We present a case of a 63-year-old woman with a history of compensated alcoholic cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) who presented with a 3-day history of hematochezia. Initial laboratory results showed severe anemia with a hemoglobin level of 4.3 g/dl. She was then prepared for an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy (CSP). The EGD showed moderate inflammation in the antrum and duodenal bulb without signs of bleeding. CSP revealed friable mucosa with spontaneous bleeding in the proximal ascending colon and cecum, indicating a cat scratch pattern. Additionally, non-bleeding

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe infectious disease affecting the endocardium and cardiac valves, caused by various pathogens. Among numerous pathogenic microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus is the most common, followed by other streptococci such as Streptococcus viridans and enterococci. Bartonella, a Gram-negative, fastidious parasitic bacillus, is a rare causative agent of IE Streptococcus constellatus, belonging to the Streptococcus milleri group, commonly colonizes oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract, which can cause infections when host imm

PURPOSE: To characterize the ocular manifestations of Bartonella henselae infection in Chinese patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the ocular manifestations due to Bartonella henselae infection at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centers in China between July 2019 and February 2025. Patients with presumptive ocular cat-scratch disease (CSD) confirmed by serum anti-B. henselae IgG titers ≥ 1:256 (via indirect immunofluorescence assay), compatible ocular findings, and possible exposure history were enrolled. Data on demographics, ocular features (visual acuity, anterior/posterior segment fin

OBJECTIVES: Bartonella spp., renowned for cat-scratch disease, has limited reports of dissemination. Tissue and blood cultures have limitations in detecting this fastidious pathogen. Molecular testing (polymerase chain reaction, PCR) and cell-free DNA have provided an avenue for diagnoses. This retrospective observational multicenter study describes the incidence of disseminated Bartonella spp. and treatment-related outcomes.
METHODS: Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of bartonellosis via diagnosis code, serology testing of blood, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, 16/18S tests of bloo

Bartonella henselae is a slow-growing, Gram-negative bacterium that causes cat scratch disease in humans. A transstadial transmission of the bacteria from larvae to nymphs of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) ticks, suspected to be a potential vector of the bacteria, has been previously demonstrated. The present study aims to investigate transovarial transmission of B. henselae from R. sanguineus s.l. adults to their instars. Adult ticks (25 males and 25 females) were fed through an artificial feeding system on B. henselae-infected goat blood for 14 days, and 300 larvae derived from t

Lymph node enlargement is a common medical problem, and in a large number of patients, the causes of lymphadenopathy remain undiagnosed. We report a thorough microbiological analysis of 1,688 lymph node biopsy specimens collected in our bartonellosis reference center. We studied lymph node biopsy samples from patients with suspected regional infectious lymph node enlargement from January 2008 to December 2012. To evaluate a useful strategy for the diagnosis of infectious lymphadenitis, specimens were cultured and subjected to molecular assays. Histologic analysis was done when possible. A tota

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Optic neuritis (ON) is characterized by sudden and rapid impairment of vision. Bartonella henselae is a known aetiological agent of cat scratch disease (CSD), which is a common cause of neuroretinitis, the least common type of optic neuritis. The present study was carried out to determine the microbiological aetiology of optic neuritis in patients attending a tertiary care eye hospital in north India, which was later confirmed with molecular characterization.
METHODS: Of the 50 patients suffering from optic neuritis reported to the Ophthalmology OPD of a tertiary care

Human pathogenic Bartonella henselae cause cat scratch disease and vasculoproliferative disorders. An important pathogenicity factor of B. henselae is the trimeric autotransporter adhesin Bartonella adhesin A (BadA) which is modularly constructed and consists of a head, a long and repetitive neck-stalk module with 22 repetitive neck/stalk repeats and a membrane anchor. The BadA head is crucial for bacterial adherence to host cells, binding to several extracellular matrix proteins and for the induction of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion. Here, we analysed the biological role

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease (CSD), a self-limiting condition characterized by a subacute regional lymphadenopathy that may develop into disseminated bartonellosis in immunocompromised subjects. Mice experimentally infected with B. henselae display typical liver and spleen granulomas rich in T cells and macrophages. So far there are no data on the interaction between bartonellae and macrophages. In order to clarify this topic, we investigated the interaction of B. henselae with J774, a mouse macrophage cell line. Analysis of bacterial uptake by functional a

Objective To determine the clinical significance of sputum Pasteurella multocida in adults with structural lung disease by operationally distinguishing infection from colonization and describing outcomes of pathogen-directed therapy. Methods We performed a single-center, retrospective case study. Infection was defined a priori by new or worsening lower-respiratory symptoms at the time of culture, supported by inflammatory or radiologic changes; isolation without symptoms was classified as colonization. Two pulmonologists blinded to the clinical data reviewed the chest computed tomography scans

Microscopic colitis, a diagnosis under the umbrella term of inflammatory bowel disease, is a prevalent cause of watery diarrhea, often with symptoms of urgency and bloating, typically observed in older adults aged ≥ 60 years. Its incidence has been reported to exceed those of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease in some geographical areas. Although nonpathognomonic endoscopic abnormalities, including changes of the vascular mucosal pattern; mucosal erythema; edema; nodularity; or mucosal defects, e.g., "cat scratches" have been reported, a colonoscopy is typically macroscopically normal. Systemic Bartonella henselae infection, also known as cat-scratch disease (CSD), presents a diagnostic challenge due to the variability of clinical manifestations and the potential for serological cross-reactivity with other organisms. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and imaging characteristics of pediatric patients diagnosed with systemic B. henselae infection, to improve understanding and facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment. We conducted a 10-year retrospective study at the "Louis Turcanu" Children's Emergency Hospital and private

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of antibodies against zoonotic agents in employees of the zoological garden of Vienna, Schönbrunn, Austria. Sixty out of 120 employees participated in the study. In 97% of them antibodies to at least one zoonotic agent were identified. Only two participants were free of antibodies to the zoonotic agents tested. The following seroprevalences (in brackets) were obtained: Viral zoonotic (and potentially zoonotic) agents: Influenzavirus A/H1N1 (58%), Influenzavirus A/H3N2 (85%), Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (13%), Encephalomyocarditis v

A real-time PCR assay was developed to diagnose and identify the causative agents of suspected mycobacterial lymphadenitis. Primers and probes for the real-time PCR were designed on the basis of the internal transcribed spacer sequence, enabling the recognition of the genus Mycobacterium and the species Mycobacterium avium and M. tuberculosis. The detection limit for the assay was established at 1,100 CFU/ml of pus, and the specificity tests showed no false-positive reaction with other mycobacterial species and other pathogens causing lymphadenitis. From 67 children with suspected mycobacteria
