Findings from the 2023 YRBSS: Examining the risk factors of social media use, alcohol use, bullying and adolescent suicide.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health concerns in the U.S. continue to rise, with suicide remaining the second leading cause of death among youth. Identifying factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors is critical for prevention efforts. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS), a nationally representative survey of U.S. high school students. Multivariate logistic regression models assessed associations between self-reported frequency of social media use, school-based bullying, cyberbullying, and 30-day alcohol consumption with five r

Early and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug use in early adulthood in Ireland: a longitudinal analysis of a nationally representative cohort.

BACKGROUND: Early and risky adolescent alcohol use have each been associated with adult alcohol consumption. However, it remains unclear whether these behaviours independently predict later-life substance use when considered jointly, and research examining links with substances other than alcohol is limited. This study addresses these gaps by examining longitudinal associations between age at first alcohol and risky adolescent alcohol use, with alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug use in early adulthood, and aims to identify critical periods for public health interventions. METHODS: Grow

Socioemotional and Executive Control Mismatch in Adolescence and Risks for Initiating Drinking.

IMPORTANCE: Maturational imbalance between the expression of heightened socioemotional drivers and immature executive control creates a period of vulnerability to risk-taking behaviors during adolescence. Developmental imbalance of the brain functional activity coupled with these behaviors may explain the propensity to develop heavy drinking. OBJECTIVE: To compare the longitudinal trajectories of socioemotion and executive control in non-heavy drinkers with those of heavy drinkers before and after drinking onset. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted from January

Development of Comorbid Alcohol Use and Depressive Symptoms During Late Adolescence: Examining the Roles of Emotion Regulation and Gender Differences.

Depression and alcohol use are highly comorbid, and often emerge during adolescence. Depressive symptoms may precede alcohol use, via the self-medication pathway, or alcohol use may precede depressive symptoms, via the alcohol induced disruption pathway. Yet little is known about other risks for developing comorbidity via either path. The present study hypothesized that poor cognitive and physiological emotion regulation (ER) are risk factors implicated in the development of comorbid depression and alcohol use during late adolescence. Participants were 229 (113 girls) Mexican-origin youth who

"An escape from the isolation": Youth thoughts about the impact of COVID-19 on adolescent sexual behavior and alcohol use.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic likely affected adolescent sexual behaviors and alcohol use, although how is not well understood. METHOD: Youth were sampled from the national, online longitudinal Growing up with Media study. They responded via text messaging to open-ended questions about how the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the sexual behavior and alcohol use of adolescents. Conventional content analysis summarized open-ended responses. RESULTS: 416 responses were analyzed from 335 participants (aged 15-30, US residents), 81 of whom provided data for both topics. Participants sugg

Psychopathology as dynamic markers of alcohol initiation across development: A three-year longitudinal examination.

Sipping, an early form of alcohol initiation, is associated with aspects of psychopathology and personality that reflect long-term risk for harmful alcohol use. In the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development cohort (N = 11,872), sipping by age 9-10 was concurrently associated with impulsivity, other aspects of externalizing, and prodromal schizophrenia symptoms. Still, these associations were cross-sectional in nature, leaving open the possibility that these features of psychopathology and personality might not reflect long-term risk for alcohol consumption and related harm across developme

Acute alcohol intoxication among adolescents in Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium: a cross-national hospital chart comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Excessive drinking among adolescents in Western Europe is prevalent, posing significant health risks and societal costs. Comprehensive data on adolescent drinking patterns is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. Data on alcohol intoxication among adolescents provide valuable insights in this context. METHODS: To gain insight into the demographic and clinical characteristics of acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) across European countries, we analysed emergency department data on AAI among adolescents (aged 14-17) from 2015 to 2023 in three urban regions: Genoa (Ita

Sports participation moderates the risk of family-specific negative life events on alcohol use among adolescents: Evidence from the longitudinal MyLife study.

Negative life events (NLE) have been associated with increased alcohol use (AU) during adolescence. However, whether this risk association may be modified by leisure activities such as sports participation (SP) remains poorly understood. This study examined whether accumulated family-specific NLE in particular were associated with greater AU, and if so, whether SP moderated this association to reduce AU among high-NLE adolescents. We examined five annual assessments from a nationwide cohort of 3,422 Norwegian adolescents (13-15 year-olds; 55.3 % girls at baseline) who participated in the MyLif

Leveraging bifactor modeling to test prospective direct and indirect effects of adolescent alcohol use and externalizing symptoms on the development of task-general executive functioning.

Adolescence is a period of substantial maturation in brain regions underlying Executive Functioning (EF). Adolescence is also associated with initiation and escalation of Alcohol Use (AU), and adolescent AU has been proposed to produce physiological and neurobiological events that derail healthy EF development. However, support has been mixed, which may be due to (1) failure to consider co-occurring externalizing symptoms (including other drug use) and poor social adaptation, and (2) heterogeneity and psychometric limitations in EF measures. We aimed to clarify the AU-EF association by: (1) di

Across the multiverse: exploring a diverse set of specifications related to cross-sectional and prospective associations between adolescent alcohol use and emotional problems.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between adolescent alcohol use and emotional problems remains unclear and contradictory. These inconsistencies may in part be due to differences in the measurement and operationalization of alcohol use and emotional problems across studies, as well as confounder selection and missing data decisions. This study explores the associations between common specifications of adolescent alcohol use and emotional problems in a large sample of adolescents. METHODS: A multiverse analysis (also known as specification curve analysis or vibration of effects) was done with 7680

Too much or too little? A short-term longitudinal study of youth's own economic resources and risk behaviour.

This study examined socioeconomic differences in risk behaviours according to youth-oriented measures of economic resources. Using a representative sample of Swedish adolescents (n = 3,939, 51% females), the associations that youth's own economy shared with smoking, drinking and conduct problems were examined. Data was based on population register and self-report information when participants were in grades 8 (T1 aged 14-15) and 9 (T2 aged 15-16). Missing activities due to financial constraints and having a cash margin were each positively associated with concurrent risk behaviours. However, l

Brain network features predating early alcohol initiation in adolescence.

Emerging evidence suggests regional neuroanatomical variability may be predictive of early alcohol use (before age 15). However, the relationship between whole-brain network organization and early alcohol initiation remains unknown. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, we conducted a structural covariance network (SCN) analysis to examine brain network features preceding early alcohol initiation. Structural MRI data collected at baseline (ages 9-10) were used to generate SCNs based on regional cortical thickness measurements. Early alcohol initiation was def

Family incarceration and adolescent nicotine, alcohol, and cannabis use: A coarsened exact matching approach.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence overwhelmingly indicates that adverse childhood experiences (ACE), a set of highly correlated traumatic events experienced before age 18, increase risk for adolescent substance use. However, few studies have examined the association of family/household member incarceration (FI) and early substance use initiation (≤14 years old) and past 30-day substance use accounting for other ACE, demographic characteristics, and socio-economic status. To fill this gap, we used a matching method to explore the unique effect of FI on early substance use initiation and past 30-day use am

Drivers of adolescent chasing behavior: The role of craving, decision-making, alcohol use, and gambling severity.

Craving and impaired decision-making are hallmark features of addiction, playing a prominent role in gambling disorder. These factors are central to loss-chasing behavior, a core diagnostic criterion of gambling dependence characterized by persistent attempts to recover prior losses. This study examines the interplay of craving, affective decision-making, decision-making styles, alcohol use, and gambling severity in chasing behavior among 272 Italian adolescents aged 14-19. Participants completed validated measures, including the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents (SOGS-RA), Io

Interactive Effects of Maternal Alcohol Problems and Parental Separation on Timing of Daughter's First Drink.

BACKGROUND: Few studies examine risk to offspring who experience both parental alcohol problems and parental separation and still fewer consider gender of the affected parent. We examined interactive effects of maternal versus paternal alcohol problems and parental separation on timing of first alcoholic drink in daughters. METHODS: Data were drawn from a sample of 3,539 European (or other) ancestry (EA) and 611 African ancestry (AA) female twins born between 1975 and 1985, median age 15 at first assessment. Cox proportional hazards regression models were estimated predicting age at first ful

Beyond Tobacco Prevention: The Effects of Tobacco 21 Laws on Young Adults' Body Weight.

Tobacco 21 (T21) laws effectively reduce youth tobacco use by preventing initiation. This study examines their impact on body weight among young adults aged 18-20. Using 2009-2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data and a two-way fixed-effects difference-in-differences (DID) design, we find limited evidence of broad weight changes in either direction across the BMI distribution. Obesity declines due to modest weight reductions concentrated near the upper BMI threshold, with no significant changes in overweight status or average BMI. Event study shows that the obesity decline emerge

An analysis of the novice motorcyclist crashes in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: Motorcycles comprised over 60% of motor vehicles in Taiwan. There were still many motorcycle crashes in Taiwan, especially among young riders. This study investigated the characteristics of novice motorcyclist crashes in Taiwan over the period January 2011 to December 2016. Various risk factors affecting the severity of novice motorcyclist crashes, such as the rider characteristics, licensing conditions, and the environment, were examined. METHODS: To model the count data with multiple crash severities, several regression models were considered. The multinomial logit (MNL) model, o

Casino Gambling in Adolescents: Gambling-Related Attitudes and Behaviors and Health and Functioning Relationships.

Recreational and problem gambling have been linked with adverse health and functioning outcomes among adolescents. Youth may gamble and engage in other risk-taking behaviors in casinos. There are limited data available regarding casino gambling in high-school students, and factors linked to adolescent gambling in casinos have yet to be systematically investigated. To address this gap, we analyzed cross-sectional data from 2010 Connecticut high-school students with chi-square tests and logistic regression models to examine casino gambling in relation to at-risk/problem gambling (ARPG) with resp
