Tsetse fly (G. f. fuscipes) distribution in the Lake Victoria basin of Uganda.

Tsetse flies transmit trypanosomes, the causative agent of human and animal African trypanosomiasis. The tsetse vector is extensively distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosomiasis maintenance is determined by the interrelationship of three elements: vertebrate host, parasite and the vector responsible for transmission. Mapping the distribution and abundance of tsetse flies assists in predicting trypanosomiasis distributions and developing rational strategies for disease and vector control. Given scarce resources to carry out regular full scale field tsetse surveys to up-date existing

Pediatric anaphylactic adverse events following immunization in Victoria, Australia from 2007 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is a rare life-threatening adverse event following immunization (AEFI). Variability in presentation can make differentiation between anaphylaxis and other AEFI difficult. This study summarizes pediatric anaphylaxis AEFI reported to an Australian state-based passive surveillance system. METHODS: All suspected and reported pediatric (<18 years) anaphylaxis AEFI notified to SAEFVIC (Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination In the Community) Melbourne, Australia, between May 2007 to May 2013 were analyzed. Clinical descriptions of the AEFI, using the internatio

A positive association between cryptosporidiosis notifications and ambient temperature, Victoria, Australia, 2001-2009.

Increased temperatures provide optimal conditions for pathogen survival, virulence and replication as well as increased opportunities for human-pathogen interaction. This paper examined the relationship between notifications of cryptosporidiosis and temperature in metropolitan and rural areas of Victoria, Australia between 2001 and 2009. A negative binomial regression model was used to analyse monthly average maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall and the monthly count of cryptosporidiosis notifications. In the metropolitan area, a 1 °C increase in monthly average minimum temperature of th

Intestinal schistosomiasis among preschool children along the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda.

Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by Schistosoma trematode parasites, affects hundreds of millions of people and accounts for more than 40% of the global health burden due to neglected tropical diseases. In Uganda, intestinal schistosomiasis is endemic in 73 out of 112 districts and about 55% of the population of 36 million individuals are at risk. There is scanty information on the status and burden of schistosomiasis in preschool children less than six years of age in Uganda. This study aimed to assess the status of Schistosoma mansoni infections in children aged 1-5 years in Uganda. S. mans

Risk behaviours and blood borne virus exposure for transient workers in rural Victoria.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk behaviours associated with the transmission of blood borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among transient rural workers in Victoria. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using a convenience sampling frame. SETTING: Between June and August 2006, 89 participants were recruited from sites located in three rural centres in Victoria's Loddon and Mallee regions. Data were collected using a short questionnaire that asked about history of transient work, sexual history, condom use, alcohol and illicit drug use, and BBV history and testing. Finger-pr

Institutional responses to communicable diseases at Victoria College, University of Toronto, 1900-1940.

Between 1900 and 1940 students and staff risked their lives to attend, and teach at, Victoria College. Not only did Victoria experience three major epidemics--diphtheria in 1911, influenza from 1918 to 1920, and smallpox in 1927--but almost yearly one or two students contracted diseases such as scarlet fever, measles, and mumps. Yet at a time when there was no health insurance and few hospital facilities, how did the university cope with the problem? This paper examines the care provided to Victoria's residential students. In the process the paper illustrates not only the upheaval endured by i

Epidemiology of primary biliary cirrhosis in Victoria, Australia: high prevalence in migrant populations.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The prevalence of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) reported in different countries varies widely, indicating that genetic or environmental factors may be important in the etiology of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine this issue further by determining the overall prevalence of PBC in one state in Australia and to examine the prevalence among different migrant groups within this population. METHODS: Thorough case-finding methods were used to identify all cases of PBC in Victoria, Australia. Age-adjusted prevalence rates among different migrant groups were exami

Neural tube defects in Victoria, Australia: potential contributing factors and public health implications.

OBJECTIVES: To measure population prevalence and determine potential predictors of neural tube defects. METHOD: Analysis of all births reported to a mandated collection of perinatal data, and terminations prior to 20 weeks' gestation that have been reported to a data collection of birth defects in Victoria from 1983 to 1997. Prevalence at birth and risk ratios of infant and maternal characteristics associated with neural tube defects were calculated. RESULTS: Prevalence of spina bifida has remained steady for 15 years and was 8.8/10,000 in 1997. Anencephaly increased to 7.9/10,000 in 1997. A

Hepatitis B immunisation coverage of infants born to chronic carrier mothers in Victoria.

Infants born to HBsAg- (hepatitis B surface antigen) carrier mothers are highly likely to become chronic hepatitis B (HB) carriers themselves unless their status is recognised at birth and they are immunised with three doses of HB vaccine, the first within 48 hours of birth, concurrent with hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG). This study was designed to determine how many infants born in Victoria to carrier mothers completed three doses of HB vaccine. We sent the names of all infants of HBsAg-carrier mothers notified in Victoria between 1.7.91 and 30.6.92 to the appropriate local government imm

Complementary Medicine Use and Perceptions of It in Victoria, Australia: A Statewide Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Complementary medicines (CMs) are widely used in Australia, yet consumer beliefs about their safety and effectiveness often diverge from the scientific evidence. Contemporary statewide data from Victoria, particularly about these perceptions and underlying perception profiles, are limited. We therefore aimed to characterise CM use patterns and perceptions of it among Victorian adults and identify the demographic and use-related belief patterns. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in metropolitan and regional Victoria (November 2024-August 2025) among adults

Generation Victoria (GenV): protocol for a longitudinal birth cohort of Victorian children and their parents.

BACKGROUND: In a world confronted with new and connected challenges, novel strategies are needed to help children and adults achieve their full potential, to predict, prevent and treat disease, and to achieve equity in services and outcomes. Australia's Generation Victoria (GenV) cohorts are designed for multi-pronged discovery (what could improve outcomes?) and intervention research (what actually works, how much and for whom?). Here, we describe the key features of its protocol. METHODS: GenV is a whole-population longitudinal platform open to all ≈150,000 children born within a two-year wi

Institutional Responses to Voluntary Assisted Dying: An Empirical Study in Victoria and Western Australia.

Patients seeking to access voluntary assisted dying (VAD) are necessarily at the end of their lives. Hence, they are likely to be concurrently receiving care from institutions (community nursing services, health services, palliative care services, and aged care facilities) with different levels of participation in VAD. This article reports on the various institutional approaches to VAD based on eighteen semi-structured interviews with regulators from Victoria and Western Australia, representing fifteen institutions with varying levels of support for VAD. We generated five main themes from refl

A case of hot tub lung secondary to mycobacterium avium complex in Victoria, Australia.

Hot tub lung (HTL) is a type of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) caused by inhalation of aerosols containing non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). We report the first case of hot tub lung in Victoria, Australia. A 31-year-old female presented with 3 weeks of dyspnoea, fevers and malaise, despite a course of antibiotics. She had used an indoor spa frequently for the past several months. She was hypoxic saturating 86% on room air. Examination revealed fine bilateral basal crepitations without wheeze. Inflammatory markers were elevated. A high resolution CT (HRCT) chest demonstrated extensive bila

Living with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in Victoria, Australia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Victoria, Australia, children with Pacific Islander ('Pacific') ethnicities are overrepresented in acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). In June 2023, ARF and RHD became notifiable in Victoria. To inform public health and clinical practice, we described young Pacific patients' and their caregivers' understandings and experiences of ARF/RHD, and identified possible ways to improve the delivery of clinical care. METHODS: We established a project reference group including local Pacific people to guide this research. Pacific patients who attended an ARF/RHD

Bulinus snails in the Lake Victoria Basin in Kenya: Systematics and their role as hosts for schistosomes.

The planorbid gastropod genus Bulinus consists of 38 species that vary in their ability to vector Schistosoma haematobium (the causative agent of human urogenital schistosomiasis), other Schistosoma species, and non-schistosome trematodes. Relying on sequence-based identifications of bulinids (partial cox1 and 16S) and Schistosoma (cox1 and ITS), we examined Bulinus species in the Lake Victoria Basin in Kenya for naturally acquired infections with Schistosoma species. We collected 6,133 bulinids from 11 sites between 2014-2021, 226 (3.7%) of which harbored Schistosoma infections. We found 4 Bu

Predicting the periodic risk of anthrax in livestock in Victoria, Australia, using meteorological data.

Cases of anthrax in livestock are infrequently and irregularly reported in the state of Victoria, Australia; however, their impact on individual livestock, farming communities and the government agencies tasked with containing these outbreaks is high. This infrequency has been anecdotally associated with differences in annual and local weather patterns. In this study, we used historical anthrax cases and meteorological data from weather stations throughout Victoria to train a generalized linear mixed effects model to predict the daily odds of a case of anthrax occurring in each shire in the co
