The magnocellular visual pathway and facial emotion misattribution errors in schizophrenia.

Many individuals with schizophrenia show impairment in labeling the emotion depicted by faces, and tend to ascribe anger or fear to neutral expressions. Preliminary research has linked some of these difficulties to dysfunction in the magnocellular (M) visual pathway, which has direct projections to subcortical emotion processing regions. The current study attempted to clarify these relationships using a novel paradigm that included a red background. Diffuse red light is known to suppress the M-pathway in nonpsychiatric adults, and there is preliminary evidence that it may have the opposite (st

Visual signal pathway reorganization in the Cacna1f mutant rat model.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the underlying pathologic mechanism of congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) by examining the characteristics of electrical signal transmission within the inner retinal circuit after Cacna1f gene mutation. METHODS: Retinas isolated from the spontaneous Cacna1f mutant rats or wild-type rats were placed into a recording chamber, with the ganglion cell layer facing the biochip electrode array. The light-driven responses of the retinal ganglion cells (RCGs) were recorded using a multielectrode array (MEA) system. In the electrical stimulus cases, charge-balanced bipha

Visual acuity of children treated with chemotherapy for optic pathway gliomas.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is the most common primary treatment modality for pediatric optic pathway gliomas (OPGs). Due to the risk of severe visual impairment, visual acuity (VA) has become a clinical parameter of fundamental importance for children with OPGs. Despite this reality, most studies omit crucial information necessary for analysis of the effect of chemotherapy on VA in patients with cerebral gliomas. The principal goal of this study was to determine the immediate and long-term visual outcome of children treated first with chemotherapy for OPGs. PROCEDURE: Retrospective, non-compara

Automated morphometry of the visual pathway in primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To establish whether primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is associated with a change in volume of the visual pathway structures between the eyes and the visual cortex. METHODS: To answer this question, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used in combination with automated segmentation and voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Eight patients with POAG and 12 age-matched control subjects participated in the study. Only POAG patients with bilateral glaucomatous visual field loss were admitted to the study. The scotoma in both eyes had to include the paracentral region and had to, at least part

Investigating the functional integrity of the dorsal visual pathway in autism and dyslexia.

Numerous reports of elevated global motion thresholds across a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders have prompted researchers to suggest that abnormalities in global motion perception are a result of a general deficiency in the dorsal visual pathway. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway at lower subcortical (sensitivity to flicker contrast) and higher cortical (sensitivity to global motion) levels in children with autism, children with dyslexia, and typically developing children, of similar age and ability. While children with autism demonstrated i

Pattern electroretinography (PERG) and an integrated approach to visual pathway diagnosis.

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) provides an objective measure of central retinal function, and has become an important element of the author's clinical visual electrophysiological practice. The PERG contains two main components, a positivity at approximately 50ms (P50) and a larger negativity at approximately 95ms (N95). The P50 component is affected by macular dysfunction with concomitant reduction in N95. The PERG therefore complements the Ganzfeld ERG in the assessment of patients with retinal disease. In contrast, the ganglion cell origins of the N95 component allow electrophysiologic

Visual pathway tumor: a heterogeneous tumor with a variable clinical course.

The aim of the study was to delineate the clinical characteristics of visual pathway tumor in children without neurofibromatosis-I. The authors reviewed the charts of all patients meeting these criteria (n = 12) who were followed in their center over a 13-year period. In 8 patients the disease was relentlessly progressive, and imaging showed a chiasmatic/hypothalamic, exophytic globular lesion. The remainder had a benign course with long periods of tumor stability; one showed some spontaneous visual improvement. The lesions of the latter subgroup were multilobular, with elongated posterior ext

Glial filament protein expression in astroglia in the mouse visual pathway.

We have studied the onset of expression of glial filament protein (GFP) in astrocytes along a single axon trajectory, the mouse retinal axon pathway, and the relationship of GFP expression to maturation of astroglial morphology. In fetal optic nerve from embryonic day (E) 12 to E16, primitive glia (neuroepithelial cells) lack GFP, but express vimentin and contain intermediate filaments. GFP is expressed at E17 in two gradients: cells in the optic nerve become GFP-positive first in the borders of the nerve, then in the central nerve by postnatal day (P)0. The second gradient is a distoproximal

The appearance of an L1-like molecule in the chick primary visual pathway.

A monoclonal antibody, 8D9, has been obtained that binds to axons in the chick nervous system. Biochemical and immunological experiments indicate that the 8D9 antigen is related to the mouse L1 cell-adhesion molecule. The results of immunohistochemical experiments using monoclonal antibody 8D9 to study the development of the chick visual system are consistent with the 8D9 antigen functioning in axon fasciculation.

[Bilateral visual pathway invasion of occipital astrocytoma: a case report].

A 33-year-old female presented to the ophthalmology clinic with right periorbital redness and pain for 12 hours. CT revealed right optic nerve thickening and enlargement. Cranial MRI demonstrated abnormalities in the corpus callosum, bilateral hippocampi, thalamus, basal ganglia, temporal-parietal lobes, and the left frontal lobe. Ocular B-scan ultrasound showed elevated optic disc and high echogenic signals in the right vitreous cavity. The patient had a history of surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy for a left occipital glioma two years prior, with pathology indicating as

Spotlight on Trans-Synaptic Degeneration in the Visual Pathway in Multiple Sclerosis.

A putative mechanism of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS) is trans-synaptic degeneration (TSD), whereby injury to a neuron leads to degeneration of synaptically connected neurons. The visual system is commonly involved in MS and provides an ideal model to study TSD given its well-defined structure. TSD may occur in an anterograde direction (optic neuropathy causing degeneration in the posterior visual pathway including the optic radiations and occipital gray matter) and/or retrograde direction (posterior visual pathway lesions causing retinal degeneration). In the current review, we

A unified global tractography framework for automatic visual pathway reconstruction.

The human visual pathway starts from the retina, passes through the retinogeniculate visual pathway, the optic radiation, and finally connects to the primary visual cortex. Diffusion MRI tractography is the only technology that can noninvasively reconstruct the visual pathway. However, complete and accurate visual pathway reconstruction is challenging because of the skull base environment and complex fiber geometries. Specifically, the optic nerve within the complex skull base environment can cause abnormal diffusion signals. The crossing and fanning fibers at the optic chiasm, and a sharp tur

Assessing the structure of the posterior visual pathway in bilateral macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration (MD) embodies a collection of disorders causing a progressive loss of central vision. Cross-sectional MRI studies have revealed structural changes in the grey and white matter in the posterior visual pathway in MD but there remains a need to understand how such changes progress over time. To that end we assessed the posterior pathway, characterising the visual cortex and optic radiations over a ~ 2-year period in MD patients and controls. We performed cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of the former. Reduced cortical thickness and white matter integrity were observe

Functional and Morphological Changes in the Visual Pathway in Patients with Graves' Orbitopathy.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to perform a functional and structural evaluation of the anterior visual pathway in patients with Graves' Orbitopathy (GO) using electrophysiological tests and OCT, as well as to identify potential parameters that could be useful in detecting early optic nerve damage. METHODS: 47 GO patients were enrolled in the study and divided into three groups, depending on their disease severity: Group 1 with mild GO, Group 2 with moderate-to-severe GO, and Group 3 with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). Pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP), flash visual evoked pote

Spatiotemporal dynamics of orthographic and lexical processing in the ventral visual pathway.

Reading is a rapid, distributed process that engages multiple components of the ventral visual stream. To understand the neural constituents and their interactions that allow us to identify written words, we performed direct intra-cranial recordings in a large cohort of humans. This allowed us to isolate the spatiotemporal dynamics of visual word recognition across the entire left ventral occipitotemporal cortex. We found that mid-fusiform cortex is the first brain region sensitive to lexicality, preceding the traditional visual word form area. The magnitude and duration of its activation are

[Neurosarcoidosis of the anterior visual pathway (a case report and literature review)].

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder of unknown nature. Patients often present with pulmonary, skin, eye, and orbital lesions. Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) is accompanied by granulomatous leptomeningitis and damage to the basal brain structures with formation of granulomas near the cranial nerves, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, cavernous sinuses, optic chiasm, and intracranial optic nerves. The optic nerves can be affected independently of the other CNS regions, which may be the first manifestation of the disease. The article presents two clinical cases of sar

Changes of Visual Pathway and Brain Connectivity in Glaucoma: A Systematic Review.

Background: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The increasing interest in the involvement of the cortical visual pathway in glaucomatous patients is due to the implications in recent therapies, such as neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. Objective: In this review, we outline the current understanding of brain structural, functional, and metabolic changes detected with the modern techniques of neuroimaging in glaucomatous subjects. Methods: We screened MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, LILACS, Trip Database, and NICE for original contributions published until 31

Visual pathway involvement in multiple sclerosis: Look straight in the eyes.

Visual symptoms are a common clinical manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS) and are frequently due to acute optic neuritis (ON). However, the entire visual pathway can be involved throughout the disease course. We describe the case of a young MS patient who experienced visual symptoms that were eventually found to be caused by retinal periphlebitis, an inflammatory process of the anterior visual pathway, which is common during MS, but rarely symptomatic. This case reinforces the concept that in all MS patients complaining visual symptoms, a complete work-up should be performed in order to r
