Optometry and vision science : official publication of the American Academy of Optometry2016eng
PURPOSE: Visual impairment presents significant risks for occupational injuries among farmworkers, a vulnerable population with limited access to vision care. Although previous research has noted farmworkers' low lifetime experience with vision screening and high rates of complaints of eye ailments and poor vision, there have been few screening data collected to evaluate these self-reports. The objectives of this analysis are to (1) describe farmworker visual health using standardized visual acuity screening data and self-reported visual function, and (2) to compare the screening and self-repo

PURPOSE: Scotland has comprehensive vision screening at age 3.5-5.5 years, with ~85% participation (40,000-50,000 episodes annually). Orthoptists deliver the screening, including presenting vision and tests for binocular vision anomalies (BVAnom). The aims were to investigate (1) changes in the prevalence of BVAnom, 2013-2022 and (2) whether less comprehensive screening of solely presenting vision would detect BVAnom.
METHODS: Data from eight Scottish Health Boards were available for 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Binocular vision tests included cover test, ocular m

Forty per cent of children known at our low vision centre at the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Linköping, Sweden, had been treated in a neonatal ward after birth. Only few of them were born prematurely. Half of the children had an additional neurological handicap. The present neonatal screening program detects most cases of congenital cataract and all cases with retinopathy of prematurity.

Recent research has identified a low-level transient visual system deficit in patients with reading disability. This deficit has been shown to have consequences on higher level perceptual and cognitive functions, including reading. This new information provides optometrists with a theoretical framework to expand the understanding of the relationship between vision and reading. In this paper, traditional concepts are described and an extensive literature review is provided. The impact of these processing deficits on reading performance is discussed based on metacontrast masking and foveal-paraf

CONTEXT: Screening could identify preschool-aged children with vision problems at a critical period of visual development and lead to treatments that could improve vision.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of screening preschool-aged children for impaired visual acuity on health outcomes.
METHODS: We searched Medline from 1950 to July 2009 and the Cochrane Library through the third quarter of 2009, reviewed reference lists, and consulted experts. We selected randomized trials and controlled observational studies on preschool vision screening and treatments, and studies of diagnostic

BACKGROUND: The number of elderly drivers is increasing. The primary purpose of public policy requiring vision screening for driver's license renewal is to identify, and, when necessary, restrict drivers with functional vision impairments. Because of age-related ocular conditions, elderly drivers, as a group, have a higher incidence and prevalence of functionally impaired vision. To date, there is no empirical evidence of a significant predictive relationship between changes in vision function and automobile crashes.
METHODS: Most states require vision screening for driver's license renewal,

INTRODUCTION: Special Olympics Germany is the German association of the largest global movement to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities. We offered all participants ophthalmological screening during the event in Offenburg, Baden-Württemberg, in 2017 as part of the health programme "Open Eyes - Better Vision".
METHODS: A team of optometrists took medical histories, examined refraction status, visual acuity, colour vision and orthoptic status. Four experienced physician

BACKGROUND: Visual problems in older people are common and frequently under-reported. The effects of poor vision in older people are wide reaching and include falls, confusion and reduced quality of life. Much of the visual impairment in older ages can be treated (e.g. cataract surgery, correction of refractive error). Vision screening may therefore reduce the number of older people living with sight loss.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects on vision of community vision screening of older people for visual impairment.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane C

OBJECTIVE: To establish whether the current vision screening practice in the Netherlands is effective in preventing permanent visual loss and to estimate the sensitivity of the programme.
SETTINGS: In the Netherlands, all children are invited for preverbal (1, 3, 6-9 and 14-24 months) and preschool (36, 45, and 60-72 months) vision screening. Screening attendance is high, but the effectiveness in reducing amblyopia is unknown.
METHODS: In a 7-year cohort study, 4624 children born in the city of Rotterdam between 16 September 1996 and 15 May 1997 were followed through all routine vision scree

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia screening can target reduced visual acuity (VA), its refractive risk factors, or both. VA testing is imprecise under 4 years of age, so automated risk-factor photoscreening appears an attractive option. This review considers photoscreening used in community services, focusing on costs, cost-effectiveness and scope of use, compared with EUSCREEN project Country Reports describing how photo- and automated screening is used internationally.
METHODS: A systematic narrative review was carried out of all English language photoscreening literature to September 10th 2018, using

BACKGROUND: Neurosensory deprivation associated with vision is a well-known fact in people with intellectual disability (ID). This work aims to report the visual status of a population with ID in Portugal.
METHODS: A vision screening protocol was conducted during two Special Olympics events. The vision protocol included personal medical history, ocular health evaluation, and clinical measures, such as visual acuity (VA), binocular vision, colour vision, refractive error, and intraocular pressure. This protocol was administered to 134 subjects.
RESULTS: Half of the subjects reported that they

Objective: Children with mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral (MEDB) problems may face higher risk of vision concerns and more complicated care pathways. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether vision care utilization, screening/referral steps, and vision-related outcomes differ by MEDB status in US children. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) Interactive Data Query outputs for children aged 3-17 years from 2019-2023. MEDB status was defined by the NSCH composite indicator (≥1 qualifying condition and/or me

BACKGROUND.: Co-occurring mobility issues and vision loss are prevalent in older adults. Vision loss can cause ambulation difficulties and falls. Community-dwelling older adults frequently require mobility-aids assessment by occupational therapists. However, therapists often lack access to medical documentation on vision or training in vision assessment to ensure that clients have adequate vision for safe mobility-aid use.
PURPOSE.: This study aimed to identify screening and assessment approaches to identify functional vision loss to guide mobility-aid prescription.
METHOD.: A scoping review

The effectiveness of a new visual field analyzer, the Takagi Automatic Tangent Screen ATS-85, in detecting glaucomatous patients was studied. The study population consisted of three groups of subjects: normal healthy volunteers, glaucomatous patients with defective visual fields, and glaucomatous patients with early visual-field defects. Our results indicated that the screening program of the ATS-85 could be a useful instrument particularly for epidemiologic investigations.

IMPORTANCE: Preventive care is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality among older adults. Vision impairment may be a barrier to accessing care and health promotion information and therefore may contribute to decreased preventive care uptake.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between self-reported vision impairment and uptake of preventive care services (ie, breast and colon cancer screenings and influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study using the 2015 and 2018 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and 2016 and 2018 Beh
