid in fish samples.

Urocanic acid (UCA) has been reported to be a mast cell degranulator and has also been suggested as a complementary agent in implicated scombroid fish poisoning. In this research, a new method is described to extract, clean up and perform simultaneous ion-pair chromatographic analysis of trans- and cis-urocanic acid (UCA) in fish samples. UCA was extracted using 0.05 M HCl and protein was removed from the extract by precipitation with 10% trisodium citrate and 10% citric acid. The HPLC method that is developed showed a rapid, precise and sensitive method with short retention time for simultane

[Surveillance of Total Mercury and Methylmercury Concentrations in Retail Fish].

Most fish samples contain methylmercury, that the concentrations very greatly according to the fish species. To avoid the adverse health effects of methylmercury while retaining the benefits provided by fish consumption, it is important to select suitable fish species and to control the amount of the fish intake. We surveyed the concentrations of total mercury and methylmercury in 210 retail fish samples classified into 19 fish species by using validated analytical methods. The results of this survey were as follows. The total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were higher than 1 mg/kg i

Total mercury intake from fish and shellfish by Japanese people.

Elevated mercury concentrations have been reported in fish in recent years. Japanese people eat a great deal of raw fishes and shellfishes as "Sashimi" and "Sushi". The action level of large predatory fish such as tuna with total mercury levels exceeding the Japanese maximum permitted limit of 0.4 ppm is exempted from regulation in Japan. Therefore, current total mercury intake from fish and shellfish of Japanese people is unknown. The purpose of this investigation was to estimate the total mercury intake from fish and shellfish. It was found that the mean total mercury concentration of 1.11 p

Effects of dietary and/or parental supplementation with selenium and mercury on their localisation in rainbow trout fry tissues (Oncorhynchus mykiss) by quantitative LA-ICP MS imaging.

The increasing use of alternative feeds for sustainable aquaculture leads to a reduced selenium content requiring the use of supplements to maintain the antioxidant status of farmed fish. The introduction of tuna by-products in fish feed is attractive for their selenium content, but the presence of mercury limits their use as it may negatively impact fish health. Indeed, selenium and mercury metabolism, in relation to their interaction and biological effects in fish, is far from being fully understood. This study aims to assess the impact of parental and dietary supplementation with selenometh

A Case of Suspected Scombroid Poisoning in Intensive Care Staff: Is It Anaphylaxis?

Scombroid poisoning (histamine fish poisoning) is an uncommon foodborne illness that frequently mimics immunoglobulin E-mediated anaphylaxis. We report a case of a previously well 28-year-old intensive care nurse who developed abrupt facial flushing, wheeze, dizziness, and hypotension after consuming canned tuna. Initial observations demonstrated sinus tachycardia and hypotension. She was treated according to established anaphylaxis guidelines with two doses of intramuscular adrenaline, intravenous crystalloid resuscitation, and subsequent adrenaline infusion in intensive care. She recovered r

SF2O-SKDCN: Selective kernel attention enabled deep learning framework for cardiovascular disease detection using photoplethysmography signals.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is a lethal disease that needs early intervention to prevent further harm and eventually safeguard patients' lives. Therefore, CVD detection is critical for effective disease management. Even though practical findings are made using traditional detection methods, they mostly struggle with overfitting risks, generalizability issues, and computational overhead challenges during the detection process. Therefore, the research proposes Sail Tuna Fish Foraging Optimized-Selective Kernel attention-enabled Deep Convolutional Neural Network (SF2O-SKDCN) that utilizes photop

IMEP-115: determination of methylmercury in seafood by elemental mercury analysis: collaborative study.

A collaborative study IMEP-115 was organized by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Heavy Metals in Feed and Food (EURL-HM) to validate a method for the determination of methylmercury in seafood. The method was based on a liquid-liquid extraction with an organic solvent and with an aqueous cysteine solution. The final quantitation was done with an elemental mercury analyzer. Fifteen laboratories experienced in elemental mercury analyses, from 10 European countries, took part in the exercise. Five test items were selected to cover the concentration range from 0.013 to 5.12 mg/kg. All te

Histamine fish poisoning: a common but frequently misdiagnosed condition.

Scombrotoxic or histamine fish poisoning is a common condition normally associated with consuming spoiled tuna, mackerel, bonito, or skipjack. Typical symptoms like flushing, urticaria, and palpitations mimic those of allergy so histamine fish poisoning can easily be misdiagnosed. Diagnosis is often clinical and the mainstay of treatment is antihistamines.

Climate change and overfishing increase neurotoxicant in marine predators.

More than three billion people rely on seafood for nutrition. However, fish are the predominant source of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxic substance. In the United States, 82% of population-wide exposure to MeHg is from the consumption of marine seafood and almost 40% is from fresh and canned tuna alone1. Around 80% of the inorganic mercury (Hg) that is emitted to the atmosphere from natural and human sources is deposited in the ocean2, where some is converted by microorganisms to MeHg. In predatory fish, environmental MeHg concentrations are amplified by a million t

Scombroid poisoning: prompt resolution of symptoms with cimetidine.

Ingestion of tainted fish of the tuna class may result in the toxic erythema and histamine overload of scombroid poisoning. We report four cases in which prompt resolution of symptoms was achieved by administration of intravenous cimetidine, with minimal side effects. A search of the literature failed to locate previous reports of the efficacy of cimetidine in the treatment of this syndrome.
