[Evaluation of direct microscopic examination, acridine orange staining and culture methods for studies of Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal discharge specimens].

Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of human trichomoniasis which is a sexually transmitted disease mainly in women. The infection may be asymptomatic or symptomatic such as severe vaginitis and cervicitis. The aim of this study was to compare direct microscopic examination, acridine orange stained examination and culture in Modified Diamond medium, for the detection of T. vaginalis from the vaginal swab samples of 310 patients (age ranges: 17-45 years old) who were complaining from vaginal discharge. Of them 40 (12.9%) samples were found positive with culture, 20 (6.5%) were positive

Implementing point-of-care tests to optimize antibiotic use for vaginal discharge: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal discharge (VD) is a common health concern among women of reproductive age worldwide. In low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs), one in four women experiences distressing VD which may indicate underlying infections. About one-third of these cases are caused by one of three curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs)-Chlamydia trachomatis [Ct], Neisseria gonorrhea [Ng], Trichomonas vaginalis [Tv]-or by bacterial vaginosis (BV). Syndromic management, the standard approach to care in LLMICs, relies on empirical antibiotic treatment, often resulting in overtreatment

First detection of multidrug-resistant and toxigenic Pasteurella aerogenes in sow vaginal discharge: a novel threat to swine health in Thailand.

Pasteurella aerogenes has been implicated in reproductive disorders in sows, yet its prevalence and characteristics in vaginal discharge are not well understood. This study aimed to detect P. aerogenes in sow vaginal discharge samples and investigate its antibiotic resistance profile, toxin genes, and toxicity. P. aerogenes was isolated from 40% (8/20) of samples. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed universal resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanate (4:1), with 87.5% of isolates also resistant to oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone, and enrofloxacin. The colistin resistance gene m

Why do women complain of vaginal discharge? A population survey of infectious and pyschosocial risk factors in a South Asian community.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal discharge is a common complaint, particularly among women in Asia. Although presumed to be caused by reproductive tract infections (RTIs), the association between the complaint and the presence of RTIs is weak. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors of the complaint of vaginal discharge. METHODS: We conducted a community-based survey of 3000 women aged 18-50 years, randomly sampled from a population in Goa, India. Women who gave informed consent were invited to participate in a structured interview, which elicited data on the primary outcome (the experience of cu

A pilot study on bacterial isolates associated with purulent vaginal discharge in dairy cows in the south-west region of Western Australia.

This study aimed to determine the bacterial isolates associated with postpartum endometritis among dairy cows in Western Australia and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. A cross-sectional study was conducted between June-October 2020. Endometritis was defined as evidence of mucopurulent to purulent vaginal discharge 60-100 days postpartum. Vaginal discharge samples were obtained, cultured, identified and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. A total of 118 bacterial isolates were grown from 46 animals, representing 36 species. The bacteria isolated from both aerobic and anaerobic

[The practice guideline 'Vaginal discharge' (first revision) from the Dutch College of General Practitioners; a response from the perspective of general practice].

The revised practice guideline by the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG) on vaginal discharge is intended to offer general practitioners a handle for management of vaginal complaints. Most general practitioners experience uncertainties in daily practice with respect to the diagnosis of vaginal discharge. In most cases history taking and physical examination fails to provide sufficient valuable information to arrive at a definite diagnosis. No further (microscopic) investigation is only permissible in a very obvious infection with Candida albicans. A recent onset of complaints of itch

Reduction in overtreatment of gonorrhoea and chlamydia through point-of-care testing compared with syndromic management for vaginal discharge: a modelling study for Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe's national guidelines for sexually transmitted infection (STI) management recommend that high-risk women presenting with vaginal discharge syndrome (VDS) are prescribed antibiotics for gonorrhoea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG)), chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)), trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis (TV)) and bacterial vaginosis (BV). The performance of this approach depends on its clinical interpretation and implementation. Here, we investigate the potential relative impact of an NG/CT/TV point-of-care (POC) test on undertreatment, overtreatment and disease burden in t

Prevalence of common bacterial STI pathogens and the microscopic diagnostic approach to abnormal vaginal discharge in a tertiary care hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

In Thailand, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) persist as a significant public health issue, notwithstanding the affordability of treatments. The primary challenge lies in diagnostic methodologies. According to the Thai National Treatment Guidelines for abnormal vaginal discharge, wet preparation using proportion of white blood cell (WBC) counts and epithelial cell (EC) guides presumptive STI treatment. This study investigated the prevalence of common STI pathogens in sexually active women presenting with abnormal vaginal discharge and WBC > EC under microscopy; and the cost-minimization

Technical note: Intraobserver, interobserver, and test-retest reliabilities of an assessment of vaginal discharge from cows with and without acute puerperal metritis.

Acute puerperal metritis (APM) in dairy cows is a common disease occurring in the first 10 d after calving. According to a widely accepted definition, the diagnosis is primarily based on body temperature and sensorial assessment of vaginal discharge. The scope of this study was to evaluate the reliability for color, smell, and viscosity of vaginal discharge from healthy cows and cows with APM. Fifteen investigators evaluated 6 vaginal discharge samples 10 times. Subsequently, the investigators rated the health status of the cows and the diagnostic value of color, smell, and viscosity. In a fin

Symptomatic vaginal discharge is a poor predictor of sexually transmitted infections and genital tract inflammation in high-risk women in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a public health priority, particularly in regions where the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is high. In most developing countries, STIs are managed syndromically. We assessed the adequacy of syndromic diagnosis of STIs, compared with laboratory diagnosis of STIs, and evaluated the association between STI diagnosis and the risk of HIV acquisition in a cohort of high-risk women. METHODS: HIV-uninfected high-risk women (n = 242) were followed for 24 months. Symptoms of STIs were recorded, a

2018 European (IUSTI/WHO) International Union against sexually transmitted infections (IUSTI) World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline on the management of vaginal discharge.

Four common pathological conditions are associated with vaginal discharge: bacterial vaginosis, aerobic vaginitis, candidosis, and the sexually transmitted infection, trichomoniasis. Chlamydial or gonococcal cervical infection may result in vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge may be caused by a range of other physiological and pathological conditions including atrophic vaginitis, desquamative inflammatory vaginitis, cervicitis, and mucoid ectopy. Psychosexual problems may present with recurrent episodes of vaginal discharge and vulval burning. These need to be considered if tests for specific
