Improving reading and writing learning in underprivileged pluri-ethnic settings.

BACKGROUND: Many studies carried out in first language contexts tend to demonstrate the positive effects of activity programmes aimed at (1) developing metaphonological abilities and (2) developing language skills through active story listening on learning to read and to spell by first-grade students. AIMS: This study seeks to extend previous findings by (a) including children, the majority of whom have French as a second language, who attend plurilingual schools and have not been included in previous studies, and (b) providing training based on three essential principles shared by the two ki

Scholarly Writing Development: A Descriptive-Interpretive Study of Nurse Faculty.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine how nurse educators develop as scholarly writers. BACKGROUND: To broaden the body of knowledge used to inform practice, nurses need to develop scholarly writing skills. However, writing skill acquisition is inconsistent, resulting from wide variation in or absence of deliberate writing development across all levels of nursing education. METHOD: A descriptive-interpretive design underpinned by naturalistic inquiry using semistructured interviews of nursing faculty (N = 16) was used. RESULTS: Five stages of writing skill acquisition emerged from the d

Immune evasive DNA donors and recombinases license kilobase-scale writing.

Genome-editing technologies that use recombinases to insert kilobase-scale DNA sequences into mammalian genomes canonically require large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) donors1,2. However, dsDNA molecules evoke problematic and toxic innate immune responses, limiting integration efficiencies and generally constraining applicability to ex vivo or immune-deficient contexts. By harnessing mechanisms of integrative prokaryotic viruses and mobile genetic elements, here we demonstrate that recombinases are compatible with immune evasive circular single-stranded DNA molecules optimally bearing a partial-

Scholarly Skills Series: How to Succeed in Writing Case Reports.

Case reports serve an important entry point for scholarship in palliative care (PC), yet many clinicians lack a practical roadmap for moving from an interesting encounter to a publishable article. In this inaugural article for the Journal of Palliative Medicine "Scholarly Skills Series," we provide a concise, replicable framework for writing case reports with a PC lens. We focus on the PC adaptation of the CAse Report (CARE) guidelines while providing a structured three-phase framework. Organized into a "Before, During, After" structure, we outline key steps and common pitfalls, including sele

Mathematics-Writing Performance of Students Experiencing Mathematics Difficulties in China.

This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the mathematics-writing (MW) performance of students with mathematics difficulties (MDs) in China. We compared the performance of students with MD with their typically developing (TD) and high-performing (HP) peers. The analysis was based on a sample of 138 sixth-grade students. Our findings revealed (a) the trend in MW performance followed the hierarchy of mathematics ability levels (HP > TD > MD), whereas all groups displayed similar performance in general writing (HP = TD = MD), (b) although all three groups were able to organiz

Writing abilities longitudinally predict academic outcomes of adolescents with ADHD.

Students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience a host of negative academic outcomes, and deficits in reading and mathematics abilities contribute to these academic impairments. Students with ADHD may also have difficulties with written expression, but there has been minimal research in this area and it is not clear whether written expression abilities uniquely contribute to the academic functioning of students with ADHD. The current study included a sample of 104 middle school students diagnosed with ADHD (Grades 6-8). Participants were followed longitudinally t

Instability-Assisted Direct Writing of Microstructured Fibers Featuring Sacrificial Bonds.

A 30 μm-diameter thread of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) dissolved in dichloromethane is deposited on top of the eye of a sewing needle. The deposition robot traces a straight line; the helical shape of the thread is due to the liquid rope coiling instability. This instability is used to fabricate microstructured fibers with tailored mechanical properties.

Training communication abilities in Rett Syndrome through reading and writing.

The goal of this clinical case study is to investigate the possibility of training communication abilities in people with Rett Syndrome (RS). Usually, girls with RS never exceed the sensorimotor stage of development, but the inter-individual variability typical of RS may lead us to doubt the irrevocability of that developmental limit, especially for those girls who are engaged in cognitive rehabilitation. The case study reported here concerns a 21-year-old girl with RS who was engaged in cognitive rehabilitation training based upon the principles of Feuerstein's modificability and mediated lea

Writing Motivation of College Students in Basic Writing and First-Year Composition Classes: Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Scales on Goals, Self-Efficacy, Beliefs, and Affect.

The purpose of the study was to validate a writing motivation questionnaire that consists of four scales for first-year college writers-students with low writing skills in basic writing classes and students in typical first-year composition (FYC)-to investigate differences between these two groups and to examine the relationship of motivational constructs with writing quality. Participants were 371 college students (142 in basic writing classes and 229 in FYC). Students completed a 49-item motivation questionnaire with scales for goal-orientation, self-efficacy, beliefs, and affect about writi

Writing for Health: Rationale and Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial of Internet-Based Benefit-Finding Writing for Adults With Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is Australia's fastest growing chronic disease, and has high comorbidity with depression. Both subthreshold depression and diabetes distress are common amongst people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and are associated with poorer diabetes self-care. A need exists for low-intensity self-help interventions for large numbers of people with diabetes and diabetes distress or subthreshold depression, as part of a stepped-care approach to meeting the psychological needs of people with diabetes. Benefit-finding writing is a very brief intervention that involves writing ab

Promoting linguistic complexity, greater message length and ease of engagement in email writing in people with aphasia: initial evidence from a study utilizing assistive writing software.

BACKGROUND: Improving email writing in people with aphasia could enhance their ability to communicate, promote interaction and reduce isolation. Spelling therapies have been effective in improving single-word writing. However, there has been limited evidence on how to achieve changes to everyday writing tasks such as email writing in people with aphasia. One potential area that has been largely unexplored in the literature is the potential use of assistive writing technologies, despite some initial evidence that assistive writing software use can lead to qualitative and quantitative improvemen

Tuning the reflection band of ordered nanocomposites using direct laser writing.

Hierarchical ordering is common in Nature, where materials are organised in specific architectures across multiple scales, to achieve function-led design. Herein, we demonstrate multi-tiered organisation of silica nanoparticles (NPs), within a nanocomposite by employing direct laser writing (DLW). The hierarchical arrangement was optimised for wide-gamut reflected colour across the visible range by controlling NP size, NP type (core-shell and core-only), NP volume, and DLW fabrication parameters. The obtained microstructures were characterised using SEM, demonstrating retained order of non-clo

Writing as formation: supervising AI use in early-career medical authorship.

International editorial bodies require authors to disclose the use of large language models in manuscript preparation and to retain accountability for the final text. This guidance is appropriate for formed researchers but does not address what trainees should or should not do during the formative phase of a doctoral thesis, a residency case report, or a first-authored paper. I propose a supervisor-led framework for AI use in medical doctoral and early-career scientific writing, grounded in an argument about professional formation rather than compliance alone; the scope is the writing and inte

"We Were Movement People First": Teaching Writing through Relationship and Struggle.

We interviewed Minnie Bruce around her dining table in Syracuse, NY in December 2019. In this excerpt from the interview, we share how Minnie Bruce learned to teach through organizing; how her classroom shifted us from parallel learners to siblings in the struggle; and how she joined us as our coconspirator, friend, and mentor after her retirement. She touches on how much rural Alabama-particularly the Cahaba River and the creatures that inhabit it-shaped her understanding of land, liberation, and creative practice. Learning from Minnie Bruce, both in college classrooms and in community organi
