A persistent omphalomesenteric duct remnant is a rare finding, which typically presents in the pediatric population. Most commonly, it is encountered in the form of a Meckel's diverticulum. In rare instances, omphalomesenteric cysts have been reported in the pediatric population. We present a case of a symptomatic omphalomesenteric cyst in an adult male and our management of this entity.

A completely patent omphalomesenteric duct was seen in association with two cases of exomphalos minor. Both the patients also had limb anomalies, and one patient had an ileal duplication and colonic atresia. Both babies underwent emergency surgery to correct the anomalies, and one survived. There have been few reports of this combination of anomalies, and there is increasing appreciation that these lesions occur together more often than by chance.

Umbilical polyp is a rare disorder of the umbilical region in childhood. It is said to be the result of incomplete closure of the omphalomesenteric duct and presents as a red, moist umbilical mass after separation of the umbilical cord. Umbilical polyp originating from the urachus has not previously been reported. A 10-year-old boy with an umbilical polyp related to the urachus is presented to stress the possibility that umbilical polyps can originate not only from the omphalomesenteric duct but also from urachal remnants.

31 cases of complicated remnants of the omphalomesenteric duct are reviewed. In particular mechanical just as often as inflammatory complications are noted. There was a predominance of male infants with a mean age of 3.5 years. Surgery is recommended even for still non complicated Meckel's diverticula in childhood. There was no mortality.

Hemopoiesis in the yolk sac of chicken and crocodile embryos was studied at different developmental stages. Primary intravascular erythropoiesis is closely related to the formation of sanguineous islands appearing in the zone of the yolk growth in the visceral mesoderm. With the development of folds enlarging the surface of the yolk resorbtion, around the vessels running within the folds there appear foci of primary granulopoiesis. The process begins in the paravasal mesenchyma which is gradually disguised by hemopoietic cells (in chicken embryos--at the stage of 8 days, in crocodiles--23 days

We report the case of a 16-year-old girl explored for an ascite of great abundance responsible for a respiratory embarrassment. Its symptomatology proved to be secondary to a vitelline tumour of the ovary. It required several drainings of ascite before surgical operation. She had a conservative treatment followed up by a chemotherapy which allowed a clinical and biological remission. We report this observation considering the originality of the mode of revelation of the tumour. We insist in addition on the possibility of a conservative treatment.

Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly present in about 3% of the population and usually asymptomatic. Rarely, a mesodiverticular band extends from the tip of a Meckel's diverticulum to the mesentery, thought to be due to lack of involution of the left vitelline artery. The presence of this band creates a closed loop through which loops of bowel can become entrapped. Rare case reports have described incarceration of bowel and sudden death in children. We present such a case and discuss this entity.

Posterotestes gen. n. (Digenea: Apocreadiidae, Apocrcadiinae) is proposed for specimens with the following features: spiny body, posterior position of gonads, extension of vitelline follicles up to level of intestinal bifurcation and absent at post-testicular space, long oesophagus and extension of caeca up to anterior testis. Posterotestes unelen sp. n. is described from the intestine of the native fish, Percichthys trucha (Cuvier et Valenciennes) (Osteichthyes: Percichthyidae) from Patagonian Andean lakes.

We report a case of gastroschisis in which a paraumbilical band was found at the right margin of the abdominal wall defect and extended into the antimesenteric side of the small intestine. The band consisted of 2 thin cords. Microscopically, 1 band showed a fibrous tissue, and the other 1 revealed a unique vascular structure resembling the vitelline artery and vein, suggesting that the paraumbilical band represents a remnant of the yolk stalk that failed to be incorporated into the umbilical stalk. The origin of the paraumbilical band and an associated pathogenetic hypothesis of gastroschisis

Prenatally, the umbilicus is of paramount importance, providing the gateway between the mother and the fetus. As the fetus becomes increasingly autonomous at the end of the second month of fetal life, the connections (vitelline, urachal) diminish in significance and involute. Disturbances in this process can result in a wide variety of abnormalities, ranging from relatively minor defects identified at birth (umbilical granulation tissue) to life-threatening complications quiescent until late adulthood (urachal carcinoma). This section will review the 'state of the art' in evaluation and manage

Meckel's diverticulum is present in 2 per cent of the population with bowel obstruction as its most common complication. This case report describes an extremely rare complication of a Meckel's diverticulum, a cecal volvulus. The diagnosis of cecal volvulus was made preoperatively on abdominal X-rays; the diagnosis of a Meckel's diverticulum was made intraoperatively. The cecum was found to be twisted around a vitelline band on a broad-based Meckel's diverticulum extending to the umbilicus. The diverticulum was resected. The patient did well postoperatively and was discharged without any diffic

Two new species of the genus Allocreadium were isolated from the intestines of the Lake minnow Rhynchocypris percnura caught in the backwater of the Komissarovka River in the South of the Russian Far East. The morphology of A. anastasii n. sp. corresponds to that of Allocreadium sp. from Lake Khar (Mongolia) and Allocreadium sp. Belous, 1952 from the Primorsky region of Russia except for the preacetabular anterior border of the vitelline follicles in A. anastasii n. sp. from the Komissarovka River vs. at anterior half of ventral sucker in Allocreadium sp. Genetic analysis revealed the identity

Paratanaisia bragai is a digenetic trematode that reaches sexual maturity in the kidney collecting ducts of domestic and wild birds, while the snails Subulina octona and Leptinaria unilamellata serve as its intermediate hosts in Brazil. The present study analyzed the morphology and morphometry of P. bragai. Adult specimens of the parasite were collected from naturally infected Columba livia kidneys, fixed and prepared for observation via bright field and differential interference contrast light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The parasite has an elongated and flattened body, with

Tapeworms of the genus Paracaryophyllaeus Kulakovskaya, 1961 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) are specific parasites of loaches (Cypriniformes: Cobitoidea) and occur almost exclusively in the Palaearctic region. The only exception and example of vicariance over the borders of two zoogeographical regions is Paracaryophyllaeus lepidocephali (Kundu, 1985), an insufficiently known species described from the Indomalayan region, with uncertain generic allocation. In the present paper, the species is redescribed based on new material collected from the type host, Lepidocephalichthys guntea, in West Bengal,

Clonorchis sinensis fatty acid-binding protein (CsFABP) belongs to a multigene family of lipid-binding proteins and is considered to be a promising vaccine candidate for human clonorchiasis. In this study, binding characteristics of CsFABP have been examined for the first time. The recombinant CsFABP (rCsFABP) was found to bind 11-(dansylamino) undecanoic acid (DAUDA), causing a blue shift in the fluorescence emission from 543 to 531 nm with an excitation wavelength of 345 nm and a substantial increase in fluorescence intensity. Fluorimetric titration of rCsFABP with DAUDA exhibited an apparen

Although pregnant viviparous squamates are sometimes claimed to be able to resorb inviable eggs and embryos from the uterus, definitive evidence for such resorption is not available. After placing pregnant female Pseudemoia pagenstecheri into conditions under which embryonic development is terminated, we periodically harvested the gravid oviducts and examined them histologically. Females contained abnormal and degenerating eggs and embryos that had died in various stages of development. Dead embryos had undergone extensive cytolysis, dissolution, and aseptic necrosis and vitelline masses showe

Umbilical anomalies are a rare presentation in the pediatric patient. The differential diagnosis includes anomalies resulting from urachal and vitelline duct derivatives such as urachal sinus, urachal cyst, urachal diverticulum, patent urachus, herniated Meckel's diverticulum, umbilico-enteric fistula, or umbilical polyp. In this article, a case presentation of an umbilical anomaly along with the differential diagnosis and management options are discussed. Based upon this review of the literature, the authors propose a management algorithm for treating children with umbilical anomalies.

Two new species of Scyphophyllidium Woodland, 1927 are described from the Hooktooth shark, Chaenogaleus macrostoma (Bleeker), from the Persian Gulf, Iran. Scyphophyllidium hormuziense n. sp. is assigned to morphological category 2 of its genus because it possesses bothridial marginal loculi and an apical sucker on each flat bothridium, and lacks bothridial facial loculi. Within category 2, it is distinguished from its congeners, except for S. janineae (Ruhnke, Healy and Shapero, 2006), by possessing, rather than lacking, a prominent cephalic peduncle. It differs from S. janineae in the distrib

Fascioliasis is an important zoonotic helminthic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica and poses a serious threat to global public health. To evade the immune response of its host (humans or animals), F. hepatica secretes various antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione transferase (GST) to facilitate its invasion, migration and parasitism in vivo. To investigate the biological functions of a novel omega-class GST (GSTO), the molecular features of GSTO2 of F. hepatica were analyzed by online software, and the biochemical properties in vitro of recombinant GSTO2 (rGSTO2) were dissected. Then, the

Host mucins have crucial physical roles in preventing the parasitic establishment and maturation, and also in expelling the invading parasites. However, some parasites utilize mucinase enzymes to facilitate the infection. Recently, we have identified a mucinase enzyme of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, Ov-M60-like-1, which exhibits metallopeptidase activity against bovine submaxillary mucin substrate. Here, we aimed to study the localization of this enzyme in O. viverrini and the bile duct of hamsters using immunohistochemistry and functional analysis by mucin digestion in hamsters and
