Schistosomiasis affects more than 200 million people globally. The pathology of schistosome infections is due to chronic tissue inflammation and damage from immune generated granulomas surrounding parasite eggs trapped in host tissues. Schistosoma species are unique among trematode parasites because they are dioecious; females require paring with male parasites in order to attain reproductive maturity and produce viable eggs. Ex vivo cultured females lose the ability to produce viable eggs due to an involution of the vitellarium and loss of mature oocytes. In order to better understand schisto

Blue mussels (Mytilus sp.) are an economically important species for European aquaculture. Their importance as a food source is expected to increase in the coming net-zero society due to their low environmental footprint; however, their production is affected by anthropogenic stressors and climate change. During reproduction, lipids are key molecules for mussels as they are the main source of energy on which newly hatched embryos depend in the first days of their development. In this work, blue mussels of different origins are analysed, focusing on the differences in lipid composition between

Vitellogenin (VTG), an egg yolk precursor, is abnormally produced by male and juvenile oviparous species after exposure to estrogens. Plasma VTG in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) helped us understand their reproductive maturation and investigate it as a biomarker of contaminant exposure. The presence of VTG was screened in plasma from 404 loggerheads from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean using a freshwater turtle antibody in western blots. The concentrations of VTG were semiquantified using band intensities calibrated to results from a loggerhead antibody enzyme-linked immunoassay. Th

In fish, early puberty can lead to divergent growth trajectories and increased size dispersion within populations. In European sea bass, this pattern is evident by the end of the second year, with females of greater body weight generally tending to reach puberty earlier, although this association is not always consistent. This study investigates the factors influencing the relationship between growth and reproductive maturation in this teleost fish. Four female groups were defined based on body weight (small, S; large, L) and gonadal development (immature, I; advanced, A): SI, SA, LI, and LA.

IN BRIEF: The hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis integrates environmental and internal signals to tune reproductive functions. We hypothesized that in fish, Gnrh predominantly stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion, while Cck selectively regulates follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thereby uncovering a novel role for Cck as a metabolic gatekeeper that links reproductive activity with nutritional status.
ABSTRACT: In fish, the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis governs reproduction in response to environmental and internal signals. FSH regulates gonadal growth, while LH controls maturati

To provide updated information on life history for improved fishery management, the reproductive cycle of the finetooth shark Carcharhinus isodon from Northwest Atlantic (NWA) populations was investigated by examining temporal changes in morphology and histology of reproductive organs. Changes in plasma concentrations of gonadal sex hormones in relation to reproductive stage were also examined. Increases in testis width, epididymis head width, plasma testosterone concentrations and occurrence of mature spermatozoa were observed in male sharks between December and April, suggesting a seasonal p

In fish, oocyte maturation (resumption of meiosis after completion of vitellogenesis and before ovulation) is triggered by maturation inducing steroids (MIS) which generally appear to be secreted in the ovary in response to stimulation by a pituitary maturational gonadotropin. Converging data from different laboratories show that 17α-hydroxy, 20β-dihydroprogesterone (17α, 20β-OH-P) is the principal MIS in salmonoids; but clear identification remains to be done in other taxonomic groups. The experiments reported here in the rainbow troutSalmo gairdneri examine the possible involvement of oocyte

BACKGROUND: The precise mechanisms of hormone action responsible for the full course of events modulating folliculogenesis in crocodilian have not been determined, although histological features have been identified.
RESULTS: The Alligator sinensis ovarian morphological characteristics observed at 1, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 300 days post hatching(dph) revealed that the dynamic changes in germ cells varied in different meiotic and developmental stages, confirming that the processes of folliculogenesis were protracted and asynchronous. The presence of endogenous follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) mR

In the present experiments, the effect of 50-Hz alternating magnetic field on Drosophila melanogaster reproduction was studied. Newly eclosed insects were separated into identical groups of ten males and ten females and exposed to three different intensities of the ELF magnetic field (1, 11, and 21 G) continuously during the first 5 days of their adult lives. The reproductive capacity was assessed by the number of F1 pupae according to a well-defined protocol of ours. The magnetic field was found to decrease reproduction by up to 4.3%. The effect increased with increasing field intensities. Th

Plasma levels of progesterone, 17 alpha-OH-progesterone, testosterone, and estradiol-17 beta were measured by radioimmunoassay during the ovarian cycles of two groups of female tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. One group included females that successfully mouthbrooded fry, while the other group consisted of females in which the zygotes were either removed or swallowed within 1 day after spawning. The mouthbrooders had a longer ovarian cycle (about 40 days) and were sampled 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 days after spawning. The non-mouthbrooders had an ovarian cycle of about 25 day

BACKGROUND: Bioelectrical signals are known to be involved in the generation of cell and tissue polarity as well as in cytoskeletal dynamics. The epithelium of Drosophila ovarian follicles is a suitable model system for studying connections between electrochemical gradients, patterns of cytoskeletal elements and axial polarity. By interactions between soma and germline cells, the transforming growth factor-α homolog Gurken (Grk) establishes both the anteroposterior and the dorsoventral axis during oogenesis.
RESULTS: In the follicular epithelium of the wild-type (wt) and the polarity mutant g

BACKGROUND: Solenopsis invicta queens experience significant behavioral and physiological changes after mating, which are essential for their reproductive success. We investigated differences in ovary gene expression in virgin alate queens, newly mated queens, and mated queens to identify candidate genes associated with their physiological transition to mature egg-laying queens. Virgin queens and mated queens were obtained from field colonies and newly mated queens were collected from the ground immediately after their mating flight. Whole ovaries of virgin alate queens, and germaria and vitel

Gonadal development in Ruditapes philippinarum involves germ cell formation, sex differentiation, vitellogenesis, and maturation, regulated by complex genes-hormone interactions. To elucidate these mechanisms, multi-omics analyses (transcriptomics, proteomics, and steroid targeted metabolomics) and qPCR were applied to gonads across developmental stages in clams. Differential expression analysis revealed 332 testicular and 560 ovarian genes, alongside 174 testicular and 107 ovarian proteins. Integrated omics identified 12 concordantly annotated gene-protein pairs. Expressed levels for 14 genes

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepods, Caligida) is a marine ectoparasite infecting salmonid fishes in the northern hemisphere. At present, salmon lice infections are the most severe disease problem in the salmon farming industry causing significant economic losses. Due to development of resistance towards available chemotherapeutants, it is clear that new chemotherapeutants or non-chemical control methods are essential to manage the parasite in the future. The TOR signaling pathway is present in all metazoans and is a major regulator of cellular activity according to nutrient ava

In vertebrates, the regulation of gametogenesis is under the control of gonadotropins (Gth), follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh). In fish, the physiological role of Gths is not fully understood, especially in species with asynchronous ovarian development. To elucidate the role of Gths in species with asynchronous ovary, we studied European hake (Merluccius merluccius) during the reproductive season. For this aim, we first cloned and sequenced both hormones. Then, we characterized their amino acid sequence and performed phylogenetic analyses to verify the relationshi

In crustaceans, a range of physiological processes involved in ovarian maturation occurs in organs of the cephalothorax including the hepatopancrease, mandibular and Y-organ. Additionally, reproduction is regulated by neuropeptide hormones and other proteins released from secretory sites within the eyestalk. Reproductive dysfunction in captive-reared prawns, Penaeus monodon, is believed to be due to deficiencies in these factors. In this study, we investigated the expression of gene transcripts in the cephalothorax and eyestalk from wild-caught and captive-reared animals throughout ovarian mat

BACKGROUND: Culex pipiens pallens is a significant vector of mosquito-borne diseases, and its autogenous trait exerts a critical impact on population expansion and disease transmission risks. Understanding the regulatory effect of gut-specific symbiotic bacteria on the autogeny of Cx. pipiens pallens will provide a microbial perspective to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the formation of autogenous reproductive strategies and provide a theoretical basis for the development of novel mosquito-borne disease control.
METHODS: Autogenous Cx. pipiens pallens were utilized to isolate and culture

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) inhabiting Lake Apopka, Florida are exposed to high levels of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and dietary uptake is a significant route of exposure for these apex predators. The objectives of this study were to determine the dietary effects of two organochlorine pesticides (p, p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene; p, p' DDE and methoxychlor; MXC) on the reproductive axis of largemouth bass. Reproductive bass (late vitellogenesis) were fed one of the following diets: control pellets, 125ppm p, p'-DDE, or 10ppm MXC (mg/kg) for 84days. Due to the

The insect steroid hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), is a key factor controlling critical developmental events of embryogenesis, larval molting, metamorphosis, and, in some insects, reproduction. We are interested in understanding the molecular basis of the steroid hormone ecdysone action in insect egg development. The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in addition to being an important vector of human diseases, represents an outstanding model for studying molecular mechanisms underlying egg maturation due to stringently controlled, blood meal-activated reproductive events in this insect.

Mosquito-borne viruses continue to affect billions of people globally, posing a severe health risk and an economic burden. Aedes albopictus (Skuse), a highly invasive mosquito species, has repeatedly invaded and increased its presence, serving as a key vector of dengue virus, yellow fever virus (YFV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), causing frequent outbreaks of related viral diseases. This study investigated the impact of larval diet quantity on larval duration and adult body size. The effect of adult mosquito body size on various aspects of Ae. albopictus was also examined,
