Characteristics of Collagen Changes in Small Intestine Anastomoses Induced by High-Frequency Electric Field Welding.

High-frequency electric field welding-induced tissue fusion has been explored as an advanced surgical method for intestinal anastomoses; however, intrinsic mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate microcosmic changes of collagen within the fusion area, with various parameters. Ex vivo small intestine was fused with mucosa-mucosa. Four levels of compressive pressure (100 kPa, 150 kPa, 200 kPa, 250 kPa) were applied for 10 s in order to fuse the colons under a power level of 140 W. Then, collagen fibers of the fusion area were examined by fibrillar collagen alignment a

Pulmonary toxicity and extrapulmonary tissue distribution of metals after repeated exposure to different welding fumes.

Welders are exposed to fumes with different metal profiles. The goals of this study were to compare lung responses in rats after treatment with chemically different welding fumes and to examine the extrapulmonary fate of metals after deposition in the lungs. Rats were treated by intratracheal instillation (0.5 mg/rat, once a week for 7 weeks) with gas metal arc-mild steel (GMAW-MS) or manual metal arc-hardsurfacing (MMAW-HS) welding fumes. Controls were treated with saline. At 1, 4, 35, and 105 days after the last treatment, lung injury and inflammation were measured, and elemental analysis of

Suppression in lung defense responses after bacterial infection in rats pretreated with different welding fumes.

Epidemiology suggests that inhalation of welding fumes increases the susceptibility to lung infection. The effects of chemically distinct welding fumes on lung defense responses after bacterial infection were compared. Fume was collected during gas metal arc (GMA) or flux-covered manual metal arc (MMA) welding using two consumable electrodes: stainless steel (SS) or mild steel (MS). The fumes were separated into water-soluble and -insoluble fractions. The GMA-SS and GMA-MS fumes were found to be relatively insoluble, whereas the MMA-SS was highly water soluble, with the soluble fraction compri

Numerical simulations to determine the most appropriate welding and ventilation conditions in small enclosed workspace.

In order to improve arc welding work in a small enclosed workspace, numerical simulations were conducted to find the most appropriate welding and ventilation conditions, such as welding currents, hood position and flow rates with no blowhole formation. In the simulations, distributions of airflow vectors and fume concentrations were calculated for two hood opening positions: one faced a welder's breathing zone, the other a contaminant source. As a result it was predicted that a hood opening facing a breathing zone remarkably lowered the fume concentration in the breathing zone compared with th

Methods for determining soluble and insoluble Cr III and Cr VI compounds in welding fumes.

An analytical procedure for simultaneous determination of soluble and insoluble Cr III and Cr VI compounds in welding fumes has been proposed. In the welding fume samples collected on a membrane filter, total chromium was determined with atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Glass filters with collected samples were divided into two parts. In one part of the sample, soluble and insoluble chromium was determined by means of AAS. The separation of soluble chromium III and VI was carried out on diphenylcarbazide resin. In the second part of the sample total chromium VI was determined by mean

Kinetics of the metal components of intratracheally instilled stainless steel welding fume suspensions in rats.

The kinetics of iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt from manual metal arc and metal inert gas stainless steel welding fumes were studied. Neutron activated welding fumes, in aqueous suspensions, were instilled intratracheally into rats. The follow up continued for up to 106 days. From both fumes, approximately 10% of the injection bolus was immediately lost into the gastrointestinal tract, to be recovered in the faeces within three days. Thereafter, a pronounced difference was seen in the kinetics of the two types of fumes. After the first day, chromium, nickel, and iron were lost from the lung

Dissolution of stainless steel welding fumes in the rat lung: an x ray microanalytical study.

The dissolution of stainless steel welding fumes produced by manual metal arc (MMA) and metal inert gas (MIG) techniques was studied by transmission electron microscopy and quantitative x ray microanalysis in the lungs of rats after inhalation exposure. Rats exposed to stainless steel fumes generated by MMA were found to have two particle populations of different behaviour in their lung tissue. The particles of the principal population (size 100-250 nm) dissolved in both alveolar macrophages and type 1 epithelial cells in about two months. Fast and slowly dissolving components of chromium, man

Investigation of joint formation in aluminum wire and nickel-coated copper terminals using ultrasonic welding.

The presence of intermetallic compounds (IMC) can significantly degrade the mechanical properties of joints, leading to premature failure. This paper presents a detailed investigation into the mechanical manufacturing and forming quality of ultrasonically welded joints between aluminum wire, copper terminals and nickel-coated copper terminals. The electroplated nickel coating enhances the corrosion resistance and operating temperature tolerance of copper substrate. The changes in failure load and energy absorption of welded joints were analyzed by examining the force-displacement curves. Micro

Arachnoid Welding-A Simple and Economical Method of Arachnoid Closure to Prevent Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak.

BACKGROUND: Collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the subdural compartment is a major cause of postoperative morbidity, especially for posterior fossa surgeries. Arachnoid closure techniques, including suturing of the arachnoid and use of synthetic sealants, have been described in the literature. However, they are not always feasible or effective and have not been universally adopted. METHODS: We describe the technique of arachnoid welding for a case of brainstem cavernoma. This is a simple, cost-effective, and easily reproducible technique using readily available bipolar cautery kept at

Solvent Welding-Based Methods Gently and Effectively Enhance the Conductivity of a Silver Nanowire Network.

To enhance the conductivity of a silver nanowire (Ag NW) network, a facile solvent welding method was developed. Soaking a Ag NW network in ethylene glycol (EG) or alcohol for less than 15 min decreased the resistance about 70%. Further combined solvent processing via a plasmonic welding approach decreased the resistance about 85%. This was achieved by simply exposing the EG-soaked Ag NW network to a low-power blue light (60 mW/cm2). Research results suggest that poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) dissolution by solvent brings nanowires into closer contact, and this reduced gap distance between nano

Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Electrospun Nanofiber Mats through Controllable Welding at the Cross Points.

This communication describes a simple and effective method for welding electrospun nanofibers at the cross points to enhance the mechanical properties of their nonwoven mats. The welding is achieved by placing a nonwoven mat of the nanofibers in a capped vial with the vapor of a proper solvent. For polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers, the solvent is dichloromethane (DCM). The welding can be managed in a controllable fashion by simply varying the partial pressure of DCM and/or the exposure time. Relative to the pristine nanofiber mat, the mechanical strength of the welded PCL nanofiber mat can be

The humoral immune response of mice exposed to manual metal arc stainless steel-welding fumes.

Arc welding is one of the most common forms of welding and includes the use of stainless steel electrodes that emit fumes containing chromium and nickel. Epidemological studies suggest a correlation between arc welding and adverse respiratory health effects. Studies evaluating the immunotoxic effects of welding fumes are limited due to the large number of variables associated with welding. This work investigates the immunotoxic effects of welding fumes by analyzing the in vivo and in vitro IgM response to a T-dependent antigen after welding fume exposure. Significant decreases in the total IgM

Validating the use of rectus muscle fragment welding to control presacral bleeding during rectal mobilization.

The incidence of presacral bleeding during rectal mobilization is low, but such bleeding may be massive and even fatal. Haemostasis can be difficult to achieve using conventional methods because of the complex interlacing of the venous network at the sacral periosteum. Historically, pelvic packing and metallic thumbtacks have been the more commonly used methods in our institution. However, the need for repeat surgery to remove the packs and the difficulties encountered in tack application have forced us to explore other methods. In 1994, the procedure termed muscle fragment welding, which uses

Hypospadias repair using laser welding of ventral skin flap in rabbits: comparison with sutured repair.

We tested the feasibility of laser welding in hypospadias repair. A total of 30 New Zealand white rabbits (2 groups of 15) underwent creation of distal hypospadias. In the control group ventrally placed skin flaps were created and sutured to the urethra. In the experimental group the ventrally placed skin flaps were welded to the urethra using a continuous wave diode laser (808 plus or minus 1 nm., 6.25 watts per cm.2). The welded anastomoses were strengthened by applying a solder of fibrinogen combined with a laser energy-absorbing dye. No stents were left indwelling. Operative time using las
