The nucleus tractus solitarii across vertebrates: developmental origins, comparative organization, and supranuclear modulation in humans.

The nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) is a highly conserved brainstem structure that has served as a principal hub for visceral sensory integration across vertebrate evolution. While the NTS has long been described as a relay for cardiovascular and respiratory reflexes, recent work increasingly frames it as an integrative node that transforms diverse afferent signals into adaptive, context-sensitive responses. In this review, we synthesize evidence on the developmental origins of the NTS (including contributions from the dorsal alar plate and epibranchial placodes) and its comparative organizati

Xenopus Interferon and Viral Mimics: Insights into Evolution and Adaptation of Immune Response in Vertebrates.

The immune system is a critical system in evolutionary biology, shaped by coevolution between hosts and pathogens. The frog Xenopus is a valuable model organism for studying this process, offering insights into amphibian development, immunity, and the evolutionary dynamics of the interferon (IFN) response and viral interactions. The role of Xenopus IFN and the viral mimics introduced during the development of the immune system is discussed in this review, and the roles they played in the study of host-pathogen interactions and in the replication of genes that allowed the development and comple

Visual opponent mechanisms and spectral responses in non-primate vertebrates: taxonomic distribution, sampling, and classification.

Understanding neural mechanisms of opponency is the next frontier of comparative color vision research. Opponent cell properties can be investigated from different perspectives: the type of cone inputs to a cell (cone opponency), and the wavelengths of light to which the cell responds (spectral opponency). Based on a recent database (DOI 10.1016/j.dib.2024.111166) on cone and spectral opponency across non-primate vertebrates, we identified major taxonomic trends in the distribution of opponent cells through image-forming brain regions, analyzed sampling metrics and experimental variables influ

Environmental and evolutionary factors jointly shape life-history trait diversity of terrestrial vertebrates across China.

Life-history traits represent evolutionary adaptations that mediate responses to external environments. Analyzing variation in these traits provides valuable insights into macroecological processes and supports the development of effective conservation and restoration strategies. However, large-scale biogeographic patterns in life-history trait diversity among terrestrial vertebrates remain insufficiently characterized, and the processes shaping these patterns are not well understood. This study integrated life-history and spatial distribution data for 2 334 terrestrial vertebrate species in C

The circadian clock orchestrates spermatogonial differentiation and fertilization by regulating retinoic acid signaling in vertebrates.

The circadian clock generates and maintains ∼24-hour oscillations in almost all organs. The testis, however, remains mysterious, without a clear understanding of its circadian functions. Our time-series transcriptome analysis reveals more than 1000 rhythmically expressed genes in the zebrafish and mouse testes, respectively. Canonical circadian clock genes are rhythmically expressed in Sertoli cells and regulate retinoic acid (RA) production, which is also evidenced by their co-expression with RA synthesis genes in single Sertoli cells. Genetic and pharmacological manipulations and temporal de

Thyroid and endostyle development in cyclostomes provides new insights into the evolutionary history of vertebrates.

BACKGROUND: The endostyle is an epithelial exocrine gland found in non-vertebrate chordates (amphioxi and tunicates) and the larvae of modern lampreys. It is generally considered to be an evolutionary precursor of the thyroid gland of vertebrates. Transformation of the endostyle into the thyroid gland during the metamorphosis of lampreys is thus deemed to be a recapitulation of a past event in vertebrate evolution. In 1906, Stockard reported that the thyroid gland in hagfish, the sister cyclostome group of lampreys, develops through an endostyle-like primordium, strongly supporting the plesiom

Divergent evolution of progesterone and mineralocorticoid receptors in terrestrial vertebrates and fish influences endocrine disruption.

There is much concern about disruption of endocrine physiology regulated by steroid hormones in humans, other terrestrial vertebrates and fish by industrial chemicals, such as bisphenol A, and pesticides, such as DDT. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals influence steroid-mediated physiology in humans and other vertebrates by competing with steroids for receptor binding sites, disrupting diverse responses involved in reproduction, development and differentiation. Here I discuss that due to evolution of the progesterone receptor (PR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) after ray-finned fish and

Small vertebrates running on uneven terrain: a biomechanical study of two differently specialised lacertid lizards.

While running, small animals frequently encounter large terrain variations relative to their body size, therefore, terrain variations impose important functional demands on small animals. Nonetheless, we have previously observed in lizards that running specialists can maintain a surprisingly good running performance on very uneven terrains. The relatively large terrain variations are offset by their capacity for leg adjustability that ensures a 'smooth ride' of the centre of mass (CoM). The question as to how the effect of an uneven terrain on running performance and locomotor costs differs be

A comparative review on estrogen receptors in the reproductive male tract of non mammalian vertebrates.

Estrogen receptors alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ) are transcription factors known to be involved in the regulation of many complex physiological processes in mammals. They are expressed primarily in the reproductive tract of all vertebrates females, thus indicating important and conserved functions in female reproductive success. ERs are also present in physiological different tissues as bone, brain, liver, skin and adipose tissues, in both females and males. In the latter, ERs have been found also in the genital tract, supporting the findings of a complex role for estrogen in spermatogenesis and,

[Artificial Inversion of the Left-Right Visceral Asymmetry in Vertebrates: Conceptual Approaches and Experimental Solutions].

Externally, vertebrates are bilaterally symmetrical; however, left-right asymmetry is observed in the structure of their internal organs and systems of organs (circulatory, digestive, and respiratory). In addition to the asymmetry of internal organs (visceral), there is also functional (i.e., asymmetrical functioning of organs on the left and right sides of the body) and behavioral asymmetry. The question of a possible association between different types of asymmetry is still open. The study of the mechanisms of such association, in addition to the fundamental interest, has important applicati

Diversity of limb-bone safety factors for locomotion in terrestrial vertebrates: evolution and mixed chains.

During locomotion over land, vertebrates' limb bones are exposed to loads. Like most biological structures, limb bones have a capacity to withstand greater loads than they usually experience, termed a safety factor (SF). How diverse are limb-bone SFs, and what factors correlate with such variation? We have examined these questions from two perspectives. First, we evaluated locomotor SF for the femur in diverse lineages, including salamanders, frogs, turtles, lizards, crocodilians, and marsupials (opossums). Comparisons with values for hind-limb elements in running birds and eutherian mammals i

Differentiation and growth of bone ornamentation in vertebrates: a comparative histological study among the Crocodylomorpha.

Bone ornamentation, that is, hollow (pits and grooves) or protruding (ridges) repetitive reliefs on the surface of dermal bones, is a frequent, though poorly studied and understood, feature in vertebrates. One of the most typical examples of this characteristic is given by the Crurotarsi, a taxon formed by the crocodilians and their closest allies, which generally display deep ornamentation on skull roof and osteoderms. However, the ontogenetic process responsible for the differentiation and development of this character remains controversial. This study was conducted to settle the question on

Structural and functional comparison of the proboscis between tapirs and other extant and extinct vertebrates.

Tapirs (Perissodactyla: Tapiridae) are the only living vertebrates, beyond the order Proboscidea, found to possess a true proboscis, defined as a flexible tubular extension of the joint narial and upper labial musculature that serves, at least in part, to grasp food. Tapirs show only partial homology and analogy with elephants in the narial and upper labial structures, as well as in the skull bones and teeth. However, superficially similar extensions in other extant vertebrates differ greatly in anatomy and function. Therefore, they deserve new names: prorhiscis (e.g. Mammalia: Saiga tatarica)

Muscles or testes? Comparative evidence for sexual competition among dioecious blood parasites (Schistosomatidae) of vertebrates.

Schistosomes, which live as parasitic adults in the blood vessels of mammals, birds and crocodiles, are unique among trematodes because they have separate sexes. Several studies have shown that the sex ratio is often biased towards males. Sexual dimorphism can be very important in several genera (Schistosoma, Heterobilharzia, Schistosomatium), as larger males grip smaller females in a gynecophoric canal. But not all schistomatid species have developed a gynecophoric canal. It is also striking that the number of testes varies widely, from a small number of testes reported (2-7) to a very high n

Structures and molecules involved in generation and regulation of biological rhythms in vertebrates and invertebrates.

Melatonin from the retina and the pineal gland functions in neuroendocrine hierarchies. Photoreceptors--eyes and extraretinal--detect light. Oscillators--pineal and suprachiasmatic nuclei--act as pacemakers. Driven neuroendocrine rhythms carry temporal hormone signals throughout the body. Light controls melatonin: light sets the phase of the melatonin rhythm and determines the duration of melatonin synthesis. By these means, circadian rhythms (e.g., in locomotor activity and body temperature) and seasonal rhythms (e.g., in reproduction) are controlled.

The contribution of extrapineal sites of melatonin synthesis to circulating melatonin levels in higher vertebrates.

While the production of melatonin in higher vertebrates occurs in other organs and tissues besides the pineal, the contribution of extrapineal sites of melatonin synthesis such as the retina, the Harderian glands and the gut to circulating melatonin levels is still a matter of debate. The amount of melatonin found in the gastrointestinal tract is much higher than in any other organ including the pineal and the gut appears to make a significant contribution to circulating melatonin at least under certain conditions. The gut has been identified to be the major source of the elevated plasma conce

[The mechanism of the intranasal action of dermorphin in representatives of 2 classes of vertebrates].

It has been shown that endogenous opioid dermorphin induces effective analgesia after intranasal injection to fish (0.02-0.20 mg/kg) and rats (0.005 mg/kg). Maintenance of dermorphin analgesia after olfactory and trigeminal denervation indicates that the analgetic effect is not realized via the olfactory receptors or free terminals of the trigeminal nerve.

Somitic-vertebral correlation and vertebral levels in the human embryo.

Somitic and vertebral interrelationships and levels were studied in 84 human embryos of stages 9-23 (3-8 postovulatory weeks). The first four somites are occipital, the occipitocervical junction is at somites 4/5, and eight somites are involved in the cervical region: X, Y, Z, and C. 3-7. By stage 17 the total number of occipitovertebral "units," namely 38 or 39, is attained. Resegmentation (Neugliederung) of sclerotomes is not supported. A new scheme of somitic/vertebral correlation is proposed in which somites and centra are in register. Differential growth of the regions of the vertebral co

[Proximal ligation of the vertebral artery for treatment of vertebral aneurysms].

Vertebral aneurysms are not necessarily rare. In general neck clipping of vertebral aneurysms is the surest method for treatment of aneurysms, but as for vertebral aneurysms, it is often difficult to clip the neck without danger, because they cross over lower cranial nerves and are often fusiform. The indication of proximal ligation of the vertebral artery for treatment of vertebral aneurysms has not yet established. This procedure in 28 cases in the literature and our 3 cases treated successfully was discussed and following results were obtained. 1) Proximal ligation of the vertebral artery w
