Digital design and fabrication of multi-material hand orthoses to allow an athlete with scleroderma to play sitting volleyball.

Scleroderma is a chronic and progressive autoimmune disorder of connective tissues often causing lesions and deformities of the hands. Individuals affected by this condition experience daily life limitations and are typically unable to take part in sport activities that involve impacts on the hands. In this article we describe the design and manufacturing of custom-made hand orthoses to play sitting volleyball, for an elite paralympic athlete affected by scleroderma. The devices consist of a carbon fibre shell with an internal silicone padding and an external polymeric multilayer cover. The ma

Women's intercollegiate volleyball and tennis: effects of warm-up, competition, and practice on saliva levels of cortisol and testosterone.

In virtually all sports, participants "warm-up" prior to formal competition. Women athletes from a highly ranked varsity college volleyball team and, in a second study, a highly ranked varsity college tennis team gave saliva samples before warm-up, at mid-warm-up (volleyball) or after warm-up (tennis), and immediately after intercollegiate competition. For volleyball and tennis, warm-up was associated with a substantial elevation in saliva levels of testosterone which was carried over through the period of actual competition. Cortisol levels were relatively unchanged during warm-up, but typica

Case Report: HHS-spectrum distal palmar arterial thrombosis in a volleyball athlete with provocative-position thoracic outlet narrowing.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a rare condition (∼1-3 per 100,000) caused by neurovascular compression at the thoracic outlet. Arterial involvement is uncommon and may result from chronic or dynamic subclavian artery compression leading to endothelial injury, thrombosis, and distal ischemia. Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is an uncommon cause of hand ischemia due to repetitive trauma to the ulnar artery and palmar circulation and has been reported in athletes engaged in repetitive high-impact hand activities (e.g., baseball, karate, golf, volleyball). Real-time changes in player-perceived psychological momentum across scoring runs in volleyball: a single-match case study.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological momentum (PM) has been proposed to be associated with athletic performance, yet athletes' real-time experiences of PM during competition remain understudied. This single-match case study examined changes in male high school volleyball players' perceived PM across scoring runs and whether these patterns differed between two teams. METHODS: Seventeen players (Team A, n = 8; Team B, n = 9) participated in a research-organized intra-squad match. After each rally, players verbally rated their own team's PM on a 7-point scale. Immediate within-player PM changes following

Relationship between volleyball spike jump height and lower limb kinetics is stronger for orientation leg than rear leg.

The orientation and rear legs have different roles in the spike jump (SPJ) in volleyball, yet the relationship between the jump height and kinetics of each leg remains underexplored. We aimed to clarify the relationships between jump height and kinetics of the orientation and rear legs in the SPJ. This study included 18 female college volleyball players. The experimental trial comprised an SPJ with a three-step run-up. The motion and ground reaction forces were measured using eight high-speed cameras and two force plates. Kinetic variables from the last foot contact to take-off were calculated

Delayed proximal hamstring tendon repair after ischial tuberosity apophyseal fracture in a professional volleyball athlete: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ischial tuberosity apophyseal fractures are avulsion fractures of the anatomic footprint of the proximal hamstring tendons. Generally, these injuries are rare and frequently occur in skeletally immature, active patients due to incomplete ossification. Depending on the fragment displacement, non-operative or operative treatment approaches are used. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 29-year-old professional volleyball athlete who has suffered from a nonunion avulsion fracture for 14 years. Isolated suture anchor fixation was performed after open excision of a large bony fragm

The effect of static and dynamic core exercises on serve and spike speed in young volleyball players: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Volleyball is a high-intensity team sport demanding explosive upper-body skills whose performance depends on effective kinetic chain transfer through the core musculature. Although core training is widely incorporated into athletic conditioning, the differential effects of static versus dynamic core protocols on sport-specific ball-velocity outcomes remain insufficiently examined, particularly in adolescent athletes. This study investigated the effects of a six-week supplementary static or dynamic core exercise program on serve speed and spike speed in elite young male volleyball p
