BACKGROUND: The three-dimensional relationships of the bones in the foot in a flatfoot deformity are difficult to assess with standard radiographs. CT scans demonstrate these relationships but are typically made in a nonweightbearing mode. Our objective was to assess the use of a weightbearing CT apparatus to image the feet in patients with severe flexible pes planus deformities and to better define the anatomical changes that occur.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A specialized device was designed and constructed to simulate weightbearing to the feet during CT examination. Eighteen normal feet and 30

We present a clinical and radiological retrospective study of 30 patients (51 feet) with valgus deformity of the feet who had three different types of subtalar extraarticular and intraarticular arthrodesis. Children with cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, and agenesis of the corpus callosum associated with progressive polyneuropathy were studied. The results were considered excellent and satisfactory in 73% of the feet. The combined Grice-Green-Batchelor procedure gave the best results, with 84% excellent and satisfactory results, with bony union in 96% of the feet. Weight-bearing films of the

BACKGROUND: The only classification of Müller-Weiss disease (MWD) is based primarily on Méary's talo-first metatarsal angle. It describes increasing sag of the medial longitudinal arch with greater degrees of compression and fragmentation of the navicular. Purportedly, the talar head pushes the subtalar joint into varus and drives the medial pole of the navicular medially, as it protrudes inferiorly and laterally. Its authors stipulated heel varus as a pre-requisite, coining the term 'paradoxical pes planus varus' to define heel varus and flatfoot as hallmark deformities of the condition.

BACKGROUND: Children and young people with symptomatic pes planus (flat feet) often seek treatment from healthcare professionals. There are various treatment options, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence about which is most effective.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of prefabricated orthoses, plus exercise and advice, compared with exercise and advice alone on physical function, measured using the physical domain of the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire for Children, among children with symptomatic pes planus.

OBJECTIVE: Pes planovalgus is the most common foot deformity seen in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). There are several different treatment modalities to treat this condition. Single or double calcaneal osteotomies, extra-articular arthrodesis, calcaneo-cuboido-cuneiform osteotomy, intraarticular arthrodesis, and arthroereisis are some of these modalities. Currently, there is insufficient information to determine the most effective treatment approach for pes planovalgus in children with CP. The aim of this study is to show the short to mid-term results of the new technique which combines cal

The aim of this study was to determine the association, if any, between foot posture and dental malocclusions in the anteroposterior plane, in children. The study population consisted of 189 children (95 boys and 94 girls) aged 6 to 9 years. In every case, previous informed consent was requested and obtained from the parent/guardian and the study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Málaga (CEUMA 26/2015H).This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional analysis is based on a study population (STROBE). Qualified personnel conducted a podiatric and dental examination of eac

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of flexible flat feet in children was reported to be up to 20% in previous studies. However, the role of foot type in the development of musculoskeletal injuries is less clear, particularly in children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the joint moment asymmetry in children with flexible flat feet and healthy matched control subjects.
METHODS: Fourteen male children with flexible flat feet and 15 healthy control subjects served as the sample of the study. Three dimensional kinematics and kinetic data were collected using a Vicon camera

BACKGROUND: Increased navicular drop (NDro) and navicular drift (NDri) are associated with musculoskeletal pathology in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate navicular motion in children, with respect to foot posture, and identify altered patterns of motion that demonstrate midfoot dysfunction. Navicular motion in different activities was evaluated as well as the role of flexibility and body mass index (BMI).
METHODS: Twenty-five children with flatfeet and 26 with neutral feet (age range, 8-15) underwent gait analysis using a 12-camera Vicon MX system (Vicon, UK). Navicular motion

INTRODUCTION: Subtalar arthroereisis corrects childhood and adult reducible valgus flat-foot in certain indications. Inserting an expansion screw in the sinus tarsi simultaneously corrects the calcaneal valgus of the talocalcaneal divergence and first-ray pronation if these are reducible. The displacement induced in the posterior subtalar joint (decoaptation, translation, rotation) is, however, poorly known. The present study involved arthroscopic assessment of posterior subtalar joint surface displacement during insertion of a talocalcaneal arthroereisis screw, with the hypothesis that displa

Double fusion (i.e., fusion of the subtalar and talonavicular joint) represents a modification of triple arthrodesis preserving integrity of the calcaneocuboidal joint. Our aims were (1) to evaluate dynamic plantar pressure distribution in patients undergoing double arthrodesis, (2) to obtain a comparison of kinematic changes to healthy feet, (3) to evaluate the influence of radiographic alignment, and (4) to assess functional outcome. Sixteen feet (14 patients) treated by double fusion due to fixed planovalgus deformity were included. Dynamic plantar pressure distribution was assessed using a

Distal arthrogryposis (DA) is a group of rare, clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders primarily characterized by congenital contractures of the limb joints. Recently, mutations in genes encoding the fast-twitch skeletal muscle contractile myofibers complex, including troponin I2 (TNNI2), troponin T3 (TNNT3), tropomyosine 2 (TPM2), and embryonic myosin heavy chain 3 (MYH3), and the slow-twitch skeletal muscle myosin binding protein C1 (MYBPC1) were confirmed to cause DA1, DA2A, and DA2B. DA2B, or Sheldon-Hall syndrome (SHS; MIM 601680), is intermediate to DA1 and DA2A, or Freeman-Sh

Trichorhinophalangeal type I (TRPS I) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by variable clinical expression of sparse and slow-growing hair, pear-shaped nose, elongated philtrum, and bone deformities, including cone-shaped epiphyses of the phalanges and short stature. We describe three members of a family who consulted us because of slow-growing scalp hair with craniofacial and radiological features typical of TRPS I.

Middle facet talocalcaneal coalition is often associated with a rigid pes planovalgus. In the presence of calcaneal valgus, the fibula may come into contact with the lateral calcaneal wall during weight bearing, and develop a pseudoarticulation. Spurring, bone cysts, and other morphologic changes may concomitantly occur at the calcaneus and fibula, suggesting a pathological degenerative process. This association has not been previously studied in middle facet tarsal coalition and we term the condition calcaneal fibular remodeling, the focus of this investigation. To our knowledge, no study has

Metallic subtalar arthroereisis implants can require removal. Similarly configured bioabsorbable "interference screws" placed alternatively to metal implants may obviate removal. Radiographic imaging may show the location and sizing of the implant, and evaluate for implant degradation. Patients undergoing subtalar arthroereisis were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging (computed tomography in one patient) to measure the size of the tarsal canal. The tarsal canal length, along with medial height and lateral height, were assessed. The patient's actual implant size was also noted as well as

UNLABELLED: Minimally invasive subtalar screw-arthroereisis has gained interest in the correction of flat feet in children. Between 1990 and 2004, this technique was used on 152 children, 74 bilaterally, for a total of 226 feet. There were 82 boys and 70 girls, with an average age of 10.6+/-1.9 years. The results were good in 95.4% of cases, whilst there were complications in 4.6%. For well corrected feet, 55 screws have now been removed, on average 2.9 years after implantation. The indications for such treatment are: talipes calcaneovalgus, which develops into a flat foot (spontaneous correct

The authors present a comparative review of cases concerning the results obtained in the treatment of idiopathic flat foot: the methods compared were Castaman exosinotarsal arthrorisis and Giannini endosinotarsal arthrorisis. Between 1990 and 1198 a total of 80 patients, of which 40 with calcaneo-stop, and 40 with Giannini screws, were submitted to surgery at the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". The clinical, radiographic and functional results were classified as good, fair and poor. The authors agree on the effectiveness of both methods based on

Arthroerisis of the subtalar joint can be a valuable tool for the foot and ankle surgeon in treating flexible pes planus deformity in adults, as well as in children. Whether by itself, or in conjunction with other procedures, such as Achilles tendon lengthening (to allow dorsiflexion to at least neutral), midfoot or hindfoot osteotomies (to correct significant bony deformities), and posterior tibial tendon advancements (with associated symptomatic accessory navicular), arthroerisis can be helpful to correct deformity. When compared with procedures that involve osteotomy or arthrodesis, there i
