Population-based cohort study assessing the effectiveness of maternal BNT162b2/mRNA-1273 vaccination against infant coronavirus disease 2019 outcomes during Omicron predominance: The VENUS study.

Maternal Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination during pregnancy enables transplacental antibody transfer; however, data on clinical effectiveness in infants are limited. We evaluated the BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 vaccine effectiveness (VE) of maternal second and third doses against COVID-19 in infants during Omicron predominance. This population-based cohort study in a Japanese municipality included infants born between January and August 2022. Maternal vaccination status at delivery was classified as unvaccinated, second dose before pregnancy, second dose during pregnancy, or third dos

Development and application of a Japanese vaccine database for comparative assessments in the post-authorization phase: The Vaccine Effectiveness, Networking, and Universal Safety (VENUS) study.

BACKGROUND: Japan currently lacks a data platform that can support quantitative assessments of the causal relationships between vaccines and adverse events. This study describes the development and application of the Vaccine Effectiveness, Networking, and Universal Safety (VENUS) Study to facilitate such assessments. METHODS: A database was created by linking public insurance enrollees' claims data with vaccination records acquired from participating municipalities. To provide an overview of the study data, we produced descriptive statistics of sex, age, and vaccinations. We also conducted a

Differentiation of enteric neural crest cells transplanted from SOX10-Venus mouse embryonic stem cells into the gut of the endothelin receptor B null mouse model.

PURPOSE: Failure of enteric neural crest-derived cells (ENCCs) to correctly colonize the embryonic gut results in Hirschsprung's disease (HD). Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) have the potential to differentiate into all tissue-specific cells and lineages, including ENCCs. We investigated the cellular differentiation of ESCs from Sox10-Venus + mice into both control and endothelin receptor-B knockout (Ednrb KO) mouse gut to assess each region. METHODS: We established ESCs from Sox10-Venus + mice. These cells were cultured for 2 days, then selected and co-cultured with either a dissociated control

Outreach mpox vaccination at sex-on-premises venues in Sydney: an audit of a collaborative intervention by public health nurses and LGBTQI+ peer workers.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: In 2024, in response to a re-surge in mpox transmission in New South Wales, Australia, Kirketon Road Centre (KRC) partnered with an HIV and LGBTQI+ community organisation, ACON, to conduct outreach vaccination in two sex-on-premises venues (SOPVs), also known as "saunas". SOPV attendees were approached by an ACON peer worker who offered health education and referral to on-site mpox vaccination (Jynneos®) by a registered nurse. We aim to describe the scope, the acceptability, and the outcomes of mpox vaccination outreach at SOPVs in Sydney, and compare characteristics of

Compliance with smoke-free laws in hospitality venues in Ethiopia: qualitative insights into barriers and facilitators using the tobacco control theoretical framework.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made significant strides in adopting comprehensive smoke-free laws aligned with the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which mandates that all public places, including hospitality venues, public transportation, and workplaces, be 100% smoke-free. However, effective implementation across regions remains uneven. This study examines the barriers and facilitators influencing the enforcement of smoke-free legislation in Ethiopia. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in 10 major cities in Ethiopia, involving 41 key informant interv

Identifying influential neighbors in social networks and venue affiliations among young MSM: a data science approach to predict HIV infection.

OBJECTIVE: Young MSM (YMSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV infection in the United States and their risks of acquiring HIV may be shaped by complex multilayer social networks. These networks are formed through not only direct contact with social/sex partners but also indirect anonymous contacts encountered when attending social venues. We introduced a new application of a state-of-the-art graph-based deep learning method to predict HIV infection that can identify influential neighbors within these multiple network contexts. DESIGN AND METHODS: We used empirical network data among YMSM

Attitudes towards community gambling venues and support for regulatory reform: an online panel study of residents in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Harmful gambling has been identified as an important public health issue that affects individuals, families and the broader community. One gambling product, electronic gambling machines (EGMs), has been associated with significant gambling harm in Australia. There has been limited research that has explored community perceptions of EGMs and attitudes towards reform. This study, conducted in NSW, Australia, aimed to explore community use of EGM venues (clubs and hotels containing EGMs), attitudes towards EGMs and whether the use of these venues influenced attitudes towards EGM refor

Exploring children's experiences in community gambling venues: A qualitative study with children aged 6-16 in regional New South Wales.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Community-based gambling venues provide a range of activities for children alongside adult products, such as gambling. However, there has been little examination of children's experiences with, and exposure to, a range of gambling and non-gambling activities within venues. METHODS: Visual sociology methods were used to measure unprompted recall, prompted recall, current use and intended adult use of activities in community gambling venues in 44 children who attended venues. Qualitative data were also collected to gain further insight into children's perceptions of the venue a

Statistical adjustment of network degree in respondent-driven sampling estimators: venue attendance as a proxy for network size among young MSM.

We introduce a new venue-informed network degree measure, which we applied to respondent-driven sampling (RDS) estimators. Using data collected from 746 young MSM in 2014-2016 in Chicago, IL, and Houston, TX, we estimated the population seroprevalence of HIV and syphilis and risk/protective behaviors, using RDS estimates with self-reported network size as a standard degree measure as well as our proposed venue-informed degree measure. The results indicate that the venue-informed degree measure tended to be more efficient (smaller variance) and less biased than the other measure in both cities

A venue-based analysis of the reach of a targeted outreach service to deliver opportunistic community NHS Health Checks to 'hard-to-reach' groups.

OBJECTIVES: Opportunistic outreach services have been commissioned to overcome potential barriers to uptake, by offering health checks in accessible community venues. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of an outreach health check service to reach key target groups: men, people of South Asian ethnicity and people from deprived areas. The comparator was the health check service provided by GP practices. One aim was to investigate whether the addition of an outreach service would result in a higher percentage of health checks being done for people from the target groups compared to a GP-bas

Venue-Mediated Weak Ties in Multiplex HIV Transmission Risk Networks Among Drug-Using Male Sex Workers and Associates.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the structural characteristics of a multiplex HIV transmission risk network of drug-using male sex workers and their associates. METHODS: Using a sample of 387 drug-using male sex workers and their male and female associates in Houston, Texas, we estimated an exponential random graph model to examine the venue-mediated relationships between individuals, the structural characteristics of relationships not linked to social venues, and homophily. We collected data in 2003 to 2004. The network comprised social, sexual, and drug-using relationships and affiliations with

Co-occurring psychosocial problems and HIV risk among women attending drinking venues in a South African township: a syndemic approach.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, women comprise the majority of HIV infections. Syndemics, or co-occurring epidemics and risk factors, have been applied in understanding HIV risk among marginalized groups. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study are to apply the syndemic framework to examine psychosocial problems that co-occur among women attending drinking venues in South Africa and to test how the co-occurrence of these problems may exacerbate risk for HIV infection. METHOD: Five hundred sixty women from a Cape Town township provided data on multiple psychosocial problems, including food insuffici

A Venue-Based Approach to Asymptomatic Mpox Screening and Doxy-PEP Provision: From Outbreak to Outreach, San Francisco, California, 2023‒2024.

The 2022 global outbreak of clade IIb mpox disproportionately impacted lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities and highlighted issues of stigma, access to health care, and health care‒associated trauma. Together with LGBTQ+ community partners, our research team implemented venue-based mpox virus and antibody testing. In response to feedback from our community partners, this effort evolved to include broader elements of sexual health services, including distribution of prescriptions for doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis.
