Dealing with the effects of domestic violence.

Domestic violence has a lasting and damaging effect on the lives of thousands of women, men and children in Ireland and the UK. Yet, healthcare services are il equipped to deal with the victims of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, many of whom present to emergency departments because they need help and support. As this article discusses, healthcare staff have a responsibility of care for such people. They must be able to recognise and respond to the signs of domestic abuse, and refer people who experience it to the appropriate organisations.

Adolescent violence screening in the ED.

Youth violence is widely recognized as a major public health problem. Adolescent suicidality (ideation, behavior, or both) is disturbingly common in the United States, and homicide remains one of the leading causes of death for young people aged 10 to 24 years. Assessing youth suicidality and homicidality in the emergency department (ED) is a complex and challenging task. Evidence about the value of available ED risk assessments is not encouraging. Attempts to develop models that predict violence have in part been unsuccessful from the fact that ideation is common and the value of depression i

The Influence of Media Violence on Youth.

Research on violent television and films, video games, and music reveals unequivocal evidence that media violence increases the likelihood of aggressive and violent behavior in both immediate and long-term contexts. The effects appear larger for milder than for more severe forms of aggression, but the effects on severe forms of violence are also substantial (r = .13 to .32) when compared with effects of other violence risk factors or medical effects deemed important by the medical community (e.g., effect of aspirin on heart attacks). The research base is large; diverse in methods, samples, and

Victims of violence: an Asian scenario.

The term 'violence' is difficult to define. Aggressive behaviour with actual use of physical force may result in some form of physical and emotional trauma to an individual and this could be considered as violence against the person. The trauma may range from minimal physical injury to death. It is also relevant to note that in some jurisdictions if members of the law enforcement agencies with appropriate authority resort to certain acts of 'violence' for lawful purposes, then such acts of violence may be excluded from this category. However, if the law enforcement personnel exceed their limit

Burma: the political economy of violence.

Protracted conflict and violence in Burma have been conducive to the growth of the opium industry, Burma's single financial success in recent years of economic crisis and authoritarian rule. This in turn has fed violence and subsequent humanitarian crisis. This paper argues that the underlying political economy of the conflict has been overlooked, while conflict itself has been treated as a peripheral factor in questions of 'development', and further that the opium dynamic is a vital factor in continued violence and vulnerability for non-combatants in the region. A political economy approach,

Victims of violence and the general practitioner.

BACKGROUND: Violent crime is on the increase in Britain, with 17% of the 15 million incidents of crime reported in 1991 being of a violent nature. Although there is some information on the role of accident and emergency departments for victims who sustain physical injury, little is known about the role of the general practitioner (GP) in managing the acute and longer-term sequelae of violence. AIM: To examine the links between experiencing physical of sexual assault and seeking help from GPs in London. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of all adult attendees in one large group practice was ca

Patterns of violence in homeless women.

Fifty percent of all women in America have reported being battered at some point in time, and one in five report regular assaults. This exploratory qualitative study's purpose was to describe reported patterns of violence in sheltered battered women. Homelessness was the adaptive response to battering. A purposive sample of 7 women described violence patterns from childhood and their most recent relationships prior to seeking shelter. In-depth audiotaped interviews indicated extreme violence and terror. Thematic analysis revealed an understanding of abusive patterns with a male partner. A theo

Domestic violence and the general practitioner.

Domestic violence is a common social problem that raises many difficult questions and management issues for both the patient and the doctor. Domestic violence is an abuse of power within the relationship. Physical assault is common and serious, but psychological abuse is more damaging. Perpetrators of domestic violence do not usually perceive that they have a problem and no change in their behaviour is possible unless they want to change. For general practitioners the first step in dealing with domestic violence is detection, and that means acknowledging that it can exist in any patient. Gener

The cutaneous manifestations of violence and poverty.

BACKGROUND: Violence is a public health issue that disproportionately affects the poor. Homelessness, drug abuse, and physical violence are seen with increasing frequency in poor communities. This article reviews the cutaneous manifestations of violence and the dermatologic problems commonly seen in the homeless. Particular emphasis is placed on the experience of municipal hospitals serving the urban poor. OBSERVATIONS: Dermatologic diseases are common in the homeless, and foot-related problems such as cellulitis and pyodermas are frequent causes of hospitalization. Unusual patterns of scarri

Affective disorders and violence in adolescents.

Many adolescent affective disorders are rooted in biological vulnerability to stress and a predisposition to mood variations that are latent in childhood. As these stress-sensitive children encounter the normative helplessness and struggle for autonomy of adolescence, they may use violence, explosive rage, self-starvation, grandiose self-idealization, drug abuse, and suicidal behavior to relieve psychological helplessness and tension. They may begin a lifelong cycle of failure, disruption, and rejection by family and schools. The author describes adolescent depression and its biological underp

The pugilist and the price of controlled violence.

The Hellenistic bronze known as The Boxer at Rest presents one of the most striking representations of trauma in ancient art. Unlike the idealized athletic bodies of Classical Greece, the sculpture depicts a fighter marked by swelling, facial asymmetry, auricular deformity, scars, and signs of repeated injury. Viewed through a contemporary medical lens, these features correspond closely to the cumulative consequences of chronic exposure to blunt-force trauma. This article examines the sculpture at the intersection of medicine, neuroscience, and anthropology. The visible injuries represented by

[Violence and Abuse in Competitive Sports].

Violence and Abuse in Competitive Sports Abstract. Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physic

Psychopharmacology of Persistent Violence and Aggression.

Persistent violence not due to acute psychosis or mania can be managed only after appropriate characterization of the aggressive episodes (psychotic, impulsive, or predatory/planned/instrumental). The type of violence combined with the psychiatric diagnosis dictates the evidence-based pharmacologic approaches for psychotically motivated and impulsive aggression, whereas instrumental violence mandates forensic/behavioral strategies. For nonacute inpatients, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, traumatic brain injury, and dementia comprise the majority of individuals who are persistently aggressive

Reciprocity in Adolescent and Caregiver Violence.

Over a 2-year period, with assessments every six months, the reciprocity in violent behaviors (verbal and physical) was investigated in a sample of 161 adolescents, who met the criteria for substance or alcohol abuse or dependence, and their caregivers, who participated in a clinical trial for family treatment for adolescent substance abuse. Using observed variables in a structural equation model with panel data, there was very little stability in violent behaviors across time from the perspectives of both the adolescents and caregivers. Evidence for violence reciprocity between adolescent and

Adolescents as victims and perpetrators of violence.

The hallmark of adolescent development is risk-taking behavior, mostly benign in nature, with no sequelae in adulthood. For that small number of adolescents for whom risk-taking behaviors are dangerous, for themselves and others, there are common childhood factors that may lead to those behaviors. In studies of adolescent victims, as well as perpetrators, a common theme can be identified, ie, maltreatment. The adolescent who visits Internet chat rooms, meets unknown individuals, and is later sexually assaulted by that individual is often a victim of sexual abuse in earlier childhood. Studies d
