Virtual reality for teaching and learning in crime scene investigation.

Simulated crime scene investigation is an essential component of forensic science education, but its implementation is costly and poses challenges to accessibility; offering personal investigations in higher education scenarios is often impossible. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology which offers exciting prospects for teaching and learning, especially for imparting practical skills. We document here a multidisciplinary experimental study in which a bespoke VR crime scene app was designed and implemented, after which it was tested by both undergraduate student and staff/postgraduate

Exergaming With Beat Saber: An Investigation of Virtual Reality Aftereffects.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming has the potential to target sedentary behavior. Immersive environments can distract users from the physical exertion of exercise and can motivate them to continue exergaming. Despite the recent surge in VR popularity, numerous users still experience VR sickness from using head-mounted displays (HMDs). Apart from the commonly assessed self-reported symptoms, depth perception and cognition may also be affected. Considering the potential benefits of VR exergaming, it is crucial to identify the adverse effects limiting its potential and continued uptake.

[Virtual reality therapy in the care management of anxiety disorders].

Virtual reality involves the creation of an interactive three-dimensional virtual world which the user can navigate. This technology is proposed for anxiety disorders as an alternative to the in vivo and imaginative exposure provided in cognitive behavioral therapy, the gold standard psychoterapeutic treatment for this pathology. According to a signifcant number of publications including meta-analysis, virtual reality therapy exposure is at least equivalent to in vivo exposure in specifc phobias, panic disorder with agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia. A fundamental f

The Clinical Utility of Virtual Reality in Neurorehabilitation: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) experiences (through games and virtual environments) are increasingly being used in physical, cognitive, and psychological interventions. However, the impact of VR as an approach to rehabilitation is not fully understood, and its advantages over traditional rehabilitation techniques are yet to be established. METHOD: We present a systematic review which was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). During February and March of 2018, we conducted searches on PubMed (Medline), Virtual Health Library Searc

A Psychometric Tool for a Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Approach for Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a chronic problem that affects the life of subjects and often influences their life choices. The standard rehabilitation methods all use a classic paper and pencil training format but these exercises are boring and demanding for children who may have difficulty in completing the treatments. It is important to develop a new rehabilitation program that would help children in a funny and engaging way. A Wii-based game was developed to demonstrate that a short treatment with an action video game, rather than phonological or orthographic training, may improve the reading abilities in dy

A Cognitive and Virtual Reality Treatment Program for the Fear of Flying.

BACKGROUND: Passenger air transport has considerably increased in the past 50 yr. It is estimated that between 7 and 40% of the population of industrialized countries is currently afraid of flying. Programs treating the fear of flying have been developed to meet this problem. This study measures the effectiveness of one of these programs by focusing on flight-related anxiety before the program and after the first flight following the intervention. METHODS: There were 157 individuals recruited to participate in a 1-d intervention aiming at treating the fear of flying, and using both cognitive

The combined use of virtual reality exposure in the treatment of agoraphobia.

INTRODUCTION: This study compares the differential efficacy of three groups of treatments for agoraphobia: paroxetine combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy, paroxetine combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy and virtual reality exposure, and a group with only paroxetine. METHODOLOGY: 99 patients with agoraphobia were finally selected. Both combined treatment groups received 11 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and one of the groups was also exposed to 4 sessions of virtual reality treatment. Treatments were applied in individual sessions once a week for 3 months. RESULTS: The

Effect of viewing mode on pathfinding in immersive Virtual Reality.

The use of Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) to view Virtual Reality Environments (VREs) has received much attention recently. This paper reports on the difference between actual humans' navigation in a VRE viewed through an HMD compared to that in the same VRE viewed on a laptop PC display. A novel Virtual Reality (VR) Navigation input device (VRNChair), designed by our team, was paired with an Oculus Rift DK2 Head-Mounted Display (HMD). People used the VRNChair to navigate a VRE, and we analyzed their navigational trajectories with and without the HMD to investigate plausible differences in perfo

[Use of virtual reality in forensic psychiatry. A new paradigm?].

BACKGROUND: For more than 20 years virtual realities (VR) have been successfully used in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders. The most important advantages of VR are the high ecological validity of virtual environments, the entire controllability of virtual stimuli in the virtual environment and the capability to induce the sensation of being in the virtual environment instead of the physical environment. VRs provide the opportunity to face the user with stimuli and situations which are not available or too risky in reality. Despite these advantages VR-based applications have

Simulation and virtual reality in medical education and therapy: a protocol.

Continuing medical education has historically been provided primarily by didactic lectures, though adult learners prefer experiential or self-directed learning. Young physicians have extensive experience with computer-based or "video" games, priming them for medical education--and treating their patients--via new technologies. We report our use of standardized patients (SPs) to educate physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of biological and chemical warfare agent exposure. We trained professional actors to serve as SPs representing exposure to biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox

Treatment of acrophobia in virtual reality: the role of immersion and presence.

In this study the effects of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) were investigated in patients with acrophobia. Feelings of presence in VRET were systematically varied by using either a head-mounted display (HMD) (low presence) or a computer automatic virtual environment (CAVE) (high presence). VRET in general was found to be more effective than no treatment. No differences were found in effectiveness between VRET using an HMD or CAVE. Results were maintained at 6 months follow-up. Results of VRET were comparable with those of exposure in vivo (Cyberpsychology and Behavior 4 (2001) 335). I

Physiological monitoring as an objective tool in virtual reality therapy.

The goals of this study were twofold: (1) to investigate nonphobics' and phobics' physiological response in virtual environments, and (2) to analyze the trend of phobics' physiology during virtual reality (VR) treatment. As a measure of physiology, heart rate, skin resistance, and skin temperature were acquired. The data for two groups of participants were analyzed: 22 nonphobic participants (mean = 32 +/- 9.4 years) and 36 subjects with fear of flying (mean = 40 +/- 12.1 years) who met the DSM-IV criteria for fear of flying. As a result, skin resistance showed significant differences between

Virtual reality in the treatment of spider phobia: a controlled study.

This study explored whether virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy was effective in the treatment of spider phobia. We compared a treatment condition vs. a waiting list condition in a between group design with 23 participants. Participants in the VR treatment group received an average of four one-hour exposure therapy sessions. VR exposure was effective in treating spider phobia compared to a control condition as measured with a Fear of Spiders questionnaire, a Behavioural Avoidance Test (BAT), and severity ratings made by the clinician and an independent assessor. Eighty-three percent of patie

Repeated exposure of flight phobics to flights in virtual reality.

The present study examined the effects of repeated exposure of flight phobics to flights in virtual reality (VR). Flight phobics were randomly assigned either to complete one VR test flight followed by four VR exposure flights (VR group; N=15) in one lengthy session or to complete one VR test flight followed by a lengthy relaxation training session (relaxation group; N=15). All participants completed a second VR test flight at the end of the session. Fear reports and physiological fear reactions (heart rate, skin conductance level) during VR exposures were registered, and fear of flying was as

The use of virtual reality exposure in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

One possible alternative to standard in vivo exposure may be virtual reality exposure. Virtual reality integrates real-time computer graphics, body tracking devices, visual displays, and other sensory input devices to immerse a participant in a computer-generated virtual environment. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) is potentially an efficient and cost-effective treatment of anxiety disorders. VRE therapy has been successful in reducing the fear of heights in the first known controlled study of virtual reality in the treatment of a psychological disorder. Outcome was assessed on measures of anxi

Virtual reality as a metacognitive training tool for lucid dreaming.

INTRODUCTION: Lucid dreaming (LD) involves awareness of being in a dream during REM sleep and depends on the reactivation of metacognitive and reality-monitoring processes. This study tested whether a virtual reality (VR) intervention designed to rehearse lucid-dream-relevant metacognitive routines increases LD rates beyond baseline training, and whether generic VR exposure produces similar effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight participants with low previous LD experience completed a 5-week program of daily dream diaries and reality checks, assigned to: VR-experimental (n = 13), standa

Situational Awareness of Sepsis by Residents in a Virtual Reality Simulation.

OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is a major cause of pediatric mortality that can be mitigated by early intervention. Residents are often the first physicians to assess septic patients and must both recognize sepsis and effectively communicate the diagnosis to the interprofessional team-achieving both individual and team situational awareness. To inform resident educational interventions that may improve clinical outcomes, we must first understand the drivers of current practice. We sought to assess differences in rates in pediatric resident recognition of sepsis on an individually completed questionnaire ve

Transnasal endoscopy and the use of virtual reality: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) often require repeated esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) procedures to monitor disease progression and treatment response. These procedures typically involve general anesthesia, which is associated with short-term side effects and potential long-term risks. Transnasal endoscopy (TNE) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to EGD that can be performed without anesthesia. The use of virtual reality (VR) during TNE eliminates anesthesia exposure in patients requiring repeated EGD, while enhancing patient comfort and procedural
