The present situation of echinococcoses in Mongolia.

This review presents the historical and current situation of echinococcoses in Mongolia. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Mongolia's health surveillance infrastructure has been very poor, especially as it pertains to chronic diseases, including neglected zoonotic diseases (NZDs). Although there is anecdotal evidence of people dying from hepatic disease due to infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus spp., there are very few published reports. All confirmed cases of echinococcoses in Mongolia are from hospitals located in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Cases of cystic ec

Host-Specific Circulation and Molecular Diversity of Babesia, Hepatozoon and Bartonella Species Among Wild Carnivores in Northwestern Italy.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a concern for animal and public health, and wildlife surveillance is valuable for their monitoring. The occurrence, molecular diversity and host distribution of tick-borne protozoa (TBP: Babesia spp., Theileria spp. and Hepatozoon spp.) and Bartonella spp. were investigated in wild carnivores from three regions of northwestern Italy. Spleen samples from 690 wild carnivores were screened for TBP and/or Bartonella spp. by PCR followed by sequencing. Among the 503 carnivores screened for TBP, 197 animals (39.2%) tested positive for at least one targeted prot

Population expansion and individual age affect endoparasite richness and diversity in a recolonising large carnivore population.

The recent recolonisation of the Central European lowland (CEL) by the grey wolf (Canis lupus) provides an excellent opportunity to study the effect of founder events on endoparasite diversity. Which role do prey and predator populations play in the re-establishment of endoparasite life cycles? Which intrinsic and extrinsic factors control individual endoparasite diversity in an expanding host population? In 53 individually known CEL wolves sampled in Germany, we revealed a community of four cestode, eight nematode, one trematode and 12 potential Sarcocystis species through molecular genetic t

Investigating the Function of Play Bows in Dog and Wolf Puppies (Canis lupus familiaris, Canis lupus occidentalis).

Animals utilize behavioral signals across a range of different contexts in order to communicate with others and produce probable behavioral outcomes. During play animals frequently adopt action patterns used in other contexts. Researchers have therefore hypothesized that play signals have evolved to clarify communicative intent. One highly stereotyped play signal is the canid play bow, but its function remains contested. In order to clarify how canid puppies use play bows, we used data on play bows in immature wolves (ages 2.7-7.8 months) and dogs (ages 2 to 5 months) to test hypotheses evalua

Naturally Acquired Infectious Canine Hepatitis in Two Captive Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) Puppies.

We report the clinicopathological manifestations of canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV 1) infection in captive-born naturally infected maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Two 3-month-old maned wolves presented with lethargy, emesis, dehydration, pallor, hypothermia, leucocytosis, neutrophilia, lymphopaenia and thrombocytopaenia. One of the puppies died shortly after admission, with gross changes that included marked gastrointestinal petechiae, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and pulmonary haemorrhage. Histologically, large eosinophilic intranuclear body inclusions were found in the liver and kidneys.

Helminth parasites in the endangered Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis.

Ethiopian wolves, Canis simensis, are an endangered carnivore endemic to the Ethiopian highlands. Although previous studies have focused on aspects of Ethiopian wolf biology, including diet, territoriality, reproduction and infectious diseases such as rabies, little is known of their helminth parasites. In the current study, faecal samples were collected from 94 wild Ethiopian wolves in the Bale Mountains of southern Ethiopia, between August 2008 and February 2010, and were screened for the presence of helminth eggs using a semi-quantitative volumetric dilution method with microscopy. We found

Patterns of fecal gonadal hormone metabolites in the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus).

Ex situ populations of maned wolves are not viable due to low reproductive efficiency. The objective of this study was to increase knowledge regarding the reproductive physiology of maned wolves to improve captive management. Fecal samples were collected 3-5 d/wk from 12 females of various reproductive age classes (young, prime breeding and aged) and reproductive histories (conceived and raised pups, conceived but lost pups, pseudo-pregnant and unpaired). Ovarian steroids were extracted from feces and assessed by enzyme immunoassay. Concentrations of estrogen metabolites gradually increased, b

Gray Wolf Exposure to Emerging Vector-Borne Diseases in Wisconsin with Comparison to Domestic Dogs and Humans.

World-wide concern over emerging vector-borne diseases has increased in recent years for both animal and human health. In the United Sates, concern about vector-borne diseases in canines has focused on Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and heartworm which infect domestic and wild canids. Of these diseases, Lyme and anaplasmosis are also frequently diagnosed in humans. Gray wolves (Canis lupus) recolonized Wisconsin in the 1970s, and we evaluated their temporal and geographic patterns of exposure to these four vector-borne diseases in Wisconsin as the population expanded between 1985 an

Sequence analysis of three pigmentation genes in the Newfoundland population of Canis latrans links the Golden Retriever Mc1r variant to white coat color in coyotes.

Three genes, Mc1r, Agouti, and CBD103, interact in a type-switching process that controls much of the pigmentation variation observed in mammals. A deletion in the CBD103 gene is responsible for dominant black color in dogs, while the white-phased black bear ("spirit bear") of British Columbia, Canada, is the lightest documented color variant caused by a mutation in Mc1r. Rare all-white animals have recently been discovered in a new northeastern population of the coyote in insular Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. To investigate the causative gene and mutation of white coat in coyotes, we seq

Etruscan Wolf Canis etruscus (Canidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

The cranial and mandibular fragments of the medium-sized canid from the Early Pleistocene locality of Taurida cave (about 1.8-1.5 Ma) in Crimea are described and included in the hypodigm of the species Canis etruscus Forsyth Major, 1877, a common member of the Late Villafranchian fauna of the Circum-Mediterranean region. This species is reported for the first time from the Northern Black Sea region. The discovered evidence reinforce previous published idea regarding the periodically use of the Taurida cave by canids and other large predators as a den and shelter.

MASTICATORY MUSCLE MYOSITIS IN A GRAY WOLF (CANIS LUPUS).

A 10-yr-old male, neutered gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) was presented for atrophy of the temporalis and masseter muscles. Clinical signs and magnetic resonance imaging were consistent with a myopathy. Positive serology for antibody titers directed against Type 2M myofibers, and the observation of a mixed mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate along with eosinophils and neutrophils within the temporalis muscle, were diagnostic for masticatory muscle myositis. Importantly, protozoal myositis was excluded based on other clinicopathologic data. The case highlights the potential for immune-mediated

The role of the wolf in endemic sylvatic Trichinella britovi infection in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy.

During the period 2004-2014 in the Abruzzi region (Central Italy), muscle samples gathered from hunted wild boars (n=16,323) and retrieved from carcasses of other susceptible wild mammals (n=838) and birds (n=438) were tested for Trichinella larvae according to European Union regulations. Although no positive samples were found from wild birds, 91 wild mammals tested positive. Six species were found to harbor Trichinella spp. infections, namely wolf (Canis lupus, 59 positive samples out of 218), red fox (Vulpes vulpes, 24/480), wild boar (Sus scrofa, 3/16,323), stone marten (Martes foina, 2/27

A Validated LC-MS/MS Method for Simultaneous Determination of Cortisol and Cortisone in Grey Wolf Hair for Application in Ecological Studies.

Hair is an easily obtainable, non-invasive biomatrix that allows for the assessment of long-term physiological responses to environmental and anthropogenic stressors in wildlife populations. Herein, an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method was validated to verify its suitability for the simultaneous determination of cortisol (CORT) and its metabolite, cortisone (CORN), in hair samples collected from wild-living grey wolves (Canis lupus). Hair samples were extracted with methanol and purified using solid-phase extr

Detection of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in animals from three zoos in Slovakia.

The aim of this study was to detect antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in exotic animal species kept in three zoos in Slovakia. Antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum were detected by commercial Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, ID Screen Toxoplasmosis Indirect Multispecies and ID Screen Neospora caninum Indirect Multispecies, ID Vet, Montpellier, France). Antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum were detected in 43% (24/56) and 5% (3/55) of animals, respectively. The three animals with N. caninum antibodies: two wolves (Canis lupus) and one Hartmann's mountain Zebra (E

Helminth infracommunity in a maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, from the humid Chaco, Argentina.

Parasitism is an important factor in conservation worldwide, especially for endangered species, as it can affect host populations by reducing growth rates, fecundity and affecting nutritional status. The maned wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus, a near-threatened species, is distributed across different habitats from the south Amazonian forest in Brazil to northern Argentina, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Most studies on gastrointestinal parasites in wild maned wolves are based on coprological findings, and there is little information about adult parasites and parasite species richness. Therefore, thi

Serologic survey of trichinellosis in wild mammals kept in a Mexico City Zoo.

A serologic survey of Trichinella infection was carried out to determine the prevalence of this parasitosis among wild mammals kept in captivity at the Chapultepec Zoo. This was prompted by the necropsy finding of a heavy Trichinella infection in a Canadian polar bear (Ursus maritimus) that had been kept at the Zoo for more than 11 years. The parasites recovered were identified as T. nativa (T2). A serologic study based on ELISA and Western blot analysis was performed in serum samples from two polar bears (U. maritimus), six wolves (Canis lupus); nine foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus); seven co

A new canid host for subcutaneous ticks: A report from Algeria in an African golden wolf (Canis lupaster).

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophagous ectoparasites that feed on the skin surface of their host. Subcutaneous localizations of ticks have predominantly been associated with red foxes, documenting new cases still brings new and potentially valuable data for tackling this unusual situation. The objective of this study is to report the presence of subcutaneous ticks in a new host and on a new continent. METHODS: Between February 2022 and September 2023, 47 road-killed animal carcasses belonging mostly to carnivorous species were subjected to a comprehensive parasitological necropsy. Upon detection

Post-zoster fibroelastolytic papulosis: an example of Wolf isotopic response.

Wolf isotopic response describes the onset of a new dermatosis at the site of a previous, healed dermatosis, which is usually a herpes zoster infection. Fibroelastolytic papulosis is a poorly understood elastolytic condition defined by a loss of elastic fibers specific to the papillary dermis. The present report describes a case of fibroelastolytic papulosis with onset following herpes zoster infection. This association provides new evidence for an immunopathogenic origin for fibroelastolytic papulosis and further supports current theories of the pathogenesis of Wolf isotopic response.
