Mechanisms and weapons in physical elder abuse injuries: Findings from legally adjudicated cases.

INTRODUCTION: Elder abuse is common, but many characteristics have not been well-described, including injury mechanisms and weapons in physical abuse. Better understanding of these may improve identification of elder abuse among purportedly unintentional injuries. Our goal was to describe mechanisms of injury and weapons used and their relation to injury patterns. METHODS: We partnered with District Attorney's offices in 3 counties and systematically examined medical, police, and legal records from 164 successfully prosecuted physical abuse cases of victims aged ≥60 from 2001 to 2014. RESULT

Snake fangs from the Lower Miocene of Germany: evolutionary stability of perfect weapons.

There is a general consensus that most of today's nonvenomous snakes are descendants of venomous snakes that lost their venomous capabilities secondarily. This implies that the evolutionary history of venomous snakes and their venom apparatus should be older than the current evidence from the fossil record. We compared some of the oldest-known fossil snake fangs from the Lower Miocene of Germany with those of modern viperids and elapids and found their morphology to be indistinguishable from the modern forms. The primary function of recent elapid and viperid snake fangs is to facilitate the ex

Terrorism and weapons of mass destruction: managing the behavioral reaction in primary care.

Any terrorist attack using weapons of mass destruction will result in substantial psychological trauma and stress. Primary care and emergency clinics will likely see patients who have stress-related emotional or physical symptoms, or exacerbations of preexisting health concerns. Significant psychological and behavioral reactions to an attack with weapons of mass destruction are certain, include both group and individual reactions, and will follow a predictable course. Possible group reactions include mass panic, acute outbreaks of medically unexplained symptoms, and chronic cases of medically

Seascape with monkeys and guinea-pigs: Britain's biological weapons research programme, 1948-54.

The British biological weapons (BW) research programme based at Porton Down continued after the Second World War. Five series of BW experiments with animals at sea were undertaken to supplement laboratory work. The causative organisms for plague, brucellosis, tularemia and later Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis and Vaccinia viruses were tested in the Caribbean near Antigua in the late 1940s, in Hebridean waters (north-west Scotland) in the early 1950s and off Nassau in the Bahamas in 1953-54. In September 1952, at the end of Operation 'Cauldron' off the Isle of Lewis, a trawler, the Carella

Biological weapons and bioterrorism preparedness: importance of public-health awareness and international cooperation.

Biological weapons and biological terrorism have recently come into focus due to the deliberate release of Bacillus anthracis via mail delivered in the USA. Since the 1930s, biological weapons have been developed in a number of countries. In 1975, the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention entered into force; this prohibits the use of these weapons and has been signed by a large majority of countries (144). Unfortunately, several countries failed to respect this treaty. The Soviet Union continued and expanded its biological weapons program, and after the Gulf War it was revealed that Iraq als

Biological weapons and bioterrorism in the first years of the twenty-first century.

This paper evaluates four recent developments in biological-weapons politics and bioterrorism. First is American opposition to finalization of a verification protocol for the Biological Weapons Convention; second, a successful attempt at mass-casualty terrorism; third, an ongoing investigation into the bioterrorist capabilities of the al Qaeda network; and, fourth, a series of fatal anthrax attacks in the United States. The first of these evaluations is informed by interviews conducted between 2000 and 2002 with policy principals in the United States and elsewhere.

New and improved vaccines. Promising weapons against varicella, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever.

The initial motives behind development of vaccines were to protect against life-threatening infections (eg, rabies, diphtheria), to eradicate sweeping outbreaks of serious diseases (eg, paralytic poliomyelitis, smallpox), and to prevent diseases in a vulnerable population by the immunization of surrogates (eg, rubella immunization to prevent congenital rubella syndrome). Now a fourth motive emerges: prevention of less serious infections to improve quality of life. The advantages of new vaccines and immunization programs should no longer be measured exclusively in terms of the number of lives s

Beyond the glitter: gold nanoparticles as powerful weapons against multi-drug resistant pathogens.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have emerged as promising antimicrobial agents in the fight against multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Their distinctive physicochemical properties allow them to target a broad spectrum of MDR microorganisms, including highly virulent strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Candida albicans. AuNPs exert potent antimicrobial effects through various mechanisms, including bacterial growth inhibition, biofilm disruption, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and enhan

Armed stem to stinger: a review of the ecological roles of scorpion weapons.

Scorpions possess two systems of weapons: the pincers (chelae) and the stinger (telson). These are placed on anatomically and developmentally well separated parts of the body, that is, the oral appendages and at the end of the body axis. The otherwise conserved body plan of scorpions varies most in the shape and relative dimensions of these two weapon systems, both across species and in some cases between the sexes. We review the literature on the ecological function of these two weapon systems in each of three contexts of usage: (i) predation, (ii) defense and (iii) sexual contests. In the la

Volatile secondary metabolites as aposematic olfactory signals and defensive weapons in aquatic environments.

Olfaction is considered a distance sense; hence, aquatic olfaction is thought to be mediated only by molecules dissolved in water. Here, we challenge this view by showing that shrimp and fish can recognize the presence of hydrophobic olfactory cues by a "tactile" form of chemoreception. We found that odiferous furanosesquiterpenes protect both the Mediterranean octocoral Maasella edwardsi and its specialist predator, the nudibranch gastropod Tritonia striata, from potential predators. Food treated with the terpenes elicited avoidance responses in the cooccurring shrimp Palaemon elegans Rejecti

Electrical safety of conducted electrical weapons relative to requirements of relevant electrical standards.

INTRODUCTION: TASER(®) conducted electrical weapons (CEW) deliver electrical pulses that can inhibit a person's neuromuscular control or temporarily incapacitate. TASER X26, X26P, and X2 are among CEW models most frequently deployed by law enforcement agencies. The X2 CEW uses two cartridge bays while the X26 and X26P CEWs have only one. The TASER X26P CEW electronic output circuit design is equivalent to that of any one of the two TASER X2 outputs. The goal of this paper was to analyze the nominal electrical outputs of TASER X26, X26P, and X2 CEWs in reference to provisions of several interna

Cancer mortality risk among military participants of a 1958 atmospheric nuclear weapons test.

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine if Navy veterans who participated in an atmospheric nuclear test in 1958 were at increased risk of death from certain cancers. METHODS: Cancer mortality risk of 8554 Navy veterans who participated in an atmospheric nuclear test in the Pacific was compared with that of 14,625 Navy veterans who did not participate in any test. Radiation dosage information was obtained from film badges for 88% of the test participants. RESULTS: The median radiation dose for the test participants was 388 mrem (3.88 millisieverts [mSv]). Armed Phages: A New Weapon in the Battle Against Antimicrobial Resistance.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections necessitates the exploration of alternative antimicrobial strategies, with phage therapy emerging as a viable option. However, the effectiveness of naturally occurring phages can be significantly limited by bacterial defense systems that include adsorption blocking, restriction-modification, CRISPR-Cas immunity, abortive infection, and NAD+ depletion defense systems. This review examines these bacterial defenses and their implications for phage therapy, while highlighting the potential of phages' bioengineering to over

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections: Could eravacycline be a new weapon for clinicians?

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging, multidrug-resistant pathogen increasingly associated with nosocomial infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients such as those undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or affected by oncological diseases. Therapeutic options are limited due to intrinsic and acquired resistance mechanisms, including β-lactamases and efflux pumps. Although minocycline and trimethoprim-ulfamethoxazole are standard treatments, recent evidence suggests that eravacycline, a novel fluorocycline, may be effective in vitro, though clinical dat

Combatting Pseudomonas aeruginosa with β-Lactam Antibiotics: A Revived Weapon?

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a significant threat to public health as an aggressive, opportunistic pathogen. The use of β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, monobactams, and carbapenems remains a front-line treatment against P. aeruginosa. However, the widespread use of β-lactams has led to the emergence of β-lactam-resistant isolates that significantly increase the economic burden and risk of mortality in patients. With the declining productivity of the antibiotic discovery pipeline, research has investigated synergistic agents to revive the use of β-lactam antibiotics again

Ocular injuries by less-lethal weapon: a view from Switzerland.

Dear Editor-in-chief: Thank you for focussing on this troubling subject in your issue 1/2024. It confirms that many of the difficulties involved are similar worldwide. Countries that use less-lethal weapons include Switzerland, the only Western European democracy besides France to employ multiple kinetic impact projectiles. Our rubber scattershot is comparatively small and light but has led to an uninterrupted series of severe eye injuries since 1980. Legal authorities have long questioned whether these were due to rubber ammunition, though ophthalmologists always knew what was going on. Commu
