Identifying High-Risk Pediatric Patients and Parents Requiring In-Person Preoperative Consultation Following a WeChat-Based Preoperative Education Program.

PURPOSE: Preoperative anxiety is a common challenge in pediatric surgery. WeChat-based preoperative education offers a scalable solution, but a one-size-fits-all digital approach may not adequately meet the needs of all families. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of children and parents who still reported a need for an in-person preoperative consultation after completion of a standard WeChat-based program and to determine the independent factors associated with higher anxiety scores. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, post-intervention observational study. METHODS: The study involved

Combining Exergame Training with Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Study Assessing the Effect on Neuronal Structure/Function in the Elderly Brain.

A common problem in the older population is the risk of falling and related injury, immobility, and reduced survival. Age-related neuronal changes, e.g., decline in gray-and white-matter, affect neuronal, cognitive, and motor functioning. The improvement of these factors might decrease fall events in elderly. Studies showed that administration of video game-based physical exercise, a so-called exergame, or omega-3 fatty acid (FA) may improve motor and/or cognitive functioning through neuronal changes in the brain of older adults. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of a combination

Desires and Needs for Quitting Both e-Cigarettes and Cigarettes Among Young Adults: Formative Qualitative Study Informing the Development of a Smartphone Intervention for Dual Tobacco Cessation.

BACKGROUND: Dual use of both e-cigarettes and cigarettes is popular among young adults and may lead to greater nicotine dependence and additive adverse health effects than single-product use. However, existing cessation programs target quitting either e-cigarettes or cigarettes, highlighting a need for interventions to help young adults quit both products (ie, dual tobacco cessation). OBJECTIVE: This formative study is part of a larger project to develop a smartphone intervention for dual tobacco cessation among young adults. This study aimed to (1) explore desires for and experiences with qu

Combining physical therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to improve balance confidence and community participation in people with unilateral transtibial amputation who use lower limb prostheses: a study protocol for a randomized sham-control clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Low balance confidence is a prevalent yet overlooked issue among people who use lower limb prostheses (LLP) that can diminish community integration and quality of life. There is a critical need to develop rehabilitation programs that specifically target balance confidence in people who use LLP. Previous research has shown that multicomponent interventions including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques and exercise are feasible and effective for improving balance confidence in older adults. Therefore, a cognitive behavioral-physical therapy (CBPT) intervention was developed

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic internet use (PIU; otherwise known as Internet Addiction) is a growing problem in modern societies. There is scarce knowledge of the demographic variables and specific internet activities associated with PIU and a limited understanding of how PIU should be conceptualized. Our aim was to identify specific internet activities associated with PIU and explore the moderating role of age and gender in those associations. METHODS: We recruited 1749 participants aged 18 and above via media advertisements in an Internet-based survey at two sites, one in the US, and one

Assessing Head Acceleration Events in Female Community Rugby Union Players: A Cohort Study Using Instrumented Mouthguards.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of women's rugby union has underscored the need for female-specific player welfare protocols, particularly regarding the risk of head injuries. Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) play a vital role in gathering comprehensive data on head acceleration events (HAEs), including their frequency, magnitude, and spatial distribution during games and training. By doing so, iMGs offer valuable context for circumstances in women's matches that may increase player risk. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to contextualize HAEs in female community rugby players using instrumented mouthg

BACKGROUND: Teaching maxillofacial traumatology is challenging, as it requires not only theoretical knowledge but also advanced visuospatial skills. Conventional educational resources such as CT scans and diagrams offer limited support for understanding complex three-dimensional fracture patterns. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a promising educational tool, yet its pedagogical impact in maxillofacial surgery remains insufficiently investigated. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted at three French medical faculties (Nice, Tou

Efficacy of a neuroscience informed psychoeducation intervention on cognitive, emotional, and substance use outcomes in college students: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite revolutionary advances in understanding the neurobiology of substance use, these insights have not been translated into effective prevention or intervention programs. To address this gap, we developed Neuroscience-Informed Psychoeducation for Addiction (NIPA), a mobile app designed to enhance metacognitive awareness, increase cognitive resilience, and promote neurocognitive skills for stress coping and substance misuse prevention. NIPA targets key cognitive functions-attention, memory, cognitive flexibility, and decision-making -by integrating neuroscience-based psychoedu

Brain-computer interface relieves chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) includes negative sensations that remain a major chronic problem for cancer survivors. Previous research demonstrated that neurofeedback (a closed-loop brain-computer interface [BCI]) was effective at treating CIPN versus a waitlist control (WLC). The authors' a priori hypothesis was that BCI would be superior to placebo feedback (placebo control [PLC]) and to WLC in alleviating CIPN and that changes in brain activity would predict symptom report. METHODS: Randomization to one of three conditions occurred between November 2014 and

Unique behavioral strategies in visuomotor learning: Hope for the non-learner.

The existence of individual differences in motor learning capability is well known but the behaviors or strategies that contribute to this variability have been vastly understudied. What performance characteristics distinguish an expert level performer from individuals who experience little to no success, those labeled non-learners? We designed a rule-based visuomotor task which requires identification (discovery) and then exploitation of specific explicit and implicit task components that requires a specific movement pattern, the task rule, for goal achievement. When participants first attemp

Cognitive processing characteristics of the advantage of assistant referee offside decision-making: evidence from eye movements and ERPs.

BACKGROUND: Offside decision-making in football is prone to misjudgments that significantly affect match outcomes. Although video assistant referee (VAR) technology has been introduced, it may cause game interruptions and is subject to technical limitations; thus, improving assistant referees' on-field judgment is crucial. Previous studies have focused on behavioral differences in refereeing decisions, but the cognitive processing characteristics and neural mechanisms underlying the decision-making advantage of expert assistant referees remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 26 assistant referee

3-Dimensional Biomechanics of Noncontact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Male Professional Soccer Players.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury causation in soccer has improved over the past decades. Bidimensional video analyses have significantly augmented our awareness, representing to date the only practical method to describe injury biomechanics. However, the extent of the problem continues to raise serious concerns. PURPOSE: To advance our understanding of the causal pathways leading to ACL injury with a large-scale reconstruction of 3-dimensional (3D) whole-body joint kinematics of injuries that occurred to male elite soccer players, as well as
