The Impact of Heat Exposure and Sleep Restriction on Firefighters' Work Performance and Physiology during Simulated Wildfire Suppression.

This study was designed to examine the effects of ambient heat on firefighters' physical task performance, and physiological and perceptual responses when sleep restricted during simulated wildfire conditions. Thirty firefighters were randomly allocated to the sleep restricted (n = 17, SR; 19 °C, 4-h sleep opportunity) or hot and sleep restricted (n = 13, HOT + SR; 33 °C, 4-h sleep opportunity) condition. Firefighters performed two days of simulated, intermittent, self-paced work circuits comprising six firefighting tasks. Heart rate, and core temperature were measured continuously. After each

Fatigue in Emergency Services Operations: Assessment of the Optimal Objective and Subjective Measures Using a Simulated Wildfire Deployment.

Under controlled laboratory conditions, neurobehavioral assays such as the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) are sensitive to increasing levels of fatigue, and in general, tend to correlate with subjective ratings. However, laboratory studies specifically curtail physical activity, potentially limiting the applicability of such findings to field settings that involve physical work. In addition, laboratory studies typically involve healthy young male participants that are not always representative of a typical working population. In order to determine whether these findings extend to field-like

Combined exposure to wildfire ash and road salts reshapes skin and gut microbiota and reduces fitness in amphibians.

Rising wildfire risk and continued winter road maintenance increase the potential for wildfire ash and road salts to enter cold-region amphibian breeding habitats via rainfall or snowmelt runoff, yet their combined effects on skin and gut microbiota remain unclear. Rana dybowskii tadpoles were exposed for 28 days to control (C), low-temperature road salt (D), eco-friendly road salt (H), aqueous extract of wildfire ash (T), T + D (TD), and T + H (TH). Skin and gut microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that exposure reduced body mass, developmental proportio

Enhancing post-wildfire soil recovery in northern Arizona using biochar from waste forest biomass.

Increasing wildfire severity in the southwestern United States degrades the soil and hinders forest recovery in these ecosystems. The current study evaluates the efficacy of biochar produced from local ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson: var. arizonica (Engelm.) Shaw) slash using a mobile CharBoss® system for post-wildfire soil restoration. We installed 3 replicates of 3 treatments: (1) Biochar applied and mixed in the soil at 10 t ha-1 (BC10), (2) biochar applied at 20 t ha-1 (BC20), and (3) a wildfire-burned control (negative control (NC)) to soils burned in the 2022 Pipeline

Mechanistic drivers of PM2.5 emissions and water-soluble organic compounds and spectral characteristics from wildfire combustion.

Wildfire emissions of PM2.5, including its water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) fraction, pose a significant threat to the global environment and human health. However, the dynamic correlations among the fire environment, fire behavior, as well as the fluorescence components and spectral characteristics of WSOC remain unclear. In this study, a total of 144 indoor simulated combustion experiments and subsequent indoor tests were carried out by setting different fuel loads, fuel moisture contents, and slopes. The results indicated that both the fire environment and fire behavior had a signific

Prenatal wildfire smoke exposure and adverse neonatal outcomes in a high-risk cohort of pregnant women with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is contributing to more frequent wildfires. Exposure to wildfire smoke during pregnancy increases the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. Pregnant women with asthma and their newborns are particularly at risk of negative effects from wildfire smoke exposure and remain understudied. Determining critical windows of exposure during pregnancy could help inform mitigation strategies for this high-risk group. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the association of prenatal wildfire smoke exposure with adverse neonatal outcomes in mothers with asthma and to determine which

De-energization as maladaptation: Uneven residential exposure to wildfire Public Safety Power Shutoffs and compound heat.

In response to growing levels of wildfire destruction, electric utility companies are adopting powerline de-energization as an adaptation strategy intended to prevent wildfire ignitions. While reducing wildfire risk, planned de-energizations also expose residents to electricity loss, potentially causing harmful consequences. We investigated the extent to which planned de-energization can be considered a form of maladaptation, in which an adaptive response to a climate-related hazard results in unintended, concurrent harms. To do so, we examined the co-occurrence of Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Wildfire smoke exposure and emergency department visits for headache: A case-crossover analysis in California, 2006-2020.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of short-term exposure to overall fine particulate matter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5 ) and wildfire-specific PM2.5 with emergency department (ED) visits for headache. BACKGROUND: Studies have reported associations between PM2.5 exposure and headache risk. As climate change drives longer and more intense wildfire seasons, wildfire PM2.5 may contribute to more frequent headaches. METHODS: Our study included adult Californian members (aged ≥18 years) of a large de-identified commercial and Medicare Advantage claims database from 2006 to 2020. We identified ED visit

Contrasting the efficiency of landscape versus community protection fuel treatment strategies to reduce wildfire exposure and risk.

We examined the financial efficiency and effectiveness of landscape versus community protection fuel treatments to reduce structure exposure and loss to wildfire on a large fire-prone area of central Idaho (USA). The study area contained 63,707 structures distributed in 20 rural communities and resorts, encompassing 13,804 km2. We used simulation modeling to estimate expected structure loss based on burn probability and characteristics of the home ignition zone. We then designed three fuel management strategies that targeted treatments to: 1) the surrounding areas predicted to be the source of

Hazardous Air Pollutants in Fresh and Aged Western US Wildfire Smoke and Implications for Long-Term Exposure.

Wildfires have a significant adverse impact on air quality in the United States (US). To understand the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke, many epidemiology studies rely on concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM) as a smoke tracer. However, there are many gas-phase hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that are also present in wildfire smoke plumes. Using observations from the Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption, and Nitrogen (WE-CAN), a 2018 aircraft-based field campaign that measured HAPs and PM

Carriage of antibiotic resistance genes to treatments for chlamydial disease in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus): A comparison of occurrence before and during catastrophic wildfires.

Growing reports of diverse antibiotic resistance genes in wildlife species around the world symbolises the extent of this global One Health issue. The health of wildlife is threatened by antimicrobial resistance in situations where wildlife species develop disease and require antibiotics. Chlamydial disease is a key threat for koalas in Australia, with infected koalas frequently entering wildlife hospitals and requiring antibiotic therapy, typically with chloramphenicol or doxycycline. This study investigated the occurrence and diversity of target chloramphenicol and doxycycline resistance gen

Associations between classroom ventilation rates and school characteristics with indoor air in classrooms during wildfire smoke events.

In this study, we were interested in understanding what school-level factors influence infiltration of wildfire smoke into schools. This is important given that wildfire smoke is increasingly affecting western North America and has been found to affect children's respiratory health. We first determined air change rates, measured in air changes per hour (ACH), in 17 schools under four ventilation scenarios using controlled release carbon-dioxide (CO2) decay testing. We also investigated to what extent school-level characteristics and air change rates under the four ventilation scenarios influen

Assessing the Evidence for Differential Health Effects of Wildfire Smoke Across Fires and Populations: A Critical Review of Recent Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the recent literature on differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire smoke across subpopulations, whether wildfire-derived PM2.5 affects health differently from non-wildfire-derived PM2.5, and how wildfire smoke composition affects health. RECENT FINDINGS: We found inconsistent evidence of differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire PM2.5 by population subgroups. This could be due to variation in wildfire PM2.5 infiltration into buildings and ability to take individual protective actions, both of which have been noted to be related to soc

The "Fixed period," the wildfire news, and an unpublished manuscript: Osler's farewell speech revisited in geographical breadth and emotional depth.

William Osler, the founding Chair of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins College of Medicine, left for Oxford in 1905. He delivered a valedictory lecture February 1905 at Johns Hopkins in which he referred to a novel by Anthony Trollope called The Fixed Period. Osler stated that almost all important work was done prior to the age of 40 and the retirement age should be 60, at least for professors. In jest, he said that perhaps men should be euthanized by chloroform at age 60, which he recalled as the plot of the novel. The so-called Fixed Period address created a media controversy with numerous artic

Sustained inflammation during human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 infection: a wildfire contributing to disease progression.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus affecting 10-20 million people worldwide. While many carriers remain asymptomatic, HTLV-1 infection can trigger intense inflammatory responses which are defined by the sustained release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Central to this process is the HTLV-1 encoded Tax oncoprotein, a viral regulator that drives uncontrolled inflammation by hijacking multiple cellular signaling pathways, such as the RelA/NF-κB signal transduction pathway. CD4 T-cells are the primary targets of Tax-mediated transformation, undergoing uncontro

Effect of wildfire on the prevalence of opioid misuse through anxiety among young adults in the United States: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to climate change events like wildfires can lead to health and mental health problems. While conceptual frameworks have been hypothesized describing the potential relationship between disaster exposure and substance use, the association remains under-researched and unquantified. METHODS: We constructed a quantitative portrayal of one proposed conceptual framework that focuses on the intermediary role of anxiety. We used the Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the impact of wildfire exposure on opioid misuse outcomes through increased anxiety. We searched for and extracted

Wildfire-sourced fine particulate matter and preterm birth risks in Brazil: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

Wildfire-specific particulate matter with diameters ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is the key component of wildfire smoke, with potentially higher toxicity than PM2.5 from other sources. In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we included 22,163,195 births from Brazil during 20102019. Daily wildfire-specific PM2.5 was estimated through the chemical transport model. Time-varying Cox proportional hazards models were used to characterize the exposure-time-response (E-T-R) relationship between weekly wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure and preterm birth (PTB) risks, followed by subgroup analyses. A 10 µg
