Testing weight-based conditional discrimination in Goffin's cockatoos, Cacatua goffiniana.

Discrimination learning tasks are a method for investigating species' perception of and associative learning with a particular stimulus. Goffin's cockatoos previously required surprisingly few trials to differentiate objects based on weight alone in a simple discrimination task, outperforming primates in other weight discrimination setups. Nevertheless, it was unclear whether the difference in performance was largely based on ability or differences in experimental procedures. Therefore, we tested a group of Goffin's cockatoos on a weight-based conditional discrimination, like a task previously

The (Un)ideal Physicist: How Humans Rely on Object Interaction for Friction Estimates.

To estimate object properties such as mass or friction, our brain relies on visual information to efficiently compute approximations. The role of sensorimotor feedback, however, is not well understood. Here we tested healthy adults (N = 79) in an inclined-plane problem, that is, how much a plane can be tilted before an object starts to slide, and contrasted the interaction group with observation groups who accessed involved forces by watching objects being manipulated. We created objects of different masses and levels of friction and asked participants to estimate the critical tilt angle after

Compounding stigma: An experimental study comparing perceptions of an individual using Ozempic, bariatric surgery, or behavior modification.

Weight loss is a billion-dollar industry; methods of weight loss influence weight stigma and person perception. Prior research suggests individuals undergoing bariatric surgery face compounding prejudice from both their physical condition and the surgery itself. Bariatric surgery is often viewed as "taking the easy way out." Emerging evidence reveals similar sentiments regarding weight loss drugs. To date, no research has directly tested whether attitudes about a person differ if they underwent bariatric surgery compared to weight loss drugs. Thus, the present study empirically tests whether p

Adolescents and Their Parents: Perceptions of Addressing Obesity in the Inpatient Setting.

OBJECTIVES: Extending obesity screening to the inpatient setting may increase adolescent and parent awareness of weight status. Whether this should be a priority given limited resources depends on how interventions would be received by adolescents and their parents. In this study, we aimed to further understand the perception of adolescents and their parents to addressing obesity in the inpatient setting to inform how to better address this issue. METHODS: Pairs of hospitalized adolescents 13 to 18 years old on a general service and their parents were surveyed. The adolescent and parent surve

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging during Visual Perception Tasks in Adolescents Born Prematurely.

OBJECTIVES: Impairments in visual perception are among the most common developmental difficulties related to being born prematurely, and they are often accompanied by problems in other developmental domains. Neural activation in participants born prematurely and full-term during tasks that assess several areas of visual perception has not been studied. To better understand the neural substrates of the visual perceptual impairments, we compared behavioral performance and brain activations during visual perception tasks in adolescents born very preterm (birth weight ≤1500 g or gestational age <3

The role of body image and self-perception in anorexia nervosa: the neuroimaging perspective.

Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric illness characterized by intense fear of gaining weight, relentless pursuit of thinness, deep concerns about food and a pervasive disturbance of body image. Functional magnetic resonance imaging tries to shed light on the neurobiological underpinnings of anorexia nervosa. This review aims to evaluate the empirical neuroimaging literature about self-perception in anorexia nervosa. This narrative review summarizes a number of task-based and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies in anorexia nervosa about body image and self-perception

Association of Prediabetes Status Awareness With Behaviors and Perception of Health.

INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle modification can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes. However, the effect of prediabetes status awareness on perceptions of health and health behaviors are mixed. We used the 2015 to 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to evaluate the association of prediabetes status awareness with self-reported perception of health and health behaviors. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on the 2015 to 2016 NHANES, which is a biannual, cross-sectional survey designed to be representative of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U

MomBod: Exploring body-related perceptions and the influence of physical activity imagery among postpartum women.

Despite the known benefits of PA, many women do not engage in sufficient PA. This study explored postpartum women's perceptions of their body and PA and evaluated whether "realistic" PA imagery may influence perspectives around PA. We created imagery portraying safe, appropriate postpartum exercises and conducted an explanatory sequential mixed methods study. Given the influence of postpartum weight retention on body dissatisfaction we further explored experiences based on postpartum weight retention. Participants (n = 33, M = 31 years) <12 months postpartum completed a questionnaire, and n =

Providing lifestyle advice to women with PCOS: an overview of practical issues affecting success.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting up to 13 % of women. Lifestyle interventions are first-line treatments, however attrition in women with PCOS is high. This review summarises current evidence on barriers to lifestyle management in PCOS and suggested strategies for overcoming these challenges, mapped to the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation and Behaviour model.Physical capability for lifestyle changes may be impacted by altered gut hormone regulation and energy expenditure in PCOS. This may contribute to difficulties with weight management. The higher p

Motor imagery vividness does not predict the ability to judge object weight from observed hand actions.

Observing others' actions and imagining oneself performing the same actions (motor imagery) have been linked in the literature in several ways. They have been shown to have overlapping neural representations, both seem to relate to one's ability to move, and both have been shown to positively affect movement rehabilitation. Whether these overlaps reflect a direct functional relationship between motor imagery and the ability to derive relevant information from observed kinematics (action understanding) has not yet been investigated. A previous study found that individuals with low self-reported

Assessing the beliefs and impacts of strength training in a Division I collegiate gymnastics team.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, there has been a reluctance to use weight training with female gymnasts due to concerns that it could cause detrimental increases in muscle mass and impede flexibility. Recent literature has demonstrated that strength training has no significant effect on flexibility and can improve athletic performance. OBJECTIVE: To assess in a pilot study the perceptions of collegiate gymnasts and coaches toward strength training after starting inaugural strength and conditioning training. DESIGN: Survey-based study. SETTING: National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I

From pixels to perception: A benchmark for human-like symmetry detection.

Symmetry, a fundamental concept in nature, science and art, has challenged computer vision researchers because it occurs in various forms and human symmetry perception can deviate from the mathematical definition. Previous symmetry detection datasets are limited by the number of annotators and by missing the nuances of human perception. We introduce PIX2PER, a novel dataset for reflection symmetry in natural scenes and artworks. We also introduce WF1, a modified version of the widely-used F1 detection performance score, by adding weights to precision and recall to accommodate for the perceived

An Endomyocardial Biopsy of the Left Ventricle in an Anorexia Nervosa Patient with Sinus Bradycardia and Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of body weight. AN is a life-threatening condition that significantly increases the risk of death due to cardiac complications, such that at least one-third of all deaths in patients with AN are associated with cardiac causes including sudden death. In many reports, sudden death has been linked to reduced left ventricular function, structural changes, and QT abnormalities. However, the mechanistic details connecting AN to cardiac abnormalitie

Persisting perceptual abnormalities in psychedelic users are associated with conditioned hallucinations and impaired sensory processing.

Serotonergic psychedelics (SP) are increasingly used in clinical research and naturalistic settings, but their psychotic-like side effects, including persisting perceptual abnormalities (PPAs), are poorly understood. Psychosis-associated hallucinations are associated with susceptibility to conditioned hallucinations and computationally-estimated overweighting of perceptual expectations, or priors. However, SPs are widely argued to reduce prior weighting. We surveyed 186 naturalistic SP users on prior SP use, SP-associated PPA history, and current PPAs. Participants completed the visual conditi
