Emission Rates of Volatile Organic Compounds from Humans.

Human-emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are mainly from breath and the skin. In this study, we continuously measured VOCs in a stainless-steel environmentally controlled climate chamber (22.5 m3, air change rate at 3.2 h-1) occupied by four seated human volunteers using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Experiments with human whole body, breath-only, and dermal-only emissions were performed under ozone-free and ozone-present conditions. In addition, the effect of temperature, relative humidity, clothing type, and age was

Volatile fatty acid platform - a cornerstone for the circular bioeconomy.

Annually, the EU produces more than 100 million tonnes of urban biowaste, which is largely under-valorized and in some cases even still landfilled without any energy or material recovery. If Europe wants to be ready for the future, it will need to make better use of this large biomass potential within a circular economy approach. The research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme entitled 'VOLATILE-Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform for biopolymers, bioactive compounds and chemical building blocks' aimed to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) fro

Stock market volatility and the COVID-19 reproductive number.

The media has prominently featured the totemic reproductive number R in its COVID-19 coverage despite being an imperfect measure of the degree of infectivity of the virus. As such, it conveys information to the public regarding the state of the pandemic that affects market sentiment. We analyze how news about R affects the volatility in stock markets worldwide and find that when R is greater than one, which means the spread of the disease should soar, it has a positive and significant effect on volatility. Our results hold after controlling for government interventions and several robustness c

Volatile Organic Compounds in Underground Shopping Districts in Korea.

Underground shopping districts (USDs) are susceptible to severe indoor air pollution, which can adversely impact human health. We measured 24 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in 13 USDs throughout South Korea from July to October 2017, and the human risk of inhaling hazardous substances was evaluated. The sum of the concentrations of the 24 VOCs was much higher inside the USDs than in the open air. Based on factor analysis, six indoor air pollution sources were identified. Despite the expectation of a partial outdoor effect, the impacts of the indoor emissions were significant, resulting in a

Sorption of volatile organic compounds on non-activated biochar.

This work dealt with the determination of the suitability of sorption of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on biochars prepared from neem, sugarcane and bamboo feedstocks. Six different VOCs namely benzene, toluene, methyl chloride, xylene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride were used in a laboratory-scale set-up on non-activated biochars prepared via slow pyrolysis (350-550 °C). Although all the chars showed considerable sorption but amongst them N3 (neem-based biochar) showed the maximum removal efficiency (65.5 mg g-1 for toluene). Variation in pyrolysis temperature and feedstock type show

Microbial volatile communication in human organotypic lung models.

We inhale respiratory pathogens continuously, and the subsequent signaling events between host and microbe are complex, ultimately resulting in clearance of the microbe, stable colonization of the host, or active disease. Traditional in vitro methods are ill-equipped to study these critical events in the context of the lung microenvironment. Here we introduce a microscale organotypic model of the human bronchiole for studying pulmonary infection. By leveraging microscale techniques, the model is designed to approximate the structure of the human bronchiole, containing airway, vascular, and ext

Volatile anesthetic for the control of posthypoxic refractory myoclonic status.

Posthypoxic myoclonus (Lance-Adams syndrome) is characterized by myoclonus involving multiple muscle groups which is resistant to most conventional antiepileptic drugs. We present a case of hypoxic brain injury-induced myoclonic status epilepticus successfully controlled with isoflurane. The antimyoclonic effects of isoflurane are likely due to potentiation of inhibitory postsynaptic GABAA receptor-mediated currents and its effects on thalamocortical pathways. It is effective even when intravenous agents fail to control myoclonus. It may be a useful alternative to intravenous anesthetics as a

PDMS-coated fiber volatile organic compounds sensors.

The functionality of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based interferometric fiber sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. Two interferometric configurations are considered in this work, namely Fabry-Perot (FP) and Sagnac interferometers (SI). Both sensors are functionalized with a thin layer of VOC-sensitive polymer: PDMS, whose degree of swelling varies as a function of VOC concentrations. This swelling effect will result in an optical path length and birefringence modulation for FP and SI sensors, respectively. In this paper, the

Bioactivity of volatile organic compounds produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii.

Pseudomonas tolaasii is the main bacterial pathogen of several mushroom species. In this paper we report that strains of P. tolaasii produce volatile substances inducing in vitro mycelia growth inhibition of Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii, and Agaricus bisporus and P. ostreatus basidiome tissue blocks brown discoloration. P. tolaasii strains produced the volatile ammonia but not hydrogen cyanide. Among the volatiles detected by GC-MS, methanethiol, dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), and 1-undecene were identified. The latter, when assayed individually as pure compounds, led to similar effects noti

[Analysis of human tissue samples for volatile fire accelerants].

In police investigations of fires, the cause of a fire and the fire debris analysis regarding traces of fire accelerants are important aspects for forensic scientists. Established analytical procedures were recently applied to the remains of fire victims. When examining lung tissue samples, vapors inhaled from volatile ignitable liquids could be identified and differentiated from products of pyrolysis caused by the fire. In addition to the medico-legal results this evidence allowed to draw conclusions as to whether the fire victim was still alive when the fire started.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) fingerprint of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a profoundly life changing condition and once diagnosis occurs, this is typically at a relatively late stage into the disease process. Therefore, a shift to earlier diagnosis, which means several decades before the onset of the typical manifestation of the disease, will be an important step forward for the patient. A promising diagnostic and screening tool to answer this purpose is represented by breath and exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. In fact, human exhaled breath contains several thousand of VOCs that vary in abundance and number in correlat

Production of bioactive volatiles by different Burkholderia ambifaria strains.

Increasing evidence indicates that volatile compounds emitted by bacteria can influence the growth of other organisms. In this study, the volatiles produced by three different strains of Burkholderia ambifaria were analysed and their effects on the growth of plants and fungi, as well as on the antibiotic resistance of target bacteria, were assessed. Burkholderia ambifaria emitted highly bioactive volatiles independently of the strain origin (clinical environment, rhizosphere of pea, roots of maize). These volatile blends induced significant biomass increase in the model plant Arabidopsis thali

Biomedically important pathogenic fungi detection with volatile biomarkers.

Volatile chemical profiles collected from the headspace of Aspergillus fumigatus (a pathogenic fungus that causes invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and chronic fungal sinusitis) grown on media with the connective tissue protein elastin, found in lung tissue, contained a large abundance of the sesquiterpene farnesene (3,7,11-trimethyl-1,3,6,10-dodecatetraene) and, depending on extraction time and sorbent material, other farnesene isomers and sesquiterpenes such as bisabolene (methyl-4-(6-methylhepta-1,5-dien-2-yl)cyclohex-1-ene). Effects of volatile substance abuse on the respiratory system in adolescents.

AIM: Inhalant abuse is a prevalent and often overlooked form of substance abuse in adolescents. Chronic inhalant abuse can damage respiratory, cardiac, renal, hepatic, and neurologic systems. This study aims to determine the physiologic effects of inhaling solvents on the respiratory functions. METHODS: The general health status of the subjects was assessed by history taking, physical examination and a questionnaire which was designed to show the severity of respiratory symptoms. Spirometry, ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy, and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) were performed to a

Volatile sulphur compounds in morning breath of human volunteers.

OBJECTIVE: morning breath contains elevated concentrations of volatile sulphur components (VSCs). Therefore, morning breath is recognised as a surrogate target for interventions on breath quality. Nevertheless, factors influencing morning breath are poorly understood. Our aim was to evaluate concentrations of VSC at the time of awakening. METHODS: a procedure was developed to collect breath samples at home. Intra- and inter-person variations were determined in two small studies based on measurements of hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide in healthy volunteers. RESULTS:

Influence of anxiety on the production of oral volatile sulfur compounds.

Since many patients complain about halitosis without there being any clinical evidence of its cause, psychological symptoms have been pointed out as halitosis-inducing factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of anxiety on the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). Seventeen undergraduate men in good oral and general health participated in this study, after approval by the ethics committee. The volunteers were requested to refrain from toothbrushing, using mouth rinse and eating on the experimental day. Before presenting the anxiogenic condition, the volunteer was a

Mass balance studies of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon phytoremediation.

In field-scale mass balance studies of poplar remediation of carbon tetrachloride (CT), more than 95% of the mass of CT was degraded with all of the CT chlorine accountable as chloride ion accumulation in the soil. Atmospheric loss of CT through leaf transpiration and trunk diffusion was insignificant. These findings are consistent with previously reported uptake and degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by poplar. Poplar phytoremediation of CT and TCE results in little decrease in aqueous concentration, since water is taken up at about the same rate as the chlorinated compounds. From this re

Volatile anesthetics and succinylcholine in cardiac ryanodine receptor defects.

Familial polymorphic (catecholaminergic) ventricular tachycardia is an arrhythmogenic cardiac disorder caused by mutations of the myocardial isoform of the ryanodine receptor gene (RyR2). Mutations of the corresponding gene in the skeletal muscle (RyR1) predispose its carriers to malignant hyperthermia upon use of volatile anesthetics or succinylcholine, which further deteriorate the inherited intracellular calcium release disorder. We report a series of patients with cardiac RyR defects who underwent general anesthesia without complications. Succinylcholine and volatile anesthetics did not ha

On the importance of exposure variability to the doses of volatile organic compounds.

The connection between occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the resulting internal doses is complicated by variability in air levels from day to day and by nonlinear kinetics of metabolism. We investigated long-term liver doses of VOCs and their metabolites using a physiologically based toxicokinetic model, to which 10,000 random 8-h exposures were inputted. Three carcinogenic VOCs were studied (i.e., benzene, perchloroethylene, and acrylonitrile); these compounds are all bioactivated in the liver and represent a wide range of an important toxicokinetic parameter Vmax
