Argon laser therapy of port-wine stains: effects and limitations.

One hundred and one patients (112 parts) with port-wine stains were treated by argon laser therapy. We strictly evaluated all patients according to color shift, scar formation, and pigmentation. We observed good to excellent results in 44 percent of patients, and less satisfactory results in 56 percent. The relationship between the effects of treatment and several factors, such as patients' age, anatomic site, and histologic type of the lesions, were investigated. More satisfactory results tended to be obtained in patients with neck lesions and with histologic type III lesions (dilated type).

Biosensors of Wine Fermentation for Monitoring Chemical and Biochemical Interactions, Process Indicators and Migration of Compounds and Metabolites, Between Wine and Fermentation Vessels-A Critical Review.

Wine alcoholic fermentation occurs in a dynamic biochemical environment where interactions between the vessel and the product can cause inorganic and organic species to migrate into the fermenting must or wine. At low pH and with rising ethanol levels, fermentation tanks made of stainless steel, concrete or cementitious materials, ceramics, or polymers exhibit material-specific behaviors that may promote the release of toxic trace elements or alter technologically important ions. These changes can affect yeast physiology, fermentation kinetics, and matrix stability, directly impacting wine saf

The use of chitosan as alternative to bentonite for wine fining: Effects on heat-stability, proteins, organic acids, colour, and volatile compounds in an aromatic white wine.

This investigation focuses on the use of chitosan treatment simulating a bentonite fining in order to detect any modification of the wine haze potential by simultaneously evaluating the secondary effects on untargeted fixed and volatile compounds. A significant removal of chitinases was observed after fining an aromatic white wine with 1 g/L of a fungoid chitosan. Even if the more stable thaumatin like protein fractions were not significantly affected, the heat stability of the fined chitosan wine samples were highly improved in the 55-62 °C range. Among the secondary effects of a fining treat

Polyphenols content, phenolics profile and antioxidant activity of organic red wines produced without sulfur dioxide/sulfites addition in comparison to conventional red wines.

Wine exerts beneficial effects on human health when it is drunk with moderation. Nevertheless, wine may also contain components negatively affecting human health. Among these, sulfites may induce adverse effects after ingestion. We examined total polyphenols and flavonoids content, phenolics profile and antioxidant activity of eight organic red wines produced without sulfur dioxide/sulfites addition in comparison to those of eight conventional red wines. Polyphenols and flavonoids content were slightly higher in organic wines in respect to conventional wines, however differences did not reach

Impact of ethanol on odor detection thresholds relevant to No- and Low-Alcohol (NoLo) wines: a combined sensory and computational approach in simplified static hydroalcoholic model wine.

The effect of ethanol on odor detection thresholds (ODTs) in fully and partially dealcoholized (NoLo) wines remains largely unexplored. This study used a combined sensory and thermodynamic approach in simplified static hydroalcoholic wine model systems at 0, 6, and 12 % v/v ethanol with three aroma compounds. Orthonasal ODTs were measured using a 3-AFC ascending method. NRTL-based thermodynamic modeling was used to derive a volatility enhancement factor (VEF), defined as the volatility ratio between ethanol levels, and to estimate headspace concentrations at ODT. ODTs were significantly increa

Influence of Wine Label Imagery: Eye-Tracking Evidence and Regulatory Implications.

INTRODUCTION: The visual design of alcohol beverage packaging plays a crucial role in shaping consumer perceptions and purchase decisions, yet regulations in many countries are relatively lax. Guidelines often focus on the inclusion of health warnings rather than overall label or packaging design, giving producers considerable freedom. In recent years, wine manufacturers have increasingly featured images on their labels that are unrelated to the product, most notably animals such as mammals, birds and insects, a strategy likely intended to exploit attentional bias. The present study examines h

Multi-Solvent Suppression Ultrafast 2D COSY for High-Throughput Wine Screening.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful analytical tool for wine analysis to identify and quantify a metabolite composition. However, a limiting factor of 1D 1H NMR spectroscopy is the overlap of signals in complex mixtures. While conventional 2D NMR methods disperse the signals over two dimensions, they are associated with long experiment times. In the case of wine, interesting metabolites are also often masked by the large water and ethanol peaks. To improve wine analysis by NMR, a method that uses the advantages of 2D NMR while suppressing solvent signals and being within the timefra

Alcohol, Wine, and Sleep in Adults: Insights from a Narrative Review.

Alcohol is widely consumed across cultures and is often used to facilitate relaxation or sleep initiation. This narrative review critically examines evidence published over the past decade (2015-2025) on the effects of alcohol, including wine, on sleep health in community-dwelling adults. Priority was given to systematic reviews and meta-analyses, followed by high-quality observational and experimental studies. Across study designs, evidence consistently shows that although alcohol may reduce sleep onset latency, it disrupts sleep architecture, suppresses rapid eye movement sleep, increases sl

Profiling Potential Wine Yeast Starters from Criolla Grape Varieties from Argentina.

Criolla grape varieties are native South American cultivars that represent an important reservoir of genetic and microbiological diversity. This study aimed to investigate the oenological potential of Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeasts isolated from three criolla grape varieties in order to support the future design of wine starters. Yeasts were isolated at different fermentation stages from four vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina. A total of 485 isolates were recovered and molecularly identified, revealing 12 species belonging to eight genera. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Hanseniaspora guil

Port-wine stains: molecular drivers, translational models, and emerging theragnostic directions.

Port-wine stains (PWS), also termed capillary malformations, are congenital, progressive microvascular anomalies that can cause lifelong cosmetic and psychosocial burden and may signal syndromic involvement such as Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). We performed a focused evidence synthesis integrating mechanistic literature on somatic mosaicism and vascular remodeling with clinical evidence from randomized trials, observational cohorts, and quantitative-imaging studies. Key endpoints and theragnostic concepts were summarized to inform trial design and individualized treatment strategies. Somatic ac

Wine chemistry and language bottleneck hypothesis: insights from large language models.

Despite the development of novel tools for automatic food quality control, human taste perception is difficult to represent on computers in textual or conceptual space forms. Wine is a particularly interesting object of taste studies because of its elaborate terminology. We investigate taste perception at three different levels: the chemical composition of wine (∼100 parameters), the interaction of ligands with taste receptors (<10 parameters), and wine language terminology (∼25 axes). Wine terminology is studied via the analysis of binary oppositions. Given that wine terminology is often perc

Wine-red lignin revisited, dirigent proteins, and native lignin macromolecular configuration.

The wine-red coloration of xylem in antisense cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) down-regulated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) has long been reported as due to wine-red colored lignin. To investigate validity of the wine-red lignin report, both wild type (WT) and anti-sense CAD down-regulated tobacco stem xylem tissues were examined, with the red pigment found to be facilely removed by treatment with an 0.5 % HCl in MeOH solution at 4 °C. The red pigment in the xylem tissues was rapidly reconstituted in both pre-treated antisense CAD and WT xylem tissues by incubation with sinapyl aldehyde in M

Aging like fine wine: Mischievous microbes and other factors influencing senescence.

In this issue, a special section is dedicated to the factors affecting senescence. It examines the interplay between immunosenescence and chronic kidney disease, probes into Peto's paradox, and explores how epigenetic switches can potentially mitigate senescence and inflammation. Additionally, insights are offered on understanding a specific Ras mechanism in yeast for potential therapeutic interventions against cancer and for longevity. Furthermore, the remarkable endurance of last year's Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine is also highlighted. Moreover, the discovery of potential bio

Potential applications of pulsed electric field in the fermented wine industry.

Fermented wine refers to alcoholic beverages with complex flavor substances directly produced by raw materials (fruit or rice) through microbial fermentation (yeast and bacteria). Its production steps usually include saccharification, fermentation, filtration, sterilization, aging, etc., which is a complicated and time-consuming process. Pulsed electric field (PEF) is a promising non-thermal food processing technology. Researchers have made tremendous progress in the potential application of PEF in the fermented wine industry over the past few years. The objective of this paper is to systemati

A New Nonlinear Photothermal Iterative Theory for Port-Wine Stain Detection.

The development of appropriate photothermal detection of skin diseases to meet complex clinical demands is an urgent challenge for the prevention and therapy of skin cancer. An extensive body of literature has ignored all high-order harmonics above the second order and their influences on low-order harmonics. In this paper, a new iterative numerical method is developed for solving the nonlinear thermal diffusion equation to improve nonlinear photothermal detection for the noninvasive assessment of the thickness of port-wine stain (PWS). First, based on the anatomical and structural properties

Non-Saccharomyces in Wine: Effect Upon Oenococcus oeni and Malolactic Fermentation.

This work is a short review of the interactions between oenological yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB), especially Oenococcus oeni, the main species carrying out the malolactic fermentation (MLF). The emphasis has been placed on non-Saccharomyces effects due to their recent increased interest in winemaking. Those interactions are variable, ranging from inhibitory, to neutral and stimulatory and are mediated by some known compounds, which will be discussed. One phenomena responsible of inhibitory interactions is the media exhaustion by yeasts, and particularly a decrease in L-malic acid by s
