Vulvar disease is common, and urologists are often the first providers to see patients with a vulvar skin condition. Primary vulvar dermatoses can be localized to the anogenital area or a manifestation of more diffuse cutaneous disease. Additionally, secondary dermatoses can develop from exogenous agents and inflammatory vaginitis. Vulvar conditions are challenging to diagnose due to location and different types of skin and mucosal epithelium involved. Herein, we provide an overview of noninfectious inflammatory vulvar dermatoses (part I) and benign and malignant vulvar neoplasms (part II), gr

Adenosarcomas are biphasic neoplasms that usually originate in the uterine corpus and comprise a benign epithelial component and a malignant stromal component. Uterine adenosarcomas typically present with abnormal genital bleeding, an enlarged uterus, and a tumor that protrudes into the endometrial cavity. These tumors rarely protrude through the cervical os and are often misdiagnosed as cervical polyps. We present the case of a patient with cervical adenosarcoma with characteristics different from those reported in previous cases. This tumor showed endophytic growth, which is rare in cervical

BACKGROUND: Gynecologic neoplasms are rare in children and represent only less than 5% of all childhood tumors. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the female genital tract of children accounts for only 3.5% of the cases.
CASE: A 16-year-old adolescent presented with a proliferating growth and foul smelling discharge from her vagina, which, on biopsy was diagnosed as RMS. She received chemotherapy and radiation to the primary site. She is alive in remission at 8 years, and with normal menstrual function.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: RMS of the vagina is a rare, but highly curable tumor in adolescent girls.

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma is a rare variant of cervical carcinoma with relatively few, well-documented cases reported. We describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 11 examples of this neoplasm, which occurred in women between the ages of 35 and 72 years (mean, 52 years). Most (64%) patients had abnormal vaginal bleeding. Eight tumors were stage IB, and one each was stage IIB and IVB; in one, the stage was unknown. Microscopically, the carcinomas showed various morphologies, most commonly a small tubular pattern or a ductal pattern resembling endometrioid adenocarcinom

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate reproductive performance of women with didelphic uterus and to consider possible long-term consequences associated with this uterine anomaly.
STUDY DESIGN: Forty-nine women were diagnosed as having a didelphic uterus with a longitudinal vaginal septum at Tampere University Hospital, Finland between 1962 and 1998. The presence of other anomalies, gynecologic disorders, fertility and outcome of pregnancies were reviewed. The long-term clinical implications associated with a didelphic uterus were evaluated during the mean (S.D.) follow-up period of

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor formed by the abnormal proliferation of immature myeloid cells. It can occur concurrently with or secondary to various myeloid neoplasms, most commonly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Cervical involvement is extremely rare, and its clinical presentation often mimics that of primary gynecologic malignancies, typically manifesting as vaginal bleeding, a palpable cervical mass, or cervical enlargement.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with a history of AML who had received multiple lines of chemotherapy and

We present a rare case of a 68-year-old female with urinary retention and a peri-urethral mass. The patient, with a history of thoracic aortic aneurysm, was referred to urology after a urethral mass was incidentally detected on CT imaging during aneurysm surveillance. Pelvic MRI identified a 4.8 cm circumferential, enhancing mass along the proximal urethra. A transvaginal ultrasound-guided biopsy confirmed a low-grade smooth muscle neoplasm, consistent with leiomyoma. The mass was successfully excised via a transvaginal approach. This case highlights the importance of a broad differential in f

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is the most common congenital neoplasm in neonates. We came across a post term (42 weeks) newborn baby girl delivered by normal vaginal route. The baby presented with a large soft, cystic mass over the sacrococcygeal region. Radiological examination showed a soft tissue mass with variegated appearance. Complete excision of the mass was done. Histopathological examination revealed the mass to be a mature sacrococcygeal teratoma with the extremely uncommon finding of a complete adrenal gland within the teratoma sac. Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a component of a continuum wi

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare two groups of patients with early stage cervical cancer who underwent either abdominal or vaginal surgery, in terms of post-operative findings and survival.
MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: 55 patients with diagnosed cervical cancer were retrospectively selected for this study. They were preoperatively staged according to FIGO criteria. Forty four patients had disease between stages Ib and IIa with no evidence of extra-pelvic lymph node involvement and 10 patients had stage ≥ IIb.
RESULTS: Of the 55 patients, 17 had been operated by Schauta-Amreic

Preoperative diagnosis of fallopian tube carcinoma is difficult due to the rarity and silent course of this neoplasm. We present herein the case of a 58-year-old woman with primary fallopian tube carcinoma that was diagnosed preoperatively on the basis of a positive for adenocarcinoma Papanicolaou vaginal smear, repeated episodes of vaginal bleeding, negative endocervical and endometrial curettage, characteristic features on ultrasonography and elevated CA-125 levels. The patient was treated by total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpigno-oophorectomy and omentectomy. Pathologic confirmati

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (Schmincke's tumor) is a relatively common malignancy in the upper respiratory tract (nasopharynx), but it rarely occurs at other sites. We describe here the first case of a vaginal neoplasm that closely resembled lymphoepithelial carcinoma in its histological features and immunophenotype. The tumor was detected in an 81-year-old woman who presented with recurrent vaginal bleeding. On colposcopy, an ulcerated polypoid tumor mass was seen in the posterior wall of the middle portion of the vagina. Histologic examination revealed an undifferentiated spindle-cell carcino

BACKGROUND: Non-puerperal uterine inversion is a rare condition with diagnostic and surgical challenges. Clinically, the inverted uterus appears as a mass protruding from the vagina and is often misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor and surgically removed.
CASE: An 11-year-old girl was admitted to the emergency room due to spontaneous vaginal mass protrusion. The pudendum examination showed an irregular and dark red neoplasm protruding from the vagina. The final diagnosis was non-puerperal uterine inversion with an endometrial polyp.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: MRI is the key to the diagnosis of ute

The melanocytic cells of the cervical epithelium are capable of forming the complete spectrum of melanocytic lesions, from benign lentigines to melanoma. Primary malignant melanoma of the uterine cervix is a rare neoplasm with aggressive behavior. The absence of melanin pigment can lead to misdiagnosis as carcinomas, sarcomas, or lymphoma. Immunohistochemical studies should be used for confirmation. In order to consent the cervix as a primary site, exclusion of any other probable primary sites of melanoma is needed. Here, we present a 61-year-old female patient with postmenopausal vaginal blee

INTRODUCTION: Little is known regarding the impact of a sexual health program on the sexual functioning of patients with a history of a gynecologic malignancy.
AIM: To evaluate as a pilot study the prevalence of common sexual health symptoms and evaluate the effects and compliance with clinical recommendations in gynecologic oncology patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 259 female cancer patients who attended a survivorship program at an academic medical center from March 1, 2003 through December 31, 2004. Patients received symptomatic treatment recommendations including hormon

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is an extramedullary accumulation of proliferating myeloblasts, most commonly seen in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but rarely associated with chronic myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, or myeloproliferative neoplasms. The skin is the most frequent site of extramedullary relapse, followed by the mediastinum, gingiva, ear, lymph nodes, central nervous system, and testis. We report a case of a 38-year-old female who presented to our clinic with abnormal vaginal bleeding. She had a history of bone marrow transplantation 5 years ago for AML. Based o

Ovarian granulosa cell tumors represent uncommon neoplasms with estrogen-secreting capacity. Due to their association with persistently increased levels of estrogen, modifications of the endometrial tissue ranging from hyperplasia to malignant degeneration may be encountered. We present the case of a 65-year-old patient who presented for post-menopausal vaginal bleeding. The endometrial biopsy raised the suspicion of an atypical endometrial hyperplasia and the patient was submitted to surgery. Histopathological studies of the specimen of total hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy revealed t
