Serum beta 2-microglobulin concentrations were determined in samples of 65 patients with benign or malignant monoclonal gammopathy. In the group of patients suffering from multiple myeloma or Waldenström's macroglobulinemia the mean beta 2-microglobulin level was significantly higher than in the group with benign monoclonal gammopathy. AIMS: High immune cell infiltration in gliomas establishes an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, which in turn promotes resistance to immunotherapy. To evaluate the role of urinary beta-2 microglobulin (B2mG) as an early predictive biomarker of acute kidney injury (AKI) in neonates with perinatal asphyxia. In this prospective cohort study, 80 term infants with perinatal asphyxia were included. The neonates were divided into AKI and no-AKI groups. Urinary B2mG levels were measured at 24 h of life. Urine was collected from 289 inhabitants of a cadmium-polluted quarter of Stadskanaal. The excretion of cadmium, protein, beta-2-microglobulin and glucose were determined. After being divided according to sex and to smoking habits, the results of the inhabitants were compared with those of 293 controls. The urinary excretion of albumin and beta 2-microglobulin in a population of 294 persons, living in an area where Balkan nephropathy is endemic, has been studied. INTRODUCTION: Urine β2 microglobulin (β2m) is a validated marker to diagnose sepsis and toxin-related acute kidney injury (AKI). In the current study, we used urine β2m as a potential marker to identify persistent tubular dysfunction following a clinical recovery from snake venom-related AKI.
