Influence of Diltiazem on Fathead Minnows Across Dissolved Oxygen Gradients.

Water resources in many arid to semi-arid regions are stressed by population growth and drought. Growing populations and climatic changes are influencing contaminant and water chemistry dynamics in urban inland waters, where flows can be dominated by, or even dependent on, wastewater effluent discharge. In these watersheds, interacting stressors such as dissolved oxygen and environmental contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals) have the potential to affect fish physiology and populations. Recent field observations from our group identified the calcium channel blocker (CCB) diltiazem in fish plasma

Avian trichomonosis mortality events in band-tailed pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata) in California during winter 2014-2015.

Avian trichomonosis is an upper digestive tract disease of birds typically caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae. In California (U.S.A), trichomonosis is known to cause periodic epidemics in the Pacific Coast band-tailed pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata monolis), a migratory upland game bird. We summarize the mortality events that occurred during winter 2014-2015 including the duration, estimated mortality, pathology, and genetic identity of infecting parasites. Increased mortality was reported from locations in 25 counties between November 2014 and June 2015. Based on reports, car

Favorable fragmentation: river reservoirs can impede downstream expansion of riparian weeds.

River valleys represent biologically rich corridors characterized by natural disturbances that create moist and barren sites suitable for colonization by native riparian plants, and also by weeds. Dams and reservoirs interrupt the longitudinal corridors and we hypothesized that this could restrict downstream weed expansion. To consider this "reservoir impediment" hypothesis we assessed the occurrences and abundances of weeds along a 315-km river valley corridor that commenced with an unimpounded reach of the Snake River and extended through Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon reservoirs and dams

Epidemiology of West Nile virus: a silent epiornitic in Northern Delaware in 2007 without associated human cases.

ABSTRACT. We performed a 2-year longitudinal study (2006-2007) of West Nile virus (WNV) infections in wild birds, mosquitoes, and sentinel chickens at 6 WNV-endemic sites in northern Delaware. We determined virus infection rates of Culex pipiens and other mosquito vectors as well as seroprevalence and antibody titers of amplifying hosts. Endemicity status varied widely among the 6 sites based on 3 criteria-mosquito infections, sentinel chicken seropositivity, and wild bird seropositivity. A highly endemic site would display at least 2 of the 3 criteria during each year of the study, while a si

Genome-Wide Characterization of the Wheat Pum Gene Family and Heterologous Functional Analysis of TaPum-III-5b in Arabidopsis Under Salt Stress.

Pumilio (Pum)-family proteins are evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding proteins that regulate post-transcriptional processes; however, their specific functions in staple crops, for example, wheat (Triticum aestivum), remain poorly understood. We identified 56 TaPum genes and classified them into three phylogenetic subgroups (I-III). The larger TaPum family size in allohexaploid wheat was associated with retention of A-, B-, and D-subgenome homoeologs, segmental duplication, and tandem duplication. After separating homoeologous pairs, 17 segmental duplication pairs and five tandem duplication p

Assessing Future Maladaptation Risk in the Keystone Species Populus tremuloides.

Understanding the adaptive potential of widespread trees is critical for predicting species resilience under climate change and informing their conservation strategies. We assessed the genomic offset in Populus tremuloides Michx. (aspen) using 10,937 genotyping-by-sequencing derived, high-quality SNPs from 891 individuals sampled across the species' range, from Mexico to both the eastern and western regions of North America. Gradient forest models were applied using multiple SNP datasets and climate scenarios, with the genomic offset standardized by aspen population genetic clusters and ecolog

Convective storms alter bioaerosol populations through cold pools and precipitation.

Meteorology can alter bioaerosol properties, potentially enhancing their impact on public health and cloud microphysics. The BioAerosols and Convective Storms (BACS) study was conducted over May-June 2022 and 2023 in Northern Colorado and examines how convective storm processes such as precipitation and cold pools affect bioaerosol concentrations and properties, including pollen, fungal spores and bacterial endotoxin. The two seasons were vastly different climatologically, with drought-like conditions and greater endotoxin concentrations during 2022 and near record rainfall with higher fungal

Epichloë-the obligate mutualist protecting some commercially important temperate grasses from biotic and abiotic stresses.

The relationship between Epichloë fungal endophytes found in some temperate grasses spans the continuum from antagonistic to mutualistic. The predominant focus here is on those that form mutualistic associations with those temperate grasses of the New World due to their substantial economic impact. This review describes the evolutionary origin, discovery, lifestyle and life cycle of Epichloë as background to understand the close association between plant host and fungal endophyte. Many asexual Epichloë fungal endophytes are unique in being obligate mutualists, lacking a free-living stage in na

Nitric oxide interplay with hydrogen sulfide modulates gene expression and photosystem II function through enhanced antioxidant defense under PEG-induced osmotic stress in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Drought is one of the most detrimental abiotic stresses, severely constraining crop productivity on a global scale. Prolonged water deficits associated with climate change impair plant growth and contribute to substantial agricultural yield losses each year. In this study, we investigated the roles of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in mediating stress tolerance in common bean, integrating physiological, biochemical, and molecular analyses to elucidate their regulatory functions under simulated water-deficit conditions. PEG-induced osmotic stress significantly reduced plant growth

Genome-Wide Identification of the ZjWPR Gene Family in Chinese Jujube Provides Functional Insights into Its Response to Jujube Witches' Broom.

WPR (WEB1/PMI2-related) genes play a crucial role in regulating chloroplast movement and leaf coloration in plants. Previous studies have shown that these genes are implicated in leaf yellowing, both in Arabidopsis thaliana and in Paulownia fortunei following infection with Paulownia witches' broom. To investigate the functions of the ZjWPR genes in jujube, bioinformatics methods were employed to identify the ZjWPR gene family in jujube, analyze their protein physicochemical properties, gene structure, evolutionary relationships, and cis-acting elements in this study. The results revealed that

Environmental implications of drilling mud and cuttings disposal on land degradation in oil-producing regions of Iraq.

Land degradation represents a major environmental challenge in Iraq, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions experiencing intensive oil and gas development. Among the various anthropogenic drivers, drilling wastes generated during oil well construction remain an underinvestigated contributor to soil degradation and environmental deterioration. These wastes, including drilling muds and drill cuttings, contain complex mixtures of clays, chemical additives, hydrocarbons, salts, and trace metals and are commonly disposed of through on-site burial practices. This study develops an integrated ana

A trade-off between shelf-life mitigation and nutritional retention: a persistent challenge in pearl millet.

Pearl millet serves as a vital cereal crop for ensuring food and nutritional security, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions known as "Grains of God," due to its remarkable tolerance to drought and other adverse environmental conditions. In addition to its climate resilience, pearl millet possesses superior nutritional quality, being enriched with essential amino acids, dietary fiber, iron, zinc, and several health-promoting bioactive compounds, thereby making it an important component of sustainable and nutritious food systems. However, a major limitation associated with the commercial u

Nonlinear environmental controls and threshold effects on dust events in Iran's arid and semi-arid regions.

Wind erosion and dust storms are among the main causes of air pollution and represent one of the most significant environmental threats in the arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. This study was conducted to identify the controlling environmental factors and to predict the monthly frequency of dust events in these regions over the period 1990–2019. Relevant environmental predictors were selected using feature selection techniques. Several machine learning models were developed and evaluated using a train–test framework. The contribution of environmental factors to this goal was measured using S

Improving Primary Healthcare: Applying Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) Principles to Lebanon's Vision 2030.

Background/Objectives: While Lebanon's Vision 2030 prioritizes strengthening Lebanon's chronically constrained, fragmented, and shocked primary healthcare system, implementation is hindered by weak sensing mechanisms, misaligned spatial distribution, and poorly integrated referral pathways. This study develops a preliminary, context-specific, systems-level healthcare policy assessment and framework for primary healthcare reform by applying biomimicry principles derived from the drought-resistant root architecture of grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Methods: Publicly available data from the Lebanese

MUSEUM SPECIMENS OF WESTERN DIAMOND-BACKED RATTLESNAKES (VIPERIDAE: CROTALUS ATROX) REVEAL TRENDS IN BODY SIZE, DIET, AND ENDOPARASITES OVER THE LAST 75 YEARS.

Climate projections for the Southwestern United States predict increases in temperature, drought intensity and frequency, and wildfire intensity and frequency. Such climatic change is expected to impact communities and species of the region, including Crotalus atrox (western diamond-backed rattlesnake) and its helminth communities. We hypothesized that C. atrox in New Mexico has experienced measurable changes in body size, diet composition, and helminth communities over the past century. We examined specimens of C. atrox from 3 time periods: 1947-1960 (1950s, n = 34), 1980-1990 (1980s, n = 53)

Climate and other environmental factors predict tick abundance and Lyme cases in Minnesota one and two years in advance.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors, like weather and host abundance influence tick populations which in turn affect tickborne disease in endemic regions. It is important to understand how these factors are associated with tick abundance, and whether they can predict disease. We assessed associations between environmental factors, tick abundance, and human Lyme disease cases in the same year and with one- and two-year lags in Minnesota. In parallel, we compare conventional analytical methods with a novel machine learning approach to evaluate their relative strengths and potential for integration

Evaluating the combined effects of climate and land use change on hydrological response in a mixed land use watershed.

Communities increasingly face challenges from changing hydrological patterns caused by the combined effects of climate change and land use/land cover (LULC) change. However, the hydrological response of mixed land use watersheds to these combined effects remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we developed an automated platform to retrieve projected climate and LULC data and input them into the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus (SWAT+). These models were coupled to assess the impacts of climate and LULC change on the Stroubles Creek watersh
