We carried out a retrospective analysis of 581 patients with uveitis seen over an 11-year period, to determine the prevalence of HIV infection in these patients and to look for associated diseases and the possible causes of uveitis in HIV-infected patients. All patients underwent routine eye examination and most also underwent a general examination and complementary tests. The prevalence of HIV infection was 14.3% (89 patients). Anterior uveitis (62%) was the most frequent, followed by posterior uveitis (22%), panuveitis (12%) and intermediate uveitis (4%). Associated conditions or causes were

Uveitis is the inflammation of the uveal tract (i.e., iris, ciliary body, and choroid). Uveitis is categorized into the following three types based on the anatomical location of inflammation: anterior, intermediate, and posterior uveitis. Severe cases may lead to panuveitis, where all three layers may become inflamed potentially resulting in permanent vision loss. Uveitis can arise from different underlying disorders, including infectious causes or autoimmune disorders. Syphilis and Lyme disease are uncommon causes of uveitis. Eye involvement can occur at any stage in Lyme disease, characteriz

The association of uveitis and multiple sclerosis (MS) is less well known than the association between optic neuritis and MS even though MS patients suffer ten times more often from uveitis than the normal population. In this group of patients, intermediate uveitis presenting with periphlebitis and "snowbanks" or "snowballs", as well as granulomatous anterior uveitis play an important role. Simultaneous occurrence of MS and uveitis could be due to the fact that both neural and ocular tissues have the same embryological origin or could be the consequence of an immunological reaction following a

IMPORTANCE: Big data studies may allow for the aggregation of patients with rare diseases such as uveitis to answer important clinical questions. Standardization of uveitis-related variables will be necessary, including the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes used to identify patients of interest. There are currently limited data on the uniformity of diagnosis mapping to ICD-10 codes for uveitis diagnoses among different health systems.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the degree of uniformity in mapping of uveitis clinical conce

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uveal tissue: iris, ciliary body and choroid. The annual incidence of uveitis in France is low (17/100,000), but visual and therapeutic consequences may be severe. Etiologic investigation is thus a fundamental step in the management of any uveitis. The history plays an important role in the initial evaluation; it must be methodic. The ophthalmologic examination seeks to classify the uveitis by type (granulomatous or not), location (anterior, intermediate or posterior), severity, duration and recurrence. Systemic signs often orient the diagnosis toward a specif

The diagnosis of Behçet disease is clinical and based on the presence of characteristic ocular and systemic inflammatory manifestations. Patients may present with anterior, posterior, or panuveitis in one or both eyes. The differential diagnosis includes a variety of infectious and noninfectious causes of acute nongranulomatous anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, occlusive retinal vasculitis, focal or multifocal retinitis, and necrotizing retinitis. A course characterized by sudden onset with improvement followed by recurrence of inflammatory signs is most typical for Behçet uveitis.
