Abundance of Fe/Al Oxides Governs Soil Organic Carbon Stability in Wetlands Under Drying Conditions.

Drying of soil accelerates the decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC) in wetlands, which threatens their function as carbon sinks. However, whether soil mineral protection can mitigate the response of wetland SOC decomposition to drying remains unclear. In this study, using incubation experiments on 37 wetland soils sampling sites across China, we elucidate the role of mineral protection, as represented by iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) oxides, in regulating the magnitude of wetland SOC decomposition responses to drying across a large geographical scale. The results indicate that, compared w

Global Response and Mechanism of Methane Cycling in Wetlands Under Elevated Atmospheric CO2 and Warming.

Wetland is one of the most significant sources of methane (CH4). Although global warming and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) are expected to affect the CH4 cycle, the response of CH4 emission in natural wetland and paddy has been observed to be inconsistent. This variation is likely due to the complex interactions among soil, plant, and microbial processes that regulate CH4 dynamics, leaving the underlying mechanisms across global studies unknown. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to elucidate the effects of warming, eCO2, and their co-effects on CH4 cycling in wetla

Remediation of sulfonamide antibiotic-containing wastewater by constructed wetlands: Importance and action mechanism of plants.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been proved to be effective in treating sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) wastewater. Nevertheless, as an essential element in CWs, the significance of plants, continues to be a topic of controversy. In this study, CWs with two different plant species were taken as the research object to investigate their treatment performance, in order to understand the impact of plants on the treatment of SAs wastewater in CWs and to discover the underlying action mechanisms. Experiment results showed that plants played an important role in the CWs, and significantly improved the

Enhancing manganese redox-driven nitrogen removal by integrating manganese ore with microelectrolysis into constructed wetlands.

Microelectrolysis-integrated constructed wetlands (e-CWs) typically exhibit limited total phosphorus (TP) removal performance, while manganese ore-amended CWs (MOCWs) encounter challenges associated with the interplay between Mn redox cycling and nitrogen transformation. To overcome these limitations, this study introduced MO around the cathode or anode regions in e-CWs, designated as e-CMOCW and e-AMOCW, respectively. Results demonstrated that manganese oxides accelerated NH4+-N removal. Additionally, microelectrolysis enhanced the reductive dissolution of MO, increasing Mn2+ production. This

Management strategies to reduce microbial mercury methylation in constructed wetlands: Potential routes and future challenges.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely recognized as the potential hotspots for producing highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). This presents an obstacle to the widespread application of CWs. A comprehensive discussion on strategies to control mercury methylation in CWs is currently lacking. This review highlighted the potential impacts of differences in oxygen supply and consumption in various CWs, the characteristics of influent quality, the interactions between different substrates and mercury (including mercury adsorption, reduction), and plants on microbial mercury methylation in CWs. We also

A comprehensive sulfate and DOM framework to assess methylmercury formation and risk in subtropical wetlands.

Wetlands play a vital role in contaminant cycling and uptake. Understanding how sulfate (SO42‒) influences the conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) to toxic methylmercury (MeHg) is critical for predicting wetland responses to land use and climate change. Here, we sampled surface and pore waters across SO42‒ gradients in three freshwater Everglades wetlands to assess linkages between SO42‒, MeHg, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and inorganic sulfide (S(‒II)). Increasing SO42‒ concentrations increase S(‒II) and DOM concentrations and DOM aromaticity. MeHg concentration show a unimodal respon

Metagenomics Insight into Veterinary and Zoonotic Pathogens Identified in Urban Wetlands of Los Lagos, Chile.

Wetlands are ecosystems that are essential to ecological balance and biodiversity; nevertheless, human activity is a constant threat to them. Excess nutrients are caused by intensive livestock and agricultural operations, pollution, and population growth, which in turn leads to uncontrolled microbiological development. This impairment in water quality can constitute a risk to animal, human, and environmental health. To thoroughly characterize the microbial communities, shotgun metagenomics was used to characterize the taxonomic and functional pattern of microorganisms that inhabit urban wetlan

Floating photovoltaic systems homogenize the waterbird communities across subsidence wetlands in the North China Plain.

Photovoltaic (PV) power generation provides an environmental-friendly alternative to fossil fuels, but the potential impacts of large-scale PV systems on wildlife have become a hotspot. In the North China Plain, floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems have been extensively installed across subsidence wetlands created by underground coal mining. However, there have been no studies investigating the effects of FPV systems on waterbird communities. During the wintering and migrating seasons of 2016-2017 and 2021-2022, we carried out waterbird surveys in subsidence wetlands with and without FPV system

Coastal aquaculture regulates phosphorus cycling in estuarine wetlands: Mobilization, kinetic resupply, and source-sink process.

Estuarine mangrove wetlands have gradually declined owing to the growing construction of aquaculture ponds. How the speciation, transition, and migration of phosphorus (P) adaptively change in the sediments of this pond-wetland ecosystem remains unclear. In this study, we used high-resolution devices to explore the contrasting P behaviors associated with the redox cycles of Fe-Mn-S-As in estuarine and pond sediments. The results showed that the construction of aquaculture ponds increased the content or percentage of the silt, organic carbon, and P fractions in sediments. Dissolved organic P (D

Host species and environment drivers of ectoparasite community of rodents in a Mojave Desert wetlands.

Drivers of patterns of ectoparasitism in rodents in patchy Mojave Desert wetlands were investigated. A total of 1,571 ectoparasites in Mesostigmata, Trombidiformes, Siphonaptera and Ixodida were collected from 341 rodents (Microtus californicus scirpensis, Mus musculus, Reithrodontomys megalotis, Peromyscus eremicus, and Neotoma lepida) at eleven marshes. Trombiculids accounted for 82.5% of mites, followed by the mesostigmatid Ornithonyssus bacoti (17.5%), with chiggers predominating on voles and harvest mice. There were at least three genera of chiggers (Eutrombicula alfreddugesi, Euschoengas

Analysing how plants in coastal wetlands respond to varying tidal regimes throughout their life cycles.

Important to conserve plant species in coastal wetlands throughout their life cycle. All life stages in these habitats are exposed to varying tidal cycles. It is necessary to investigate all life stages as to how they respond to varying tidal regimes. We examine three wetlands containing populations of an endangered halophyte species, each subjected to different tidal regimes: (1). wetlands completely closed to tidal cycles; (2). wetlands directly exposed to tidal cycles (3). wetlands exposed to a partially closed tidal regime. Our results showed that the most threatened stage varied between w

Dairy farm wastewater treatment using horizontal subsurface flow wetlands with Typha domingensis and different substrates.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of different substrates in the performance of a horizontal flow constructed wetland employed in dairy farm wastewater treatment. Typha domingensis was chosen for this study due to its high productivity and efficiency in nutrient removal. Fifteen microcosm-scale reactors simulating horizontal flow constructed wetlands were disposed in a greenhouse in triplicate. Five substrates (river gravel, gravel, LECA, river gravel + zeolite and gravel + zeolite) were evaluated. Real effluent with previous treatment was used. Dairy farm effluents favoured T

Performance of vertical up-flow constructed wetlands on swine wastewater containing tetracyclines and tet genes.

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pollution in animal feeding farms received more public attention recently. Livestock wastewater contains large quantities of antibiotics and ARGs even after traditional lagoon treatment. In this study, the performance of vertical up-flow constructed wetlands (VUF-CWs) on swine wastewater containing tetracycline compounds (TCs) and tet genes was evaluated based on three aspects, TCs and tet genes removal efficiencies, residual TCs and tet genes in soils and plants, and the effect of TCs accumulation on nutrients removal and tet genes developmen

Interannual Variability in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Challenges Post-Restoration Net Sink Predictions in California Delta Wetlands.

Globally, wetlands can sequester and store large amounts of soil carbon over the long term due to high primary productivity and slow decomposition. Yet centuries of drainage for agriculture and development have turned many of these carbon sinks into greenhouse gas (GHG) sources. Restoring degraded wetlands, particularly in peat-rich landscapes, is increasingly promoted as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation. However, the trajectory and timing of recovery remain uncertain, especially given the complex interplay among vegetation dynamics, hydrology, and GHG fluxes. In this stud

Enhancing neonicotinoid removal in recirculating constructed wetlands: The impact of Fe/Mn biochar and microbial interactions.

Neonicotinoids pose significant environmental risks due to their widespread use, persistence, and challenges in elimination. This study explores the effectiveness of Fe/Mn biochar in enhancing the removal efficiency of neonicotinoids in recirculating constructed wetlands (RCWs). Results demonstrated that incorporating Fe/Mn biochar into RCWs significantly improved the removal of COD, NH4+-N, TN, TP, imidacloprid (IMI), and acetamiprid (ACE). However, the simultaneous presence of IMI and ACE in the RCWs hindered the elimination of NH4+-N, TN, and TP from wastewater. The enhanced removal of nutr

Total mercury, methylmercury, and their possible controlling factors in soils of typical coastal wetlands in China.

Coastal wetland soils play a critical role in the global mercury (Hg) cycle, serving as both an important repository for total mercury (THg) and a hotspot for methylmercury (MeHg) production. This study investigated Hg pollution in soils dominated by Phragmites australis (PA) and Spartina alterniflora (SA) across five representative China's coastal wetlands (Yellow River (YR), Linhong River (LHR), Yangtze River (CJR), Min River (MR), and Nanliu River (NLR)). The THg concentrations ranged from 16.7 to 446.0 (96.3 ± 59.3 ng g-1, dw), while MeHg concentrations varied from 0.01 to 0.81 (0.12 ± 0.1

Subsurface constructed wetlands with modified biochar added for advanced treatment of tailwater: Performance and microbial communities.

The limitations of conventional substrates in treating wastewater treatment plant tailwater are evident in subsurface flow constructed wetlands, and the emergence of biochar presents a solution to this problem. The objective of this study was to assess and prioritize the efficacy of various modified reed biochar in removing pollutants when used as fillers in wetland systems. To achieve this, we established multiple simulation systems of vertical groundwater flow wetlands, each filled with different modified reed biochar. The reed biochar was prepared and modified using Pingluo reed poles from
