Long-term sickness absence due to musculoskeletal disorders: the necessary intervention of work conditions.

To make rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders effective it is crucial to identify circumstances that tend to support the persistence of sickness absence. A total of 93 patients with recently developed disorders in the neck and shoulders were followed for one year after rehabilitation, in order to identify factors associated with recovery and chronicity, respectively. Health status was evaluated before rehabilitation and after 12 months in terms of sickness absence, pain ratings and self-rated quality of life, the Sickness Impact Profile. The study group was divided into tertiles based on

Work-related respiratory health conditions among construction workers: a systematic narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence in both developed and developing countries indicate that occupational health hazards and diseases among construction workers constitute a significant public health challenge. While occupational health hazards and conditions in the construction sector are diverse, a burgeoning body of knowledge is emerging about respiratory health hazards and diseases. Yet, there is a notable gap in the existing literature in terms of comprehensive syntheses of the available evidence on this topic. In light of this research gap, this study systematically reviewed the global evidenc

What are the Predictors of Return to Work for People With Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Conditions? A Systematic Review.

Purpose Conditions affecting the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand can cause debilitating pain and loss of function in the working population. While there is knowledge about intervention options for this region of the body, there is limited research on systematically identifying the predictors of return to work in this population. Methods A systematic literature review identified all English-language studies that assess predictors of return to work for people with elbow, wrist, and hand conditions from 2009 to 2021 using PRISMA guidelines. Studies that examined exclusively shoulder injuries, ran

Behavioral And Other Chronic Conditions Among Adult Medicaid Enrollees: Implications For Work Requirements.

Work requirements condition Medicaid eligibility on completing a specified number of hours of employment, work search, job training, or community service. Little is known about how behavioral health and other chronic health conditions intersect with employment status among Medicaid enrollees who may be subject to work requirements. Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health for the period 2014-16, we found that people with behavioral health and other chronic health conditions were more likely to be enrolled in Medicaid and subject to work requirements than those without any ide

[Work conditions and health status of workers in present-day production of disperse azo dyes].

The work conditions appeared to be unfavorable in modern production of dispersed nitro dyes, having up-to-date technologic equipment and automated control systems. The main occupational hazards are semiproducts (nitroaniline derivatives containing chlorine, bromine and cyanides) used as diazo components in dyes synthesis, dispersers based on sodium lignosulfonate, outlet forms of dispersed nitro dyes. Medical examination of the workers exposed to combination of chemicals amounting several times over the MACs proved frequent diseases of upper respiratory tract and cardiovascular system, functio

Working in Extreme Heat, an Invisible Occupational Risk: Legislation, Risk Management and Policy Recommendations for Türkiye: Turkish Thoracic Society Workshop Report on the Regulation of Working Conditions in Extreme Heat.

Extreme heat, amplified by climate change, has become a predictable and escalating occupational hazard in Türkiye, increasing the burden of heat-related illnesses, traumatic workplace injuries, and productivity losses among both outdoor and indoor workers, particularly in labor-intensive sectors and among vulnerable populations. This Turkish Thoracic Society workshop report synthesizes interdisciplinary expert input and available evidence to propose a practical, prevention-focused framework for regulating working conditions in extreme temperatures. The recommendations were systematically devel

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on working conditions and mental health among employees in health and social services.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed major challenges in the workplace. This exploratory, cross-sectional study investigated the association between occupational activities and mental health. METHODS: In 2023, 576 employees from health and social care institutions were surveyed about their occupational situation, their self-assessed ability to work, health-related issues, as well as their mental health and quality of life. RESULTS: The respondents were predominantly women with an average age of 49 years. Of these, 59% were healthcare workers (HCWs), such as nurses, physicians and ther

Individual changes in working and health conditions: A longitudinal study of 8,000 employees between 2010 and 2017 in France.

BACKGROUND: The diverse and complex variations in the possible forms of health-work interactions are constantly reconfigured over the course of a person's career. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were: 1) assess the scope of the individual changes in working conditions; 2) examine conjoint changes in working conditions; 3) examine the links between these changes and back pain and fatigue. METHOD: Analyses were conducted using data from the French observatory EVREST. The variations for each individual (close to 8,000 in total) were studied by comparing data for each individual obtained at t

A Naphthalimide-Based Cd(2+) Fluorescent Probe with Carbamoylmethyl Groups Working as Chelators and PET-Promoters under Neutral Conditions.

We have developed a novel naphthalimide-based Cd(2+) fluorescent probe (1), featuring almost no background response, high sensitivity and selectivity toward Cd(2+) through its high association constant [K=(2.10±0.423)×10(6) ], and a practical working pH range. Membrane-permeability was conferred on 1 by replacing the imide and amide substituents with n-butyl groups, and hence the derivative (4) has found practical utility on fluorescent imaging of Cd(2+) in HeLa cells. Comparison of fluorescent properties between various compounds derived from 1 has demonstrated that the carbamoylmethyl groups

Raw deal for workers: why have U.S. workers experienced a long-term decline in pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Pay, opportunities, and job quality have worsened for most U.S. workers over the past 30 years, across most sectors of the economy. This decline is related to fundamental changes in the economy and society, including sluggish productivity growth and employer assaults on workers' rights and protections. Productivity growth has slowed as companies no longer invest as much in equipment and training. Businesses have attacked workers' protections; unionization is down, and the minimum wage is worth about two-thirds as much as at its high point in the late 1960s. The National Labor Relations Board,

Working conditions and occupational well-being of academics in the post-COVID-19 era: a qualitative follow-up study.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to substantial changes in working conditions in academia. This study aimed to explore how academics' perceptions of job demands, resources and occupational well-being have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their expectations and concerns regarding future working practices. To achieve this aim, we conducted a qualitative follow-up study with 16 academics who participated in our previous study during the COVID-19 pandemic (interviews conducted in 2020-2021) and were re-interviewed in 2025. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed
