Acquired central fusion disruption following cataract extraction.

Central sensory and motor fusion of images, once established, is usually maintained throughout life. Under certain circumstances, this ability may be lost. This gives rise to the syndrome known as horror fusionis, or acquired disruption of central fusion. We report the development of central fusion disruption in three patients with uniocular mature senile cataract. We postulate that this is the result of prolonged sensory deprivation in the cataractous eye. The loss of fusion results in a particularly troublesome type of intractable diplopia, characterized by the inability to either fuse or su

Unmet eye care needs among U.S. 5th-grade students.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence of a disparity in access to eye care services among adults in the U.S.; however, little is known about health disparities for children's eye care. PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for 5th-grade students' unmet eye care needs. METHODS: Data were collected from 5147 5th-grade students (aged 10-11 years) and their parents and primary caregivers (hereafter "parents") participating in the Healthy Passages study between fall 2004 and summer 2006 (analyzed in 2011). Logistic regression estimated the probability

Fifteen-minute monocular occlusion test compared with 45-minute monocular occlusion test in the evaluation of divergence excess intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: The prolonged monocular occlusion (PMO) test is used to eliminate tenacious proximal fusion in patients with divergence excess intermittent exotropia. The minimum necessary duration of PMO is unknown. This study was designed to determine whether 15 minutes of PMO test is comparable to 45 minutes of PMO. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, observational study included 22 patients (5-14 years of age) diagnosed with divergence excess intermittent exotropia. The main outcome measure was the subclassification of divergence excess intermittent exotropia. The secondary outcomes were t

Visual function and pattern visual evoked response in optic neuritis.

The disparity between clinical visual function and pattern visual evoked response (VER) was studied in 53 patients who had suffered an attack of optic neuritis (ON) more than six months before. The visual functions tested included Snellen visual acuity, colour vision, visual field, and contrast sensitivity. The effect of pattern presentation, check size, and luminance was tested by recording VERs with several stimulus configurations. VER amplitudes were found to be associated with the outcome of all four clinical tests, independently of check size, luminance, or the presentation method used. O

NONARTERITIC ANTERIOR ISCHEMIC OPTIC NEUROPATHY ASSOCIATED WITH IPSILATERAL HYPOPLASTIC INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY.

BACKGROUND: Vascular insufficiency of the optic nerve head is the cause of nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Carotid artery abnormalities are now considered as a predisposing factor for developing NAION. In this report, we present a case of NAION associated with ipsilateral internal carotid artery hypoplasia. METHODS: A 69-year-old female with decreased vision in her right eye due to NAION was evaluated. the magnetic resonance imaging showed a considerably smaller left internal carotid artery than the right side. The magnetic resonance angiography confirmed the disparity and per

Novel procedure for generating continuous flash suppression: Seurat meets Mondrian.

Continuous flash suppression (CFS) entails presentation of a stationary target to one eye and an animated sequence of arrays of geometric figures, the mask, to the other eye. The prototypical CFS sequence comprises different sized rectangles of various colors, dubbed Mondrians. Presented as a rapid, changing sequence to one eye, Mondrians or other similarly constructed textured arrays can abolish awareness of the target viewed by the other eye for many seconds at a time, producing target suppression durations much longer than those associated with conventional binocular rivalry. We have devise

Boundary segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax.

Active observer movement results in retinal image motion that is highly dependent on the scene layout. This retinal motion, often called motion parallax, can yield significant information about the boundaries between objects and their relative depth differences. Previously we examined segmentation from shear-based motion parallax, which consists of only relative motion information. Here, we examine segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax, which contains both relative motion and accretion-deletion. We utilized random dots whose motion was modulated with vertical low spatial fr

Estimating distance during self-motion: a role for visual-vestibular interactions.

A fundamental challenge for the visual system is to extract the 3D spatial structure of the environment. When an observer translates without moving the eyes, the retinal speed of a stationary object is related to its distance by a scale factor that depends on the velocity of the observer's self-motion. Here, we aim to test whether the brain uses vestibular cues to self-motion to estimate distance to stationary surfaces in the environment. This relationship was systematically probed using a two-alternative forced-choice task in which distance perceived from monocular image motion during passive

[Roles of posterior parietal cortex in stereopsis: characteristics of responses of axis-orientation-selective neurons in monkey caudal intraparietal area].

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Patients with parietal lesions may fail to adjust the orientation of their hand to that of a target object, or may make errors in judging the orientation of a bar. This suggests that the parietal cortex has a function in the discrimination of the orientation of objects. In this study we investigated the responses of axis-orientation-selective neurons in caudal intraparietal (CIP) area to stereoscopic stimuli. Among the characteristics we investigated responses to the length and thickness of objects, sensitivity to binocular disparity, and position invariance in depth. Computer generated stereo

Pulfrich revisited.

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereo-illusion resulting from latency disparities in the visual pathways. It is common after optic neuritis, but is also to be found with other conditions. The symptoms are often difficult for the patient to explain and for the physician to understand. Symptoms may be sufficiently disturbing to significantly interfere with a patient's life (e.g., prevention of driving). Treatment with the use of monocular tints is simple and effective.

Binocular Rivalry Measured 2 Hours After Occlusion Therapy Predicts the Recovery Rate of the Amblyopic Eye in Anisometropic Children.

PURPOSE: Recent studies on adults have shown that short-term monocular deprivation boosts the deprived eye signal in binocular rivalry, reflecting homeostatic plasticity. Here we investigate whether homeostatic plasticity is present also during occlusion therapy for moderate amblyopia. METHODS: Binocular rivalry and visual acuity (using Snellen charts for children) were measured in 10 children (mean age 6.2 ± 1 years) with moderate anisometropic amblyopia before the beginning of treatment and at four intervals during occlusion therapy (2 hours, 1, 2, and 5 months). Visual stimuli were orthogo

Stereomotion scotomas occur after binocular combination.

Stereomotion scotomas are a surprisingly common visual impairment that result in an observer's inability to accurately report the direction of an object's motion in depth in restricted parts of the visual field. In this study we investigated the role of binocular cues to motion in depth. Using stimuli containing only non-stationary cues to stereomotion, we measured sensitivity across the visual field and identified areas of significant impairment in stereomotion processing in over 50% of otherwise healthy observers. These impairments vary idiosyncratically in extent and location between observ

Binocular depth-from-motion in infantile and late-onset esotropia patients with poor stereopsis.

PURPOSE: There are at least two possible ways to detect motion-in-depth binocular without monocular cues: the binocular disparities at different times and a mechanism that detects interocular velocity differences. The perception of interocular velocity differences (Binocular depth-from-motion [BDFM]) depends on the relative velocity of the images on the retina of the left and right eyes, and this information can be experienced by normal and some strabismic patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of esotropic patients who have BDFM but have poor stereopsis. MET
