A case of thrombosed giant aneurysm of the azygos anterior cerebral artery: clipping under monitoring of motor evoked potentials of the lower extremities.

Giant aneurysms of the distal anterior cerebral artery (ACA), especially the azygos ACA, are rare. We treated a patient with giant aneurysm of the azygos ACA who underwent aspiration of thrombus and clipping under monitoring of motor evoked potentials of the lower extremities (L-MEPs), resulting in remarkable recovery of motor and intellectual function. A 72-year-old male was admitted with left motor weakness persisting for 2 weeks. Neurologically, disorientation and intellectual impairment were also noted. Imaging disclosed a 60-mm diameter aneurysm with heterochronous thrombi arising from th

Postoperative increase in cerebral white matter fractional anisotropy on diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging is associated with cognitive improvement after uncomplicated carotid endarterectomy: tract-based spatial statistics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) might improve cognitive function. Fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the cerebral white matter derived from diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) correlate with cognitive function in patients with various central nervous system diseases. OBJECTIVE: To use tract-based spatial statistics to determine whether postoperative changes of FA values in the cerebral white matter derived from DTI are associated with cognitive improvement after uncomplicated CEA. METHODS: In 80 patients undergoing CEA for ipsilateral internal carotid artery stenosis

Performance discrepancies on the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) in children with traumatic brain injury.

One hundred sixty-seven children with traumatic brain injury (TBI), selected from an 8-year series of consecutive referrals to a Midwestern rehabilitation hospital, completed the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) within 1 year after injury. A large proactive interference (PI) effect, defined as performance on the second list that was at least 1.5 standard deviations below that on the 1st one, was statistically significantly more common in this clinical sample (21%) than in the CVLT-C standardiza

Phenotypic variation and FMRP levels in fragile X.

Data on the relationships between cognitive and physical phenotypes, and a deficit of fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene-specific protein product, FMRP, are presented and discussed in context with earlier findings. The previously unpublished results obtained, using standard procedures of regression and correlations, showed highly significant associations in males between FMRP levels and the Wechsler summary and subtest scores and in females between these levels and the full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ), verbal and performance IQ, and some Wechsler subtest scores. Executive Function Variation in Children With Conduct Problems: Influences of Coexisting Reading Difficulties.

It is unknown whether children with conduct problems (CP) and poor reading (PR) skills exhibit more profound executive function impairments than children with CP only and whether such impairments are explained by coexisting PR. Executive functions were compared in four groups of 7- to 8-year-old children: 26 CP only, 35 PR only, 27 CP-PR, and 31 comparison (COM) children with neither CP nor PR. The Conners' Teacher Rating Scale-28 and a sentence completion reading test were used to assess CP and PR skills. Cognitive reserve and memory in temporal lobe epilepsy and caregivers: a comparative pilot study.

This pilot study analysed differences in cognitive reserve and memory between patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and another chronically stressed population - caregivers of patients with epilepsy - and explored the relationships between these variables. In this cross-sectional study, 40 adults (20 patients with left TLE and 20 caregivers; mean age: 48.43 ± 8.86 years) underwent a neuropsychological assessment that examined cognitive reserve proxies (i.e. years of education, total intelligence quotient, and scores in the information subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) and

The Intellectual Profile of Adults with Specific Learning Disabilities.

Despite growing research on adults with specific learning disabilities (SLDs), evidence concerning their intellectual profile remains scarce. The present study examined the results of the administration of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition to 301 adults diagnosed with SLDs and compared them to the results obtained from previous studies with a large sample of children with SLDs. The results showed that: (1) as observed among children, adults with SLDs also presented higher scores in the subtests implying reasoning (associated with the General Ability Index, GAI) and lower sco

Neuroanatomical correlates of behavioral rating versus performance measures of working memory in typically developing children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The frequent lack of correspondence between performance and observational measures of executive functioning, including working memory, has raised questions about the validity of the observational measures. This study was conducted to investigate sources of this discrepancy through correlation of volumetric and cortical thickness (CT) neuroimaging values with performance and questionnaire measures of working memory (WM). METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development (Volumes, N= 347, 54.3% female; CT, N= 350, 54.6% female; age range: 6 to 16.9 y

A longitudinal study of the impact of marijuana on adult memory function: Prenatal, adolescent, and young adult exposures.

More Americans are using marijuana than in previous decades but there are concerns over its long-term impact on cognitive functioning, especially memory. The literature on marijuana use and cognitive functioning is mixed, with some studies showing recovery of functioning upon abstinence from the drug and others showing long-term effects that persist. The latter seems especially true for individuals who initiate marijuana at a younger age and engage in more chronic patterns of use. The goal of the current study is to use prospectively collected data on young adults from a prenatal cohort to det

Correlation of cytokines, BDNF levels, and memory function in patients with opioid use disorder undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) show memory deficiencies and impaired treatment outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that opioid abuse activates proinflammatory processes by increasing cytokine production and impairing neuroprotection, which damages the memory function in OUD patients. Therefore, we investigated whether plasma-based inflammatory and neurotrophic markers correlate with memory function in OUD patients. METHOD: OUD patients undergoing methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) were investigated and followed up for 12 weeks. Plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-re

Memory function in patients with opioid dependence treated with buprenorphine and methadone in comparison with healthy persons.

Methadone and buprenorphine are commonly used for drug abuse treatment but may impair cognitive function. This study assessed memory performance in patients receiving these treatments compared to healthy controls. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 93 buprenorphine- and 120 methadone-treated patients, compared with 120 healthy controls. The Wechsler Memory Scale was used, and scores were compared among the study groups using Kruskal-Wallis with Tukey's post-hoc test. Maintenance therapy duration was compared between case groups using an independent t-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Healthy

Story Memory Impairment Rates and Association with Hippocampal Volumes in a Memory Clinic Population.

OBJECTIVE: Story memory tasks are among the most commonly used memory tests; however, research suggests they may be less sensitive to memory decline and have a weaker association with hippocampal volumes than list learning tasks. To examine its utility, we compared story memory to other memory tests on impairment rates and association with hippocampal volumes. METHOD: Archival records from 1617 older adults (Mage = 74.41, range = 65-93) who completed the Wechsler Memory Scale - 4th edition (WMS-IV) Logical Memory (LM), Hopkins Verbal Learning Test - Revised (HVLT-R), and Brief Visuospatial Me
