Trends in prenatal prescription opioid use among Medicaid beneficiaries in Wisconsin, 2010-2019.

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in prenatal opioid prescription exposure following new guidelines and policies. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study of all (262,284) Wisconsin Medicaid-insured live births 2010-2019. Prenatal exposures were classified as analgesic, short term, and chronic (90+ days), and medications used to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD). We describe overall and stratified temporal trends and used linear probability models with interaction terms to test their significance. RESULT: We found 42,437 (16.2%) infants with prenatal exposure; most (90.5%) reflected analgesic opioids. From 201

Socio-environmental risk factors for medically-attended agricultural injuries in Wisconsin dairy farmers.

BACKGROUND: Accidents are common in the agricultural industry, particularly among dairy farmers. How said farmers get hurt is well established, but far less is known about how distal, socio-environmental factors influence injuries. This study examined associations between medically-attended agricultural injuries and: (1) personal sociodemographic characteristics, and (2) farm environment features and general safety practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was implemented with linked data from electronic health records on prior agricultural injuries that occurred between 01/01/2002-12/31/2

Brucella abortus Strain 2308 Wisconsin Genome: Importance of the Definition of Reference Strains.

Brucellosis is a bacterial infectious disease affecting a wide range of mammals and a neglected zoonosis caused by species of the genetically homogenous genus Brucella. As in most studies on bacterial diseases, research in brucellosis is carried out by using reference strains as canonical models to understand the mechanisms underlying host pathogen interactions. We performed whole genome sequencing analysis of the reference strain B. abortus 2308 routinely used in our laboratory, including manual curated annotation accessible as an editable version through a link at https://en.wikipedia.org/wi

Attempted isolation of Blastomyces dermatitidis from the nares of dogs: Northern Wisconsin, USA.

The nasal cavities of domestic animals may concentrate and allow isolation of environmentally acquired fungal pathogens. We obtained two swabs each from the nares of 110 asymptomatic, physically normal dogs from a veterinary practice in Eagle River, WI, USA, an area highly endemic for blastomycosis. Four of the tested dogs had past histories of blastomycosis. Samples were placed on yeast extract phosphate (Smith's) media at 20 degrees C but growth of Blastomyces dermatitidis was not observed on any of the 220 cultures. One dog developed cytologically confirmed B. dermatitidis one month followi

Refining the tobacco dependence phenotype using the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives.

The construct of tobacco dependence is important from both scientific and public health perspectives, but it is poorly understood. The current research integrates person-centered analyses (e.g., latent profile analysis) and variable-centered analyses (e.g., exploratory factor analysis) to clarify the latent structure of nicotine dependence and to guide distillation of the phenotype. Using data from 4 samples of smokers, latent profiles were derived using the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives subscale scores. Across all 4 samples, results revealed a unique latent profile that ha

University of Wisconsin solution provides superior myocardial preservation compared with Stanford cardioplegic solution.

The efficacy of the University of Wisconsin solution to safely prolong preservation times for kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation is established, but its efficacy in enhancing myocardial preservation is not yet clear. We studied the effects of Stanford cardioplegic solution and the University of Wisconsin solution both in preserving the myocardium and in protecting it from the effects of reperfusion injury after 6 hours of preservation. In 28 rat hearts we measured changes in high-energy phosphate content (with magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and histologic changes (edema, endothelial

Selective screening for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in nonurban family planning clinics in Wisconsin.

To determine the prevalence of, and identify risk factors for, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, we studied 380 women attending four Wisconsin family planning clinics in October 1985. The patients completed self-administered sexual history questionnaires, were examined by nurse clinicians and had specimens taken for direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) testing for C. trachomatis. Of 335 women with adequate specimens, 10.7 percent had positive DFA tests. Selective screening criteria were developed based on the following risk factors for C. trachomatis: Age less than 20 years and recent exposure to

Demography and threats to population growth of Cirsium pitcheri, a threatened dune plant, in Wisconsin.

Multi-year and multi-site demographic data for rare plants allow researchers to observe threats and project population growth rates and thus long-term persistence of the species, generating knowledge, which allows for effective conservation planning. Demographic studies across more than a decade are extremely rare but allow for the effects of threats to be observed and assessed within the context of interannual environmental variation. We collected demographic data on the Threatened plant Cirsium pitcheri in two sites from 2011-2022. These sites were chosen because one exhibited the presence o

Immunizations at Wisconsin Pharmacies: Results of a statewide vaccine registry analysis and pharmacist survey.

BACKGROUND: There is currently limited data in the United States on the proportion of immunization doses given at pharmacies outside the influenza vaccine. This study aims to obtain baseline information on the percentage of vaccine doses administered at pharmacies in Wisconsin and to understand the immunization barriers for Wisconsin pharmacists, to inform interventions to increase immunization access at pharmacies. METHODS: Aggregated data from the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) was obtained for all vaccines administered at pharmacies to patients over the age of six from July 2017 thr

Surveillance Study of Influenza Occurrence and Immunity in a Wisconsin Cohort During the 2009 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Antibody and T-cell immunity to conserved influenza virus antigens can protect animals against infection with diverse influenza strains. Although immunity against conserved antigens occurs in humans, whether such responses provide cross-protection in humans and could be harnessed as the basis for universal influenza vaccines is controversial. The 2009 pandemic provided an opportunity to investigate whether pre-existing cross-reactive immunity affected susceptibility to infection. METHODS: In 2009, we banked sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from blood donors, then

Amyloid burden, cortical thickness, and cognitive function in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention.

There is a growing interest in understanding how amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in preclinical Alzheimer's disease relates to brain morphometric measures and cognition. Existing investigations in this area have been primarily conducted in older cognitively-normal (CN) individuals. Therefore, not much is known about the associations between Aβ burden, cortical thickness, and cognition in midlife. We examined this question in 109, CN, late-middle-aged adults (mean age=60.72±5.65 years) from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention. They underwent Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB) and anatomical

Effects of gender, alcohol, smoking, and dairy consumption on bone mass in Wisconsin adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Failure to attain peak bone mass during adolescence may be an important contributor to the development of osteoporosis. METHODS: This prospective, descriptive study evaluated the relationship between osteoporosis risk factors and attainment of bone mass in 239 Wisconsin high school students. Students completed an annual risk assessment questionnaire that included questions about dairy intake, alcohol use, and smoking. Heel bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in the 9th grade (year 1) and 12th grade (year 4). RESULTS: A total of 109 students were included in the final analys

The Wisconsin Pediatric Cardiac Registry: a mechanism for exploring etiologies of congenital heart defects.

On January 1, 2000, the Wisconsin Pediatric Cardiac Registry began registering families of infants born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) in Wisconsin. Pediatric cardiologists across the state developed the Registry as a database and as a research study exploring potential etiologies of CHDs. Participating pediatric cardiologists identify the infants and refer families to the Registry. Families are asked to participate by completing a comprehensive questionnaire that inquires into exposures and illnesses experienced during the 6 months prior to the pregnancy and during the pregnancy itself.

Lens opacities in women in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin: is there evidence of an effect of sex hormones?

Analyses reported here suggest a protective effect of estrogen status on lens opacities, which are very common in adult Americans. Clinical trials are currently underway to assess protective effects of past menopausal estrogens on other disease. Evaluation of lenses of the participants would shed light on effects in the lens.

Implementation of a Novel Dormant State to Address Denominator Inflation in the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.

CONTEXT: Denominator inflation (DI) can burden long-standing immunization information systems (IIS), evident through a system having more client records than population estimates. DI underestimates IIS vaccination coverages compared to National Immunization Surveys (NIS) data. To mitigate DI, the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) implemented a dormant indicator in June 2020. Clients are presumed to have left the jurisdiction and are placed in the dormant state if they meet the following criteria: client age is at least 11 years old, no updates to the client record in at least 10 years, and
