Perception and memory have distinct spatial tuning properties in human visual cortex.

Reactivation of earlier perceptual activity is thought to underlie long-term memory recall. Despite evidence for this view, it is unclear whether mnemonic activity exhibits the same tuning properties as feedforward perceptual activity. Here, we leverage population receptive field models to parameterize fMRI activity in human visual cortex during spatial memory retrieval. Though retinotopic organization is present during both perception and memory, large systematic differences in tuning are also evident. Whereas there is a three-fold decline in spatial precision from early to late visual areas

Effect of timing delay between visual and vestibular stimuli on heading perception.

Heading direction is perceived based on visual and inertial cues. The current study examined the effect of their relative timing on the ability of offset visual headings to influence inertial perception. Seven healthy human subjects experienced 2 s of translation along a heading of 0°, ±35°, ±70°, ±105°, or ±140°. These inertial headings were paired with 2-s duration visual headings that were presented at relative offsets of 0°, ±30°, ±60°, ±90°, or ±120°. The visual stimuli were also presented at 17 temporal delays ranging from -500 ms (visual lead) to 2,000 ms (visual delay) relative to the

Visual Imagery and Perception Share Neural Representations in the Alpha Frequency Band.

To behave adaptively with sufficient flexibility, biological organisms must cognize beyond immediate reaction to a physically present stimulus. For this, humans use visual mental imagery [1, 2], the ability to conjure up a vivid internal experience from memory that stands in for the percept of the stimulus. Visually imagined contents subjectively mimic perceived contents, suggesting that imagery and perception share common neural mechanisms. Using multivariate pattern analysis on human electroencephalography (EEG) data, we compared the oscillatory time courses of mental imagery and perception

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging during Visual Perception Tasks in Adolescents Born Prematurely.

OBJECTIVES: Impairments in visual perception are among the most common developmental difficulties related to being born prematurely, and they are often accompanied by problems in other developmental domains. Neural activation in participants born prematurely and full-term during tasks that assess several areas of visual perception has not been studied. To better understand the neural substrates of the visual perceptual impairments, we compared behavioral performance and brain activations during visual perception tasks in adolescents born very preterm (birth weight ≤1500 g or gestational age <3

Pure alexia with intact perception of complex visual stimuli: a case study.

After a stroke involving the left occipitotemporal cortex our patient shows a word-length effect and has problems to identify letters or numbers in strings of symbols. But he is normal in identifying isolated letters and in non-verbally categorizing even complex images such as faces or natural scenes. His cortical lesion is stretching from the visual word form area (VWFA) anteriorly causing additional problems to name visual stimuli and to match acoustic stimuli with images. We conclude that our patient suffers from pure alexia without deficits to identify even complex visual stimuli. Our resu

Audio-visual speech perception in adult readers with dyslexia: an fMRI study.

Developmental dyslexia is a specific deficit in reading and spelling that often persists into adulthood. In the present study, we used slow event-related fMRI and independent component analysis to identify brain networks involved in perception of audio-visual speech in a group of adult readers with dyslexia (RD) and a group of fluent readers (FR). Participants saw a video of a female speaker saying a disyllabic word. In the congruent condition, audio and video input were identical whereas in the incongruent condition, the two inputs differed. Participants had to respond to occasionally occurri

Believing is seeing: Changes in visual perception following treatment for height fear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People who are afraid of heights may have a perceptual bias, such that they see heights as higher than they truly are. The current study tested if there is a causal relationship between treatments for height fear and changes in perceptual bias. METHODS: Specifically, the effects on perceptual bias following three height fear interventions (exposure, cognitive bias modification for interpretations, and a combination of exposure and cognitive bias modification) and a control condition were examined in individuals with an extreme fear of heights (N = 107). RESULTS: Re

Linking optic radiation volume to visual perception in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

People with schizophrenia typically show visual processing deficits on masking tasks and other performance-based measures, while people with bipolar disorder may have related deficits. The etiology of these deficits is not well understood. Most neuroscientific studies of perception in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have focused on visual processing areas in the cerebral cortex, but perception also depends on earlier components of the visual system that few studies have examined in these disorders. Using diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), we investigated the structure of the primary sensory

Disruption of network for visual perception of natural motion in primary dystonia.

In healthy subjects, brain activation in motor regions is greater during the visual perception of "natural" target motion, which complies with the two-thirds power law, than of "unnatural" motion, which does not. It is unknown whether motion perception is normally mediated by a specific network that can be altered in the setting of disease. We used block-design functional magnetic resonance imaging and covariance analysis to identify normal network topographies activated in response to "natural" versus "unnatural" motion. A visual motion perception-related pattern (VPRP) was identified in 12 h

Is perception of visual verticality intact in patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia?

Idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) is a focal dystonia characterized by an abnormal tilted or twisted head position. This abnormal head position could lead to a distorted perception of the visual vertical and spatial orientation. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether the perception of the visual vertical is impaired in patients with CD. The subjective visual vertical test (SVV) was measured in 24 patients with CD and 30 controls. The SVV test is conducted in a completely darkened room. A laser bar is projected on an opposing white wall, which is deviated from the eart

Networks extending across dorsal and ventral visual pathways correlate with trajectory perception.

Despite its apparent importance in understanding the visual environment, neural mechanisms underlying perception of motion trajectories have been investigated less thoroughly compared with those of various other aspects of visual motion. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment, we focused on a recently reported visual illusion called the wriggling motion trajectory illusion (WMTI), which consists of dots that are actually moving straight and yet at the same time induce perception of curved trajectories. The use of this illusion enabled us to bypass confounding as

Reduced occipital alpha power indexes enhanced excitability rather than improved visual perception.

Several studies have demonstrated that prestimulus occipital alpha-band activity substantially influences subjective perception and discrimination of near-threshold or masked visual stimuli. Here, we studied the role of prestimulus power fluctuations in two visual phenomena called double-flash illusion (DFI) and fusion effect (FE), both consisting of suprathreshold stimuli. In both phenomena, human subjects' perception varies on a trial-by-trial basis between perceiving one or two visual stimuli, despite constant stimulation. In the FE, two stimuli correspond to veridical perception. In the DF

Altered dynamic coupling of lateral occipital complex during visual perception in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: There is mounting evidence that visual perception abnormalities in schizophrenia are partly explained by a dysfunction of the lateral occipital complex (LO). We previously demonstrated that schizophrenia patients had broader topography and reduced magnitude of activity of LO. However, the functional connectivity of LO with other brain regions during visual perception has not been directly investigated in schizophrenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with schizophrenia and eighteen matched controls performed a backward masking task during functional magnetic resonance i

Eagle-eyed visual acuity: an experimental investigation of enhanced perception in autism.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal accounts of sensory hypersensitivity in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have been noted since the first reports of the condition. Over time, empirical evidence has supported the notion that those with ASC have superior visual abilities compared with control subjects. However, it remains unclear whether these abilities are specifically the result of differences in sensory thresholds (low-level processing), rather than higher-level cognitive processes. METHODS: This study investigates visual threshold in n = 15 individuals with ASC and n = 15 individuals

Task-specific recruitment of dorsal and ventral visual areas during tactile perception.

Many studies have found that visual cortical areas are active during tactile perception. Here we used positron emission tomographic (PET) scanning in normally sighted humans to show that extrastriate cortical regions are recruited in a task-specific manner during perceptual processing of tactile stimuli varying in two dimensions. Mental rotation of tactile Forms activated a focus around the anterior part of the left intraparietal sulcus. Since prior studies have reported activity nearby during mental rotation of visual stimuli, this focus appears to be associated with the dorsal visual (visuos

Perception of spatial orientation in spasmodic torticollis. Part 2: The visual vertical.

Twenty-nine patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal control subjects were asked to align a target line to perceived earth vertical [visual vertical (VV)]. Settings were made against a whole-field random-dot background that was either stationary or rotating around the line of sight, and subjects performed the task upright and lying horizontally on their sides. Normal subjects were tested both head upright and after assuming a voluntary head tilt. Patients with ST set the VV close to true upright with a minimal deviation toward tilt of the head in contrast to norma

Use of filters to treat visual-perception problem creates adherents and sceptics.

Patients who think they have a visual-perception dysfunction known as scotopic sensitivity-Irlen syndrome have trouble reading and may experience almost-constant headaches. Some find they are helped by coloured filters developed by a California researcher, Helen Irlen, who published a book on the subject called Reading by the Colors. Although Irlen has been criticized for not publishing scientific proof of the validity of her theories, her techniques have found some support, including some within the medical community.

Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus in the Developing Rat Brain: Deficits of Visual Perception and Structural Changes in the Visual Cortex.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cortical visual deficits occur in hydrocephalus but the morphological changes in the visual cortex are not fully understood. This study assessed the population and cytoarchitecture of neurons in the cortex of neonatal and juvenile rats, in relation to the findings on assessment of visual perception. METHODS: Hydrocephalus was induced by injecting sterile kaolin (150 mg/l) into the cisterna magna of neonatal (7 days old) and juvenile (4 weeks old) rats. Vision was assessed using a dark chamber preference test prior to sacrifice at two and four weeks for the neonatal

Delayed visual perception and delayed visual evoked potentials in the spinal form of multiple sclerosis and in retrobulbar neuritis.

(1) We have used both subjective and evoked potential tests to study cases of multiple sclerosis with no history of retrobulbar neuritis (spinal patients) and compared them with patients with multiple sclerosis who had experienced an attack of retrobulbar neuritis (RBN). We measured the delay of steady-state evoked potentials (EPs) elicited by flicker in the medium-frequency (13-25 c/s) range, by flicker in the high-frequency (30-60 c/s) range, and by pattern-reversal. We also measured the delay in seeing (perceiving) both an increase of light intensity and a decrease of light intensity. (2) T

The dynamic contribution of the high-level visual cortex to imagery and perception.

Mental imagery and visual perception rely on the same content-dependent brain areas in the high-level visual cortex (HVC). However, little is known about dynamic mechanisms in these areas during imagery and perception. Here we disentangled local and inter-regional dynamic mechanisms underlying imagery and perception in the HVC and the hippocampus (HC), a key region for memory retrieval during imagery. Nineteen healthy participants watched or imagined a familiar scene or face during fMRI acquisition. The neural code for familiar landmarks and faces was distributed across the HVC and the HC, alt
