Development and Validation of a Novel Risk Calculator to Predict Sub-optimal HIV Outcomes Among Pregnant and Postpartum Women with HIV in Kenya.

No tool currently exists to predict the cumulative risk of suboptimal clinical outcomes among pregnant and postpartum women with HIV (PPWH). This study sought to develop and validate a parsimonious risk calculator capable of predicting disengagement from care and HIV treatment failure among PPWH. We created the risk calculator using data from 1,331 PPWH from Southwestern Kenya (Homabay, Migori, and Kisumu Counties) in the Mother Infant Visit Adherence and Treatment Engagement Trial. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression retained the most predictive variables from

Sex and Gender Differences in Weight-Related Biopsychosocial Factors Among Adults Receiving Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is the most efficacious treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). MOUD uptake and continuation may be impacted by health concerns, including weight gain, and social factors, such as food insecurity, that vary between men and women. This study aimed to describe sex and gender differences in body mass index (BMI) and weight-related demographic, psychosocial, and clinical characteristics among adults receiving buprenorphine for OUD. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from a cross-sectional survey and prospective medical record review

Prevalence and social determinants of anxiety and depression among adults in Ghana: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and depression pose a significant global health challenge, especially affecting adults in low-income and middle-income countries. In many low-income and middle-income countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, social determinants such as access to affordable health services, conflict, food insecurity, and poverty may be associated with the prevalence of anxiety and depression, further contributing to health disparities. To mitigate the burden of anxiety and depression in sub-Saharan Africa, it is essential to develop country-level tailored mental health policies an

Prevalence and risk factors of perinatal depression among mothers and fathers in Pakistan: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health issues affect approximately 10% of women in high-income countries and 30% in low- or middle-income countries. This review aims to determine the prevalence of perinatal depression among mothers and fathers in Pakistan and identify associated risk factors. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. We included quantitative studies on the prevalence or incidence of maternal and paternal perinatal depression, including antenatal or postnatal depression

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children Enrollment and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Among Nulliparous Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between changes in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) enrollment during pregnancy from 2016 to 2019 and rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes in U.S. counties in 2019. METHODS: We conducted a serial, cross-sectional ecologic study at the county level using National Center for Health Statistics natality data from 2016 to 2019 of nulliparous individuals eligible for WIC. The exposure was the change in county-level WIC enrollment from 2016 to 2019 (increase [more than 0%] vs no change or decrease [0% or less]). Outc

Effects of prenatal small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements on pregnancy, birth, and infant outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomized controlled trials in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition during pregnancy increases the risk of giving birth to a small vulnerable newborn. Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNSs) contain both macro- and micronutrients and can help prevent multiple nutritional deficiencies. OBJECTIVES: We examined the effects of SQ-LNSs provided during pregnancy compared with 1) iron and folic acid or standard of care (IFA/SOC) or 2) multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) and identified characteristics that modified the estimates of effects of SQ-LNSs on birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a 2-stage meta-analysis o

Association of COVID-19-related perceptions and experiences with depression and anxiety in Ugandan caregivers of young children with malaria and iron deficiency: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of young children may have been particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its negative impacts on their housing, finances, and childcare demands. This study explored the associations between COVID-19-related experiences and symptoms of depression and anxiety among Ugandan caregivers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 Ugandan caregivers of young children aged 6-59 months with uncomplicated malaria and iron deficiency (N = 85) and without malaria or anemia (N = 15) who were enrolled in the Optimizing Iron Status

Senescence and extracellular vesicles: novel partners in vascular amyloidosis.

OBJECTIVES: School disengagement (SD) is associated with mental health, educational, and behavioral challenges. This study explored temporal changes in SD and SD rates among children with mental health conditions (MHCs) in a representative sample of US children aged 6 to 17 years from 2018 to 2022 and identified SD correlates. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) data from 2018 and 2019 (pre-pandemic), 2020 (lockdown), and 2021 and 2022 (intra-pandemic) (N = 136 576). Prevalence and Social-Structural Correlates of Gender-Based Violence Against Women Living With HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Violence experienced by cisgender (cis) and gender minority women living with HIV is known to be high. More work is needed to better understand how to support women living with HIV who have experienced violence. The objectives of this study are therefore to identify the prevalence and correlates of violence by any perpetrator among women living with HIV in a Canadian setting. Data were drawn from 9 years (January, 2010 to February, 2019) of a longitudinal community-based open cohort study of 350+ cis and trans women living with HIV who were living and/or accessed care in Metro Vancouver, Canad

Comorbid anxiety and depression: Prevalence and associated factors among pregnant women in Arba Minch zuria district, Gamo zone, southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal anxiety and depression are major health problems all over the world. The negative sequela of prenatal comorbid anxiety and depression (CAD) has been suggested to be higher than that of anxiety or depression alone. CAD increases the odds of preterm birth, low birth weight, prolonged labor, operative deliveries, postpartum psychiatric disorders and long term cognitive impairment for the newborn. Despite its significant ill consequences, there is a dearth of studies in low-and middle-income countries. So far, to the best of our knowledge, no study assessed the prevalence of

Implementation of multisectoral interventions to improve nutrition in Uganda: stakeholder perceptions and experiences.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa remains a persistent public health challenge driven by food insecurity, inadequate health services, suboptimal caregiving practices, and weak livelihoods. Addressing these complex determinants requires multisectoral interventions that integrate nutrition, health, agriculture, and community development. The Uganda Community Connector (UCC) programme was designed to address these challenges through integrated, community-based approaches. This study explored stakeholder perceptions of UCC implementation strategies using the RE-AIM framework. METHODS
