BIA: Behavior Identification Algorithm Using Unsupervised Learning Based on Sensor Data for Home Elderly.

Behavior identification plays an important role in supporting homecare for the elderly living alone. In literature, plenty of algorithms have been designed to identify behaviors of the elderly by learning features or extracting patterns from sensor data. However, most of them adopted probabilistic models or supervised learning to identify behaviors based on labeled sensor data. This paper proposes a behavior identification algorithm (BIA) using unsupervised learning based on unlabeled sensor data for the elderly living alone in smart home. This paper presents the observation of elder behaviors

Unsupervised learning for large-scale corneal topography clustering.

Machine learning algorithms have recently shown their precision and potential in many different use cases and fields of medicine. Most of the algorithms used are supervised and need a large quantity of labeled data to achieve high accuracy. Also, most applications of machine learning in medicine are attempts to mimic or exceed human diagnostic capabilities but little work has been done to show the power of these algorithms to help collect and pre-process a large amount of data. In this study we show how unsupervised learning can extract and sort usable data from large unlabeled datasets with m

Predicting ultrasound wave stimulated bone growth in bioinspired scaffolds using machine learning.

For conditions like osteoporosis, changes in bone pore geometry even when porosity is constant have been shown to correlate to increased fracture risk using techniques such as dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and computed tomography (CT). Additionally, studies have found that bone pore geometry can be characterized by ultrasound to determine fracture risk, since certain pore geometries can cause stress concentration which in turn will be a source for fracture. However, it is not yet fully understood if changes in pore geometry can be detected by ultrasound when the porosity is constant.

Pharmacophenotype identification of intensive care unit medications using unsupervised cluster analysis of the ICURx common data model.

BACKGROUND: Identifying patterns within ICU medication regimens may help artificial intelligence algorithms to better predict patient outcomes; however, machine learning methods incorporating medications require further development, including standardized terminology. The Common Data Model for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Medications (CDM-ICURx) may provide important infrastructure to clinicians and researchers to support artificial intelligence analysis of medication-related outcomes and healthcare costs. Using an unsupervised cluster analysis approach in combination with this common data model,

Semantic Augmentation Variational Autoencoder for Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in Retinal OCT Images.

Performing unsupervised anomaly detection in retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images involves training a model solely on anomaly-free samples and detecting anomalies during inference, which reduces the cost of collecting large-scale annotated anomalous data. However, retinal OCT images exhibit significant variations in shape, thickness, and orientation, and lesions often have similar reflectance signals as normal tissues, making anomaly localization highly challenging. Existing methods address these challenges by flattening retinal layers, normalizing thickness, or leveraging reflect

A multi-module algorithm for heartbeat classification based on unsupervised learning and adaptive feature transfer.

The scarcity of annotated data is a common issue in the realm of heartbeat classification based on deep learning. Transfer learning (TL) has emerged as an effective strategy for addressing this issue. However, current TL techniques in this realm overlook the probability distribution differences between the source domain (SD) and target domain (TD) databases. The motivation of this paper is to address the challenge of labeled data scarcity at the model level while exploring an effective method to eliminate domain discrepancy between SD and TD databases, especially when SD and TD are derived fro

Comparative genomics of Glandirana rugosa using unsupervised AI reveals a high CG frequency.

The Japanese wrinkled frog (Glandirana rugosa) is unique in having both XX-XY and ZZ-ZW types of sex chromosomes within the species. The genome sequencing and comparative genomics with other frogs should be important to understand mechanisms of turnover of sex chromosomes within one species or during a short period. In this study, we analyzed the newly sequenced genome of G. rugosa using a batch-learning self-organizing map which is unsupervised artificial intelligence for oligonucleotide compositions. To clarify genome characteristics of G. rugosa, we compared its short oligonucleotide compos

BACKGROUND: Advanced echocardiographic techniques such as Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) can detect more subtle changes in ventricular performance. We aimed to study the ventricular performance in patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) at mid-term follow-up after the arterial switch operation (ASO) with advanced echocardiographic techniques. In addition, we sought to discover new clinical phenotypes using unsupervised machine learning. METHODS: Conventional, TDI and STE echocardiographic parameters were prospectively obtained from 124

Identification of PsA phenotypes with machine learning analytics using data from two phase III clinical trials of guselkumab in a bio-naïve population of patients with PsA.

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) phenotypes are typically defined by their clinical components, which may not reflect patients' overlapping symptoms. This post hoc analysis aimed to identify hypothesis-free PsA phenotype clusters using machine learning to analyse data from the phase III DISCOVER-1/DISCOVER-2 clinical trials. METHODS: Pooled data from bio-naïve patients with active PsA receiving guselkumab 100 mg every 8/4 weeks were retrospectively analysed. Non-negative matrix factorisation was applied as an unsupervised machine learning technique to identify PsA phenotype clusters; bas

Object-guided multi-granularity unsupervised hashing for image retrieval.

Hashing has attracted great attention for large-scale image retrieval due to its low storage cost and high search efficiency. However, most unsupervised hashing methods construct the affinity matrix according to the cosine similarity, which achieves poor performance to measure the semantic similarities among the images. On the other hand, contrastive learning based unsupervised hashing faces the challenge to leverage the positive and negative examples which may be unbalanced and fallible. In this paper, we propose a novel Object-guided Multi-granularity Unsupervised Hashing (OMUH) method based

Deep Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Translating Cancer Dependency Maps From Cell Lines to Breast Cancer Tumor Genomics.

The Cancer dependency maps (DepMap) identify genetic dependencies in cancer cells using large-scale loss-of-function screens, providing a foundation for cancer-specific treatment strategies. However, discrepancies exist between cancer cell line models (CCLs) and patient-derived tumor models, particularly in translating findings to clinical settings. To bridge this gap, computational approaches such as artificial intelligence-based domain adaptation can assist in aligning laboratory and patient-derived molecular data, thereby improving the translation of preclinical findings into personalized t

Unsupervised learning reveals rapid gait adaptation after leg loss and regrowth in spiders.

Many invertebrates voluntarily lose (autotomize) limbs during antagonistic encounters, and some regenerate functional replacements. Because limb loss can have severe consequences on individual fitness, it is likely subject to significant selective pressures, making this an excellent phenomenon with which to investigate biomechanical robustness. Spiders frequently autotomize one or more legs. We investigated the time course of locomotor recovery after leg loss and regeneration in juvenile tarantulas (Arachnida: Araneae) naive to autotomy. We recorded high-speed video of spiders running with all

Unsupervised learning for real-time and continuous gait phase detection.

Individuals with lower limb impairment after a stroke or spinal cord injury require rehabilitation, but traditional methods can be challenging for both patients and therapists. Robotic systems have been developed to help; however, they currently cannot detect the continuous gait phase in real time, hindering their effectiveness. To address this limitation, researchers have attempted to develop gait phase detection in general using fuzzy logic algorithms and neural networks. However, there is a paucity of research on real-time and continuous gait phase detection. In light of this gap, we propos

Clinical phenotypes among patients with normal cardiac perfusion using unsupervised learning: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is one of the most common cardiac scans and is used for diagnosis of coronary artery disease and assessment of cardiovascular risk. However, the large majority of MPI patients have normal results. We evaluated whether unsupervised machine learning could identify unique phenotypes among patients with normal scans and whether those phenotypes were associated with risk of death or myocardial infarction. METHODS: Patients from a large international multicenter MPI registry (10 sites) with normal perfusion by expert visual interpretation were included

TriLA: Triple-Level Alignment Based Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Joint Segmentation of Optic Disc and Optic Cup.

Cross-domain joint segmentation of optic disc and optic cup on fundus images is essential, yet challenging, for effective glaucoma screening. Although many unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods have been proposed, these methods can hardly achieve complete domain alignment, leading to suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a triple-level alignment (TriLA) model to address this issue by aligning the source and target domains at the input level, feature level, and output level simultaneously. At the input level, a learnable Fourier domain adaptation (LFDA) module is developed to
