Uric acid has antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. A number of studies show that high levels of uric acid may have a positive influence on the course of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), especially in males. The frequency of ALS is lower in patients with gout than in the general population. We present a case of a patient with gout and slowly progressive ALS. More research is needed on the potential role of uric acid in ALS and other neurodegenerative disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify a protein for urate transporter 1 (URAT1) regulation.
METHODS: The clinical dataset consisted of 492 case-control samples of Han Chinese (104 gout and 388 controls). Three alpha kinase 1 ( ALPK1 ) and SLC22A12 loci associated with high gout risk and uric acid levels were genotyped. The overexpression of ALPK1 on URAT1 protein expression was evaluated in vivo in h ALPK1 transgenic mice. The in vitro protein levels of ALPK1 and URAT1 in ALPK1 small interfering RNA-transfected human kidney-2 cells with MSU crystal stimulation were examined.

PURPOSE: Malignancy can be associated with high levels of catabolic products. We performed a two-part study. To determine whether the plasma level of uridine can be used to identify patients with gout, the plasma concentration of uridine was determined in patients with gout and normal subjects. Uric acid (UA) is a water-soluble antioxidant in human body fluids. In umbilical cord blood of 172 neonates with gestational ages between 22 and 42 weeks, UA concentrations were between 50 and 990 mumol/l. There was no correlation with gestational age. Aqueous humor was taken from 32 patients with senile and presenile cataract at the operation by means of anterior chamber puncture. Uric acid was marked by indirect method with uricase. The mean content of uric acid in aqueous humor of patients with cataract was 187.13 mumol/l and in the control group 309.34 mumol/l. The difference between the groups is statistically significant. The results suggest that uric acid as strong endogenous antioxidant may play an important role in pathogenesis of cataract.
