Traditional medicine poisoning in Zimbabwe: clinical presentation and management in adults.

Traditional medicines (TMs) have been reported as major causes of hospital admissions in some African countries including Zimbabwe. There is, however, still a paucity of information with regards to their clinical presentations. We carried out a retrospective case series of all cases of traditional medicine poisoning (TMP) at eight main referral hospitals in Zimbabwe January 1998-December 1999 inclusive) to describe the most common signs and symptoms, reasons for, and management of TMP in adults. Where the reasons for taking the TM were known, most cases had taken the medicine for either abdomi

The control of heartwater on large-scale commercial and smallholder farms in Zimbabwe.

As part of a series of studies associated with the development of improved vaccines for heartwater (a tick-borne disease of ruminant livestock caused by Cowdria ruminantium), field surveys were carried out to assess losses associated with the disease and the costs associated with controlling it in the two main agro-ecological zones of Zimbabwe (lowveld and highveld) where heartwater is believed to be endemic and epidemic, respectively. In each zone, a cross-sectional study was performed in the main farming systems (smallholder (SH) and large-scale commercial (LSC) beef and dairy), followed by

Problems, struggles and some success with spinal cord injury in Zimbabwe.

Spinal cord injury is a common occurrence in Zimbabwe and carries with it a high morbidity and mortality. In the past almost all patients discharged from hospital were dead within a year. Reasons for this high mortality are presented. The establishment of the National Rehabilitation Centre has had a profound impact on the survival of these individuals as well as on improving their quality of life. The results of a retrospective survey on the mortality and life situation of individuals with spinal cord injuries sustained through trauma are presented. However major unresolved problems are inadeq

Traditional herbal remedies used for the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis in Zimbabwe.

A total of 286 traditional healers, 85% of them registered with the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers' Association (ZINATHA), in five administrative provinces of Zimbabwe, were interviewed to assess their knowledge about the signs and symptoms of urinary schistosomiasis. Information on the names of plants used to treat Schistosoma haematobium infections was solicited. Haematuria was mentioned by 99% of the traditional healers to be the most obvious sign of S. haematobium infection. General body weakness, increased urinary frequency and pain on micturition also were reported to be some of t

Snake bites in Zimbabwe: a clinical study with emphasis on the need for antivenom.

A retrospective analysis of 83 consecutive patients (42 males and 41 females) treated for snake bites at Mpilo Central Hospital between January 1990 and June 1992 is presented. In Zimbabwe poisonous snakes belong to four families; Colubrids (Boomslang), Vipers (Puff Adder), Elapids (Mambas and Cobras) and Atractaspids (Bibron Stilleto snake). The Puff Adder is responsible for three quarters of the bites. Forty eight pc (40/83) of the patients were below 20 years of age (range 1 year 10 months to 72 years). Most bites occurred at night (61 pc) in the rainy season (November to April). The majori

Use of ultrasound in a study of schistosomal periportal fibrosis in rural Zimbabwe.

Ultrasound was used to diagnose periportal fibrosis (PPF) in a rural Zimbabwean community where Schistosoma mansoni is endemic. Ultrasound findings were compared with stool microscopy and abdominal palpation in 492 adults (305 females). 47 (9.6%) had definite PPF. The prevalence of PPF increased with age (P < 0.001), while S. mansoni egg counts decreased with age. Even within age groups, egg count did not correlate with PPF. No association was found between lifetime alcohol consumption and the presence of PPF. Splenomegaly and mid-line enlargement of the liver were specific (97% and 94%) but i

The epidemiology and control of hookworm infection in the Burma Valley area of Zimbabwe.

An integrated hookworm control programme, involving mass chemotherapy and improvements in public health, was conducted in the Burma Valley and Vumba areas of Zimbabwe between 1985 and 1990. Three sequential annual mass chemotherapy programmes were implemented. Infection status was monitored annually throughout. Initial observations indicated asymptotic age prevalence and intensity profiles, with peak infection levels in adults. Mass chemotherapy was shown to have immediate and medium term benefits for community health. Reinfection was slow to develop, and average intensity had not returned to

Directory of socio-behavioural research on HIV infection and AIDS in Zimbabwe.

In July-August 1992, a directory was made of research projects on socio-behavioural aspects of HIV infection and AIDS in Zimbabwe. A total of 92 research projects were identified, most of which were already completed. Whilst there was a wide variety of topics, populations and geographical areas covered, there was a strong bias towards AIDS awareness and knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) studies. Many of these were not linked with any specific AIDS prevention programme or with policy making. Suggestions are given to make better use of existing scientific information. A call is made upon

HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases at a rural hospital in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: To define the epidemiological characteristics of STD patients attending an outpatient clinic in rural Zimbabwe, to examine the aetiologic agents causing infection and to determine their relationship with HIV infection. SUBJECTS: 319 men and 146 women, making a sample of about 7% all patients attending an STD clinic during the 3 month study period. Microbiological data were collected from 104 men and 72 women selected randomly from these. Pregnant women were excluded and patients who had received antibiotics within the previous 14 days were excluded from the microbiology sub-sample.

Maternal height and age: risk factors for cephalopelvic disproportion in Zimbabwe.

Maternal age and stature are among several factors used to screen pregnant women for potential risk of labour complications. In a population-based case-control study in Harare, Zimbabwe, multivariate analysis was carried out to evaluate the importance of maternal age and height as risk factors for cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD). Using data abstracted from the medical records of 203 women with operative deliveries due to CPD and 299 women with normal unassisted vaginal deliveries, multiple logistic regression models were developed. Although maternal age < 18 years was not a significant risk

A study of well-being of elderly people in three communities in Zimbabwe.

The purpose of this research was to assess the well-being of elderly people in three different community types in Zimbabwe. Well-being was defined as general health, health resource access, nutrition, habits, and physical function. Major health problems, hygiene, nutrition and access to health care did vary between communities, but there was a low level of physical dependency throughout. The findings suggest that once a critical decline in fitness occurs, elderly people may rapidly die as a result of diminished medical and physical support. These findings are relevant to future plans for elder

Seroepidemiology of spotted fever group rickettsial infections in humans in Zimbabwe.

In sera collected throughout Zimbabwe the prevalence of antibodies reactive with Rickettsia conorii (Kenya) and a Zimbabwean spotted fever group rickettsia (ZSFR) was investigated using an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). A random sample of these sera was also tested using a commercial IFA test. There was close agreement between IFA titres using the African rickettsial antigens and the commercial antigen slides. When differences in titre were detected, these were rarely greater than a twofold serum dilution. In Western blot immunoassays, IFA positive human sera detected immunogens of Z

Homozygous alpha+ thalassaemia in Zimbabwe: an unrecognized cause of hypochromia and microcytosis.

The prevalence of probable homozygous alpha+ thalassaemia in Zimbabwe was found to be 3.25 percent in a survey of hospital patients (n = 2,000), 7.6 percent in a Batonga village (n = 66), and 5.3 percent in 16 kindreds (n = 94) investigated for iron overload. The diagnosis was based on finding a reduced mean cell volume (MCV), reduced mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), increased red cell count (RBC), and a normal Haemoglobin. These cases usually had a normal red cell distribution width (RDW), and of three discriminant functions tested the MCV2 x MCH was the most useful. Iron deficiency was excluded

Patterns of glomerulonephritis in Zimbabwe: survey of disease characterised by nephrotic proteinuria.

Ninety-eight Zimbabweans with glomerulonephritis characterised by nephrotic proteinuria were studied. There was no evidence to implicate Schistosoma mansoni or S. haemotobium in the aetiology, although schistosomiasis was diagnosed in 54 patients in the series. Similarly, Plasmodium malariae proved unimportant as a cause of the nephrotic syndrome, only one patient showing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis which was associated with subclinical quartan malarial infection. Nevertheless, infections were shown to play a major role in the genesis of glomerulonephritis which was associated with beta

Hip fracture care in Zimbabwe : a cohort-based health economic analysis.

AIMS: Hip fractures are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly among older people. While early surgical management improves outcomes compared to non-surgical approaches, high costs of surgery pose significant barriers in low- and middle-income countries. A cost-utility analysis of hip fracture management was undertaken in Zimbabwe, to guide resource allocation and policy. METHODS: Patient-level data were obtained from a prospective cohort of adults aged 40 years and above with acute hip fractures presenting to hospital in Harare (two public; five private) between O

Understanding HIV and associated risk factors among religious groups in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The influence of religion and belief systems is widely recognized as an important factor in understanding of health risk perception and myths in the general fight against the HIV pandemic. This study compares the understanding of HIV risk factors and utilization of some HIV services among religious groups in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We conducted secondary data statistical analysis to investigate the understanding of HIV and associated risk factors among religious groups in Zimbabwe using 2015-2016 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) data. We began by investigating associations
