Feedstock-Dependent Water Sorption and Retention of Citric-Acid-Modified Lignocellulosic Biogels Under Simulated Climatic Conditions.

Increasing drought frequency and irregular precipitation patterns highlight the need for sustainable soil water management. In this study, lignocellulosic biogels were prepared from Norway spruce and silver birch sawdust and from rapeseed and poppy straw using a 10 wt.% citric acid solution, with a fixed addition of 5 mL of 80% lactic acid as a processing modifier. Two formulations differing in the volume of citric acid solution (180 or 250 mL per 12 g of dry feedstock), and consequently in both the liquid-to-solid ratio and absolute citric acid dose, were evaluated. Biomass chemical compositi

Beyond the floodwaters: women's multidimensional vulnerability to flood disasters - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Flood disasters, intensified by climate change, are increasing in frequency and severity globally, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, particularly women. Women's vulnerability during flood disasters extends beyond biological or physical differences and is shaped by broader social, economic, cultural, and institutional conditions. However, synthesised evidence on women's vulnerabilities in flood contexts remains limited. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta

Regional variability in skin water and heat loss during hemodialysis indicates site-specific skin barrier regulation.

Although the kidney is established as a key organ for water and electrolyte homeostasis, emerging evidence highlights the skin as a crucial regulator of whole-body water balance. We hence hypothesized that acute fluid removal during hemodialysis (HD) impacts skin barrier function, assessed by measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and heat loss. In our prospective, monocentric SkInDialysis study, 11 patients undergoing maintenance HD (27% females; mean age, 55.4 ± 13.3 yr) underwent measurements of TEWL, skin hydration, temperature, and heat loss at three sites (forearm, face, and tr

Impact of Long-Term Drainage on Carbon Fluxes in the High-Latitude Permafrost Region.

With Arctic amplification, hydrological conditions in Arctic permafrost regions are expected to change substantially, which can have a strong impact on carbon budgets. To date, detailed mechanisms remain highly uncertain due to the lack of continuous observational data. Considering the large carbon storage in these regions, understanding these processes becomes crucial for estimating the future trajectory of global climate change. This study presents findings from 8 years of continuous eddy-covariance measurements of carbon dioxide ( CO 2 $$ {\mathrm{CO}}_2 $$ ) and methane ( CH 4 $$ {\

Environmental sustainability of clinical laboratories: A scoping review.

IntroductionThe climate crisis presents a complex and growing challenge for healthcare systems around the world. Healthcare systems can contribute to substantial global emissions, with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) alone responsible for 4%-5% of the country's total carbon footprint. A wide range of clinical disciplines have already begun to assess and design interventions to tackle this issue. However, clinical and diagnostic laboratories remain underexplored.AimsWhat studies have been undertaken to assess and improve the environmental impact of clinical laboratories?MethodsThis scopi

Micronutrient bioavailability: concepts, influencing factors, and strategies for improvement.

The human diet provides a range of macronutrients and micronutrients, which are metabolized for energy and used to support all aspects of life. The extent to which these nutrients are absorbed in a form that can be used by metabolic processes, or stored for later use, is termed bioavailability. Certain dietary factors increase the bioavailability of micronutrients: bioavailability can be enhanced by different vitamin forms (e.g., calcifediol is more bioavailable than cholecalciferol; methylfolate is more bioavailable than folic acid), and by the food matrix and nutrient interactions (e.g., fat

Rickettsia spp. in finnish ixodid ticks.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia spp. are intracellular, arthropod-borne bacteria pathogenic to humans and animals. The clinical manifestations of rickettsial infections range from mild to severe, but diagnosis is sometimes missed owing to mild symptoms or empirical antibiotic treatment for suspected tick-borne diseases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Rickettsia spp. in ticks across Finland, explore possible regional variations, identify the infecting Rickettsia species, and assess rickettsial exposure of certain human patients. METHODS: We analysed 5101 ticks from 20 locations, collec

Air pollution, traffic noise, mental health, and cognitive development: A multi-exposure longitudinal study of London adolescents in the SCAMP cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that air pollution and noise may have detrimental psychological impacts, but there are few studies evaluating adolescents, ground-level ozone exposure, multi-exposure models, or metrics beyond outdoor residential exposure. This study aimed to address these gaps. METHODS: Annual air pollution and traffic noise exposure at home and school were modelled for adolescents in the Greater London SCAMP cohort (N=7555). Indoor, outdoor and hybrid environments were modelled for air pollution. Cognitive and mental health measures were self-completed at two timepoi

Peculiarities of Q fever and human cases reported so far in the Czech Republic.

INTRODUCTION: Q fever is a zoonosis with a worldwide occurrence. Coxiella burnetii infection is most commonly transmitted by inhalation of air containing contaminated dust in cow, sheep and goat farming areas. The other modes of transmission are alimentary route (ingestion) and through sucking ticks. We set ourselves the goal of presenting a descriptive analysis of cases of Q fever in the Czech Republic (CZ) and former Czechoslovakia and draw attention to this often-overlooked issue. METHODS: Summary of available information about Q fever was processed, and a narrative search of published cas

Reliability and validity of 30-15 intermittent fitness test for cardiorespiratory fitness assessment among infantry members of Slovenian armed forces: A study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) testing is routinely performed by most armed and tactical forces around the world as part of their recruitment process for new members or simply as an annual examination of their personnel. A 2-mile run (2MR) test is among the most commonly used. However, as it is performed outdoors, weather, climate, and terrain can influence the results and often limit the maximum performance. Also, this test has been shown to be difficult for individuals because the pacing strategy is self-paced. As such, it does not reflect the real situation on the battlefield

The Evidence for a Causal Link Between Disease and Damaging Behavior in Pigs.

Damaging behaviors (DB) such as tail and ear biting are prevalent in pig production and reduce welfare and performance. Anecdotal reports suggest that health challenges increase the risk of tail-biting. The prevalence of tail damage and health problems show high correlations across batches within and between farms. There are many common risk factors for tail-biting and health problems, notably respiratory, enteric and locomotory diseases. These include suboptimal thermal climate, hygiene, stocking density and feed quality. The prevalence of tail damage and health problems also show high correl

Effects of vine top shading on the accumulation of C6/C9 compounds in 'Cabernet Sauvignon' (Vitis vinifera L.) grape berries in northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is an arid and semi-arid region with low rainfall and strong sunlight; thus, grape berries in this region accumulate sugar content rapidly, and the ripening process is shorter than that in other regions. Although previous studies illustrated that altered sunlight conditions could influence the aroma profiles of grape berries, less attention has been paid to the effect of vine top shading on volatile compounds under a dry-hot climate. RESULT: We focused on the effects of vine top shading on the concentrations of linolenic and linoleic acids, as

Measurement of Volatile Compounds for Real-Time Analysis of Soil Microbial Metabolic Response to Simulated Snowmelt.

Snowmelt dynamics are a significant determinant of microbial metabolism in soil and regulate global biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nutrients by creating seasonal variations in soil redox and nutrient pools. With an increasing concern that climate change accelerates both snowmelt timing and rate, obtaining an accurate characterization of microbial response to snowmelt is important for understanding biogeochemical cycles intertwined with soil. However, observing microbial metabolism and its dynamics non-destructively remains a major challenge for systems such as soil. Microbial volatile com

Multiscale physical background to an exceptional harmful algal bloom of Dinophysis acuta in a fjord system.

Dinophysis acuta produces diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX). It blooms in thermally-stratified shelf waters in late summer in temperate to cold temperate latitudes. Despite its major contribution to shellfish harvesting bans, little effort has been devoted to study its population dynamics in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017-2018, mesoscale distribution of harmful algal species (75 monitoring stations) revealed the initiation (late spring) and seasonal growth of a dense D. acuta population in the Aysén region, with maximal values at Puyuhuapi Fjord (PF). Vertical phy

Nine year trends of dengue virus infection in Mumbai, Western India.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue virus (DENV) causes a wide range of diseases in humans, from acute febrile illness Dengue fever (DF) to life-threatening Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or Dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Factors believed to be responsible for spread of Dengue virus infection include explosive population growth, unplanned urban overpopulation with inadequate public health systems, poor standing water and vector control, climate changes and increased international recreational, business, military travel to endemic areas. All of these factors must be addressed to control the spread of Dengue and

Aboriginal-mainstream partnerships: exploring the challenges and enhancers of a collaborative service arrangement for Aboriginal clients with substance use issues.

BACKGROUND: Partnerships between different health services are integral to addressing the complex health needs of vulnerable populations. In Australia, partnerships between Aboriginal community controlled and mainstream services can extend health care options and improve the cultural safety of services. However, although government funding supports such collaborations, many factors can cause these arrangements to be tenuous, impacting the quality of health care received. Research was undertaken to explore the challenges and enhancers of a government initiated service partnership between an Abo

Air emissions from sour-gas processing plants and dairy-cattle reproduction in Alberta, Canada.

The dispersion of air pollutants from all 231 licensed sour-gas processing plants in Alberta, Canada, was modeled on a monthly basis over a 10-year period (1985-1994). Exposure estimates for sulfur dioxide (SO(2)-used as a surrogate for exposure to combusted emissions) then were assigned to 1382 provincial dairy farms using a geographical-information system. Individual average and peak exposure for periods prior to each of 15 months of age and conception (four exposure-averaging periods for each of two dispersion models) were estimated for 163,988 primiparous female dairy-cattle between 1986 a
