Insufficient sleep and fitness to drive in shift workers: A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient sleep, <6.5 h per night, majorly affects shift workers, placing them at higher risk for motor vehicle crash related injury or fatality. While systematic reviews (SLRs) examine the effects of insufficient sleep and driving, to date, no SLR focuses on driver fitness or performance in shift workers. OBJECTIVES: Determine the class of evidence (Class I-highest to Class IV-lowest), and level of confidence (Level A-high, to Level U-insufficient) in the determinants of driver fitness and performance in shift workers. Next, consider evidence-based recommendations for clinical

Differences in cortisol profiles and circadian adjustment time between nurses working night shifts and regular day shifts: A prospective longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the differences in the circadian salivary cortisol profiles between nurses working night shifts and regular day shifts following a slow rotating shift schedule to assess the number of days required for adjusting the circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol levels in nurses working consecutive night shifts and the number of days off required to restore the diurnal circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol levels. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal, parallel-group comparative study. The participants were randomly assigned to night and day-shift groups, and sal

Are there differences in students' school success, biorhythm, and daytime sleepiness depending on their school starting times?

Chronotype is a characteristic of a person in a certain point of one's lifetime and it slowly changes with age. Adolescents start to go to bed later while schools impose early starting hours, which may become a problem for students who are unable to adapt their circadian rhythm. The aim of this study was to determine if differences in school starting times affect the students' chronotype, school success, or daytime sleepiness. We tested a total of 1020 students from four high schools in Osijek, Croatia. The students had alternating school shifts (school starting hours 7 AM or 13 PM and 8 AM or

[Night shift work and cancer risk: a literature review].

About 15-20% of the employees in Europe and in the USA are engaged in shift work that involves night work. Some experimental and observational data indicate that this type of work might lead to circadian disruption, including disruption in the melatonin synthesis - a hormone of anticarcinogenic and antioxidative properties. A hypothesis that there is a potential link between exposure to light at night and the risk of breast cancer was formulated for the first time by Stevens in 1987. Since then, relatively few epidemiological studies have been carried out in this area (15 studies including 8 c

[Ergonomic and hygiene-associated aspects of work among supervision wardens].

Occupations associated with supervision involve various activities. Individuals employed in supervisory capacity may work as doorkeepers and receptionists, exit ticket inspectors, parking wardens or plant supervisors patrolling the area around the factory similarly to industrial guards. Supervision wardens are exposed to factors detrimental to human body. These negative factors include such phenomena as work in changeable climatic conditions, shift work, or a potential risk of injuries. The present authors emphasize the fact that the power expenditure at this kind of work is fairly low (314 kc

Circadian disruption, shift work and the risk of cancer: a summary of the evidence and studies in Seattle.

There is increasing interest in the possibility that disruption of normal circadian rhythm may increase the risk of developing cancer. Persons who engage in nightshift work may exhibit altered nighttime melatonin levels and reproductive hormone profiles that could increase the risk of hormone-related diseases, including breast cancer. Epidemiologic studies are now beginning to emerge suggesting that women who work at night, and who experience sleep deprivation, circadian disruption, and exposure to light-at-night are at an increased risk of breast cancer, and possibly colorectal cancer as well

The effect of shiftwork on driving to and from work.

A questionnaire study was conducted to obtain information from shiftworkers on the levels of tiredness experienced on the drive to and from work at different times of the day. The results demonstrated that, compared to non-shiftworkers, shiftworkers were more tired on the drive between their home and the workplace and more at risk of falling asleep behind the wheel. The main factors contributing to this increased level of sleepiness and associated driving impairment were the length of the sleep period prior to work, the type of shift and the travelling time. There was some evidence to suggest

Psychophysical study of six hand movements.

This study represents a continuation of a series of psychophysical studies on repetitive motions of the wrist and hand conducted at the Liberty Mutual Research Center for Safety and Health. The purpose of the study was to quantify maximum acceptable forces of six motions performed on separate days but within the context of the same experiment. The six motions were wrist flexion with a power grip, wrist extension with a power grip, wrist flexion with a pinch grip, wrist extension with a pinch grip, ulnar deviation with a power grip, and a handgrip task (with a power grip). A psychophysical meth

Metabolic biomarkers and cardiometabolic risk among night shift workers: evidence from night shift workers in Europe.

Circadian disruption resulting from night shift work has been associated with cardiometabolic diseases, but the underlying biological pathways remain insufficiently understood. We analyzed data from the EPHOR-NIGHT cohort, including questionnaires, clinical assessments [body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), waist/hip circumference], and plasma metabolites in blood samples (N = 860; day shift workers n = 362, night shift workers = 498) from Sweden, Spain, and Denmark. We applied multivariable linear regression to examine differences in cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolite levels be

The moderating role of protective factors in shift work disorder and health outcomes: A cross-sectional study.

This study investigated whether sleep-specific (e.g. chronotype) and traditional (e.g. resilience) protective factors were associated with reduced shift work disorder (SWD) risk and explored their role as moderators in the relationship between SWD risk and health. Shift workers (n = 126) participated in a cross-sectional study evaluating SWD risk (i.e. low vs. high; SWD-screening Questionnaire), mental health (Patient Health Questionnaire-9; Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7), physical health (Subjective Health Complaints Inventory), sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; Insomnia S

Working against the clock: the impact of shift patterns on cognitive function, mental health, and stimulant use among healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is common in healthcare and has been associated with negative physical, cognitive, and mental health consequences. It may also associate with greater dependency on stimulants as a way of overcoming fatigue and a lowered level of alertness. AIM: This study was to investigate an association between shift pattern, cognitive function, mental health (depression and anxiety), and stimulant use among healthcare workers. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. A convenience sampling of 445 healthcare workers was recruited from two university-affiliated and two

Risk factors of chronic urticaria among nurses with insomnia: A nationwide population-based study.

Chronic urticaria has a high economic burden and reduces patient's quality of life. Nurses experience insomnia because of their shifting work, especially if they work night shifts and 3-shift rotational schedules. This study aimed to examine whether insomnia is a risk factor of chronic urticaria in nurses.Data were obtained from the Registry for Medical Personnel, which contains all registered medical staff between 2007 and 2008. All study subjects were divided into those with insomnia and without insomnia. The primary exposure of interest was chronic urticaria. In addition, potential comorbid

Work hours reform: perceptions and desires of contemporary surgical residents.

BACKGROUND: New Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements on resident duty hours are scheduled to undergo nationwide implementation in July 2003. General surgery residents, because of their long duty hours, are likely to be among those most affected by changes imposed to comply with the ACGME requirements. There are few contemporary data on their attitudes toward work hours reform. STUDY DESIGN: The study entailed a region-wide survey of residents enrolled in general surgery residencies in New England to characterize the perceptions and desires of surgical resi

Effects of a night float system on housestaff neuropsychologic function.

To examine the effect of a night float call system (NFS), a battery of neuropsychologic tests was administered to housestaff after call during an overnight call system (ONCS), and the results were compared with the results obtained during a NFS. Although NFS housestaff were less sleep-deprived, results of tests of psychomotor function were not different. Importantly, both groups had high depression, hostility, and anxiety scores. NFS housestaff had small but significantly lower depression scores, which, if not due to time of year, may represent a positive effect of the NFS. Future investigatio

Industrial workers on a rotating shift pattern: adaptation and injury status.

Over 11 million Americans work some type of shift pattern. Numerous health and safety issues result when workers follow a rotating shift schedule. Over 5 million work-related injuries occur annually in the United States at a cost of almost $48 billion. Disrupted circadian rhythms and fatigue from rotating shifts have been implicated as a cause of traumatic injuries. This study revealed that factors related to circadian type, effects of the work environment, and coping styles explained over 51% of the variance in adaptation scores for this group of rotating shiftworkers. Adaptation levels were

Intensive care unit nurses' perceptions of night-work-related chronic fatigue and cognitive function: a cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Night work disrupts circadian physiology and sleep, with documented consequences for the health and performance of nurses. In the intensive care unit (ICU), where sustained attention, rapid responses, and precision are essential to patient safety, night-work-related cognitive impairment is of particular concern for both patient and staff safety. This study examined how ICU nurses perceive the impact of night work on their cognitive functions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a non-probability convenience sample of 50 nurses in the one ICU in Croatia. An ques
