[Two cases of scleroderma associated with vibration syndrome].

Case 1, a 49-year-old male who had been engaged in repair and reclamation of automobile tires, developed symptoms of vibration syndrome (Raynaud's phenomenon, numbness of both hands, tinnitus and impaired hearing) after some 30 years' use of a grinder and impact wrench. Two years thereafter, multiple sclerodermic lesions appeared over the trunk, upper extremities, and thighs; these disappeared about 2 years later. Histologically, hyperplasia and nodular swelling of collagen bundles were present in the dermis. An immunological study showed the serum to be positive for anti-centromere antibody,

Forestry workers exposed to vibration: a neurological study.

Neurological findings were examined in 186 forestry workers with a mean exposure to chain saw vibration of 16.6 hours. The prevalence of active vibration induced white fingers was 5%, parethaesias of the hands 53%, and muscle weakness 13%. Clinical polyneuropathy was observed in 16 forestry workers in the hands (7.5%) which did not correlate with alcohol consumption. Seventy nine forestry workers of the total population were selected for electromyographic examination. Generalised EMG based polyneuropathy in the hands was observed in only two of the 79 forestry workers (2.5%). The carpal tunnel

Vibration-induced white finger disease: a case report.

A syndrome of pain, stiffness and numbness associated with vascular changes that develops in the hands of those who use vibrating tools has been termed vibration-induced white finger disease. The authors describe such a case that occurred in a 22-year-old man. A change of job and a course of physiotherapy alleviated the symptoms and improved circulation. A review of the literature and the authors' findings suggest that this condition is a result of marked changes in the vascular supply to the hand from repetitive blunt trauma. Arteriographic evidence of deficient palmar arch vasculature is pre

Machine Learning-Assisted Ultraelastic and Vibration-Resolvable Microwebs.

Bioinspired structural designs have introduced a new paradigm in material science and mechanical engineering. Among them, the emerging spiderweb-inspired structures have shown potential for creating artificial microstructures with enhanced tunability and functionality. However, the restricted structural elasticity of current spiderweb-like designs causes limited mechanical performances, especially at the micro/nanoscale. Here, we employ machine learning and kirigami micro/nanofabrication to develop an ultraelastic microweb. Data-driven optimizations enable efficient transformation of the natur

Vibration disturbance compensation in in situ confocal microscopy.

In situ microscopic measurement, conducted within the natural environment of a material or device, offers precise observations directly at the sample location, mitigating potential damage or deformation during transport. However, the inherent vibration of microscopic measurement equipment can introduce blurring and distortion to images, compromising measurement accuracy. This study proposes employing an acceleration sensor to detect microprobe vibrations and subsequently calculates three-dimensional coordinate displacements to compensate for measurement discrepancies. This approach can diminis

Novel roles of vibration transmittance in fracture testing.

This letter re-assesses a publication in the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery entitled 'Vibration transmittance measures sternotomy stability - a preliminary study in human cadavers.' The roles of ultrasound in testing for sternotomy stability and that of stress vibration transmittance in cases of fracture of the posterior table of the sternum or in hairline undisplaced fractures are examined in view of their differing sound wave frequency ranges.

Vascular hand-arm vibration syndrome--magnetic resonance angiography.

The diagnosis of vascular hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) requires consistent symptoms, photographic evidence of digital blanching and sufficient exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV; A(8) > 2.5 m/s2). There is no reliable quantitative investigation for distinguishing HAVS from other causes of Raynaud's phenomenon and from normal individuals. Hypothenar and thenar hammer syndromes produce similar symptoms to HAVS but are difficult to diagnose clinically and may be confused with HAVS. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a safe and minimally invasive method of visualizing blood ves

Robust adaptive vibration control of a flexible structure.

Different types of L1 adaptive control systems show that using robust theories with adaptive control approaches has produced high performance controllers. In this study, a model reference adaptive control scheme considering robust theories is used to propose a practical control system for vibration suppression of a flexible launch vehicle (FLV). In this method, control input of the system is shaped from the dynamic model of the vehicle and components of the control input are adaptively constructed by estimating the undesirable vibration frequencies. Robust stability of the adaptive vibration c

Whole-body vibration exposure in metropolitan bus drivers.

BACKGROUND: Back injuries are common in transit drivers, and can result in substantial direct and indirect cost to the employer and employee. Whole-body vibration (WBV) is one risk factor for drivers. Standards have been adopted (ISO 2631-1) to guide researchers in measuring and analysing WBV levels. Lately, a new standard has been added (ISO 2631-5) that takes impulsive exposures into account. AIMS: The aims of this study were to determine the levels of vibration for bus drivers using both ISO 2631-1 and 2631-5 standards, and whether there are differences in vibration levels and seat transmi

Impaired vibration of auditory ossicles in osteopetrotic mice.

In the middle ear, a chain of three tiny bones (ie, malleus, incus, and stapes) vibrates to transmit sound from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Little is known about whether and how bone-resorbing osteoclasts play a role in the vibration of auditory ossicles. We analyzed hearing function and morphological features of auditory ossicles in osteopetrotic mice, which lack osteoclasts because of the deficiency of either cytokine RANKL or transcription factor c-Fos. The auditory brainstem response showed that mice of both genotypes experienced hearing loss, and laser Doppler vibrometry revea

Neck muscle vibration in full cues affects pointing.

Vibration of the dorsolateral neck stimulates proprioceptors that are normally active during head movement; this induces a visual illusion of contralateral motion and displacement of a stationary target seen against a homogenous background. The spatial constancy explanation of the illusion argues that it occurs because information about head movement is necessary for accurate egocentric localization of visual objects. Accurate egocentric localization, in turn, is necessary for the success of object-directed motor action, but previous studies failed to find evidence that vibration affects point

Implication of vibration induced nystagmus in Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: The incidence of ipsilesional beating vibration induced nystagmus (VIN) is significantly higher in Meniere's disease (MD) with lower canal paresis (CP) group on caloric test and the intensity of VIN shows significant positive correlation with CP. Considering previous reports showing predominant loss of type II hair cells in MD and discrepancy of the results between caloric test and head thrust test in MD patients, VIN may provide valuable information regarding the functional reservoir of vestibular type II hair cells in MD. OBJECTIVES: Clinical presentation of MD is dynamic and ny

[Serum phospholipids in anthracosilicosis associated with vibration disease].

The authors studied serum phospholipid subunits in patients with anthracosilicosis associated with vibration disease. Findings are significantly higher detergent fraction of phospholipids--lysophosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, sphingomyelin, lower phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphoinositides--that suggests increased transmissivity of biologic membranes and activated inosite mechanism of transmembrane signal transmission. Aeroionization appeared to have positive influence, normalizing serum phospholipids level.

Current pathophysiological views on vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomenon.

This review attempts to summarize and discuss contemporary pathogenetic views on vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomenon assuming its multifactorial etiology. An increase in central and peripheral sympathetic nervous activity is discussed based on different physiological indicators of autonomic dysfunction and sympathetic hyperactivity. Local acral vasodysregulation is considered. Receptor and nerve endings dysfunction presented with predominance of alpha(2)-receptor function in the digital arteries and neuronal loss in those digital cutaneous perivascular nerves containing calcitonin gene-rela

Corticospinal excitability changes following prolonged muscle tendon vibration.

The present experiment addressed the time course of corticospinal excitability changes following interventional muscle tendon vibration. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, motor evoked potentials of the flexor carpi radialis and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle were recorded for a period of 60 min after cessation of vibration (80 Hz, 0.5 mm, 30 min) to the distal wrist flexor tendons. A delayed corticospinal excitability increase in both the vibrated and non-vibrated antagonistic muscle was observed, with lasting levels of facilitation for the latter. No changes were observed follow

A finite-element model of vocal-fold vibration.

A finite-element model of the vocal fold is developed from basic laws of continuum mechanics to obtain the oscillatory characteristics of the vocal folds. The model is capable of accommodating inhomogeneous, anisotropic material properties and irregular geometry of the boundaries. It has provisions for asymmetry across the midplane, both from the geometric and tension point of view, which enables one to simulate certain kinds of voice disorders due to vocal-fold paralysis. It employs the measured viscoelastic properties of the vocal-fold tissues. The detailed construction of the matrix differe

The Hettinger hand vibration test, vasospasm, and glaucoma.

Ocular vasospasm in response to local and/or systemic stimuli may contribute to ischemia of the optic nerve. The Hettinger hand vibration test was applied to patients with and without glaucoma to identify subgroups with a high systemic vasospastic tendency. A total of 580 subjects were tested (113 controls, 86 glaucoma suspects, 270 with primary open-angle glaucoma, 71 with secondary open-angle glaucoma, 30 with normal-tension glaucoma, and 10 with angle-closure glaucoma). The frequency distribution curve of Hettinger scores (HS) was bimodal, suggesting two distinct groups. Within each diagnos

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: a guide for nurses.

It is estimated that 1.2 million workers are now exposed to hazardous levels of vibration in their work. In the year 1995-1996, over 3,000 new cases of hand-arm vibration syndrome were assessed by the Department of Social Security (DSS) under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Scheme. Formerly called vibration white finger, it is the most common of all diseases assessed by the DSS, with the majority of workers affected having up to 14 per cent disability. This article explains the syndrome and its management.
