Neurocognitive impairment in patients with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence upon discharge from inpatient care.

The current study explored the neurocognitive functioning of patients with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence upon discharge from inpatient care. The study compared scores of neuropsychological tests among three groups of bipolar I inpatients without a history of neurological injury or illness: 1) patients meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence in the past 6 months (n=13), 2) patients diagnosed with alcohol dependence in full remission (n=9), and 3) patients without a history of a substance use disorder (SUD; n=41). Analyses indicated that patients with co-

The impact of subcortical stroke-related aphasia on executive functions and working memory.

Aphasia is a common post-stroke disorder characterized by impairments in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Although cognitive impairments have been well studied in cortical aphasia, deficits associated with subcortical aphasia remain to be elucidated. The current study aimed to assess executive functions (EF) and working memory (WM) in patients with subcortical aphasia, and investigate the relationship between language abilities and cognition deficits. Participants of this research included patients with thalamus lesions (n = 9; mean age = 53.89 years) and healthy individuals (n = 9;

The cooking therapy for cognitive rehabilitation of cerebellar damage: A case report and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: The therapeutic approach for cerebellar damages heavily relies on neurorehabilitation since there are no medications that may improve clinical symptoms mainly those related to cognitive dysfunctions. Nevertheless, neurorehabilitation programs tailored to cerebellar damages have never been validated. Here we describe a new rehabilitation approach based on cooking training (CT). The idea that cooking may stimulate cerebellar activity relies on previous evidence demonstrating the beneficial effect on the executive functions as well as in promoting neural plasticity with

The CACNA1C risk allele selectively impacts on executive function in bipolar type I disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Calcium channels are important for converting electrical activity into biochemical events. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs1006737) in the CACNA1C gene has been strongly associated with increased risk for Bipolar disorder (BD) in genome-wide association studies. Recently, this same SNP has been reported to influence executive function in schizophrenia and controls, but it remains unclear whether this SNP affects behaviour, especially cognition in subjects with BD. METHOD: A total of 109 BD type I subjects and 96 controls were genotyped for CACNA1C rs1006737 and assessed w

The impact of repeated manic episodes and executive dysfunction on work adjustment in bipolar disorder.

The aim of this study was to study the clinical and neurocognitive variables that best explain poor work adjustment in a sample of bipolar I euthymic patients. Eighty-five euthymic patients at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona were assessed for this study by means of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery and a work-focused interview to determine work adjustment. Clinical and sociodemographic variables were also collected. Direct logistic regression was performed to assess the impact of demographic, clinical and neuropsychological variables on the likelihood of presenting poor work adjustme

Extrapyramidalism in Alzheimer's disease: prevalence, psychiatric, and neuropsychological correlates.

The prevalence and clinical correlates of extrapyramidal signs in a consecutive series of 78 patients with Alzheimer's disease attending a neurology clinic, and 20 age comparable normal controls, were examined. Based on the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) findings, 18 patients (23%) met criteria for parkinsonism, 44 (56%) had isolated extrapyramidal signs, and 16 (21%) had no extrapyramidal signs. Whereas the control group showed a similar prevalence of isolated extrapyramidal signs (57%), none of them showed parkinsonism. No significant differences were found for age, sex, du

Performance of inattentive-overactive children on selected measures of prefrontal-type function.

Several theorists have suggested that childhood inattention-overactivity ("attention deficit disorder," "hyperactivity") may arise from a deficit in the inhibitory mechanisms of the prefrontal cortex. Accordingly, it was hypothesized that inattentive-overactive children would exhibit prefrontal-type deficits on several relevant neuropsychological measures. Subjects were 21 elementary school pupils who had been referred for disruptive behavior problems and who had been rated as high in inattention-overactivity. Controls were 26 age-matched normal children from the same school. It was found that

Altered Brain-Behavior Association During Resting State is a Potential Psychosis Risk Marker.

Alterations in cognitive and neuroimaging measures in psychosis may reflect altered brain-behavior interactions patterns accompanying the symptomatic manifestation of the disease. Using graph connectivity-based approaches, we tested the brain-behavior association between cognitive functioning and functional connectivity at different stages of psychosis. We collected resting-state fMRI of 204 neurotypical controls (NC) in two independent cohorts, 43 patients with chronic psychosis (PSY), and 22 subjects with subthreshold psychotic symptoms (STPS). In NC, we calculated graph connectivity metrics

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy is a sensitive marker of neurophysiological deficits on executive function tasks in young adults with a history of child abuse.

Previous research has shown the utility of imaging measures of neural activity in identifying deficits in cognitive functioning in individuals with a history of child abuse. The purpose of the present study was to measure differences that may exist between individuals who reported physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as children (n = 37) vs. those who did not (n = 47) using Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the completion of cognitive tasks of executive function. The results showed a significantly higher rate and number of errors of commission on the Conners CPT test in the

Differences in Frontal Lobe Dysfunction in Patients with Episodic and Chronic Migraine.

Neuroimaging and neuropsychological investigations have indicated that migraineurs exhibit frontal lobe-related cognitive impairment. We investigated whether orbitofrontal and dorsolateral functioning differed between individuals with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM), focusing on orbitofrontal dysfunction because it is implicated in migraine chronification and medication overuse headache (MOH) in migraineurs. This cross-sectional study recruited women with CM with/without MOH (CM + MOH, CM - MOH), EM, and control participants who were matched in terms of age and education. We c

Long-term cognitive sequelae: abused children without PTSD.

Many lines of research suggest that childhood abuse and neglect are associated with later developing psychiatric diagnoses, academic problems, cognitive difficulty, and possible brain changes as measured through brain imaging. Data were collected on children (N = 41) who completed a neuropsychological evaluation. Of those evaluated, 18 had a documented history of physical and/or emotional abuse or significant neglect and 23 had no history of abuse/neglect. When controlling for Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), the abused children had significantly lower scores on measures of executive functioning (Wiscons

Reduction of caudate nucleus volumes in neuroleptic-naïve female subjects with schizotypal personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The caudate nucleus might contribute to the psychopathological and cognitive deficits observed in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Here we focused on female patients, because this group is underrepresented in studies of SPD and schizophrenia, and we might learn more about the caudate and clinical and cognitive impairments that are unique to female patients diagnosed with SPD. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging scans, obtained on a 1.5-T magnet with 1.5-mm contiguous slices, were used to measure the caudate in 32 neuroleptic-naïve women wi
