Diet Quality, Food Processing, and Nutrient Adequacy in Vegan, Vegetarian, and Omnivorous Dietary Patterns: A Critical Narrative Review.

Vegan and vegetarian dietary patterns have moved from minority dietary choices to central elements of contemporary nutritional guidance, supported by observational cohorts, short-term randomised trials, and umbrella-level evidence (i.e., syntheses of multiple systematic reviews) reporting favourable associations with body weight, blood lipids, blood pressure, glycaemic control, and inflammatory markers. Recent direct comparisons against healthy omnivorous comparators-including the OMNIVEG controlled crossover transitioning from a traditional to a vegan Mediterranean diet and the Landry identic

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian and vegan diets in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis of nutritional and health outcomes.

The health implications of lacto-ovo-vegetarian and vegan diets in childhood remain debated. This meta-analysis compares lacto-ovo-vegetarian and vegan diets with omnivorous diets across a wide spectrum of nutrients and health outcomes among children <18 years worldwide without chronic disease. Searches in MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to March 2025 identified 59 studies including 48,626 participants (7,280 lacto-ovo-vegetarians, 1289 vegans, and 40,059 omnivores). Lacto-ovo-vegetarian children consumed less energy, protein, fat, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and zinc, but more fibe

Associations between vegetarianism, body mass index, and eating disorders/disordered eating behaviours: a systematic review of literature.

The vegetarian diet is becoming increasingly popular among the general population and has been accompanied by an increasing number of publications in the last twenty years. However, the spread of selective diets raises some questions, especially with regard to health. This review examines studies on vegetarianism published between 2000 and 2022 that investigated the associations between this diet, weight, and eating disorders. The descriptive studies conclude that vegetarians have a lower body mass index, and the interventional studies show the value of a vegetarian diet for weight loss. While

Vegetarian diets in childhood and adolescence : Position paper of the nutrition committee, German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ).

In Western countries, vegetarian diets are associated with lower intakes of energy, saturated fatty acids and animal protein and higher intakes of fibre and phytochemicals, compared to omnivorous diets. Whether the corresponding health benefits in vegetarians outweigh the risks of nutrient deficiencies has not been fully clarified. It should be noted that vegetarians often have a higher socioeconomic status, follow a more health-conscious lifestyle with higher physical activity, and refrain from smoking more often than non-vegetarians. The nutritional needs of growing children and adolescents

Mediterranean versus vegetarian diet for cardiovascular disease prevention (the CARDIVEG study): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is able to alter the cardiovascular health of the general population. However, the optimal dietary strategy for cardiovascular disease prevention is still far from being defined. Mediterranean and vegetarian diets are those reporting the greatest grade of evidence in the literature, but no experimental studies comparing these two dietary patterns are available. METHODS/DESIGN: This is an open randomized crossover clinical trial including healthy subjects with a low-to-medium cardiovascular risk profile, characterized by being overweight and by the presence of at least an

Blunted seasonal variation in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D and increased risk of osteomalacia in vegetarian London Asians.

Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were measured in 297 adult Asians and 68 white subjects at different times of year and seasonal variation compared between subjects grouped according to ethnic origin, religion and dietary habit. A sub-group of Asians with symptoms and biochemical changes suggestive of osteomalacia underwent bone biopsy, and static bone histomorphometry was performed. Histological osteomalacia was detected in 15 Asians and borderline changes in 13. The majority of these cases were among vegetarian Hindus. Significant seasonal variation in 25-hydroxy vitamin D was observed in a

Regional place attachment and meat reduction: The role of perceived availability of traditional vegetarian meals and attachment to culinary traditions.

Meat consumption is among the most environmentally impactful human activities. Therefore, reducing meat intake represents a crucial step in addressing climate change. While researchers increasingly recognize that meat consumption is influenced by individual, environmental, and socio-cultural factors, the latter remain underexplored. The present study examined the association between regional place attachment and intentions to reduce meat consumption, focusing on the mediating roles of perceived availability of vegetarian dishes at the regional level and attachment to regional culinary traditio

A vegetarian diet improves hepatic steatosis in MASLD patients through weight loss: a randomized controlled trial in China.

Objective: The therapeutic potential of vegetarian diets in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains understudied in Asian populations. This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effects of a culturally adapted 6-month lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet (LOV-D) on hepatic steatosis and cardiometabolic risk factors through weight loss. Methods: In this randomized trial, 220 Chinese adults with MASLD were assigned to LOV-D (n = 110) or an omnivore diet (n = 110) for 6 months. Both groups received dietitian-supervised meal plans. Primary outcomes included weight

Reduced dietary acid load in U.S. vegetarian adults: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Dietary acid load (DAL) is an important determinant of systemic pH and acid-base homeostasis. Diets abundant in acidogenic foods, such as meat and meat products, induce a low-grade metabolic acidosis state that has been associated with cardiovascular disease, type-2-diabetes, and an increased cancer risk. Fruits and vegetables have alkalizing properties and beneficially affect DAL. It has thus been suggested that a plant-based diet (restricting or excluding animal products) may be a powerful tool in reducing DAL; yet studies in that particular field are scarce. To explore these associations in

Supplement Intake in Recreational Vegan, Vegetarian, and Omnivorous Endurance Runners-Results from the NURMI Study (Step 2).

Nutrient deficiency is a common cause of underperformance in endurance athletes, and supplement intake is frequently considered compensatory for vegan and vegetarian athletes specifically. This study aimed to investigate the patterns of supplement intake among vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous distance (>10 km) runners and its association with age, sex, and race distance. From a total of 317 runners who participated in an online survey, 220 distance runners (mean age: 38.5 years; mean BMI: 21.75 kg/m2) were selected for the final sample after data clearance and assigned to 100 omnivores, 40 ve

Vegetarian and vegan diets and risks of total and site-specific fractures: results from the prospective EPIC-Oxford study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited prospective evidence on possible differences in fracture risks between vegetarians, vegans, and non-vegetarians. We aimed to study this in a prospective cohort with a large proportion of non-meat eaters. METHODS: In EPIC-Oxford, dietary information was collected at baseline (1993-2001) and at follow-up (≈ 2010). Participants were categorised into four diet groups at both time points (with 29,380 meat eaters, 8037 fish eaters, 15,499 vegetarians, and 1982 vegans at baseline in analyses of total fractures). Outcomes were identified through linkage to hospital record
