Sub-inhibitory antibiotic exposure can alter biofilm architecture, but the effects on matrix mechanics remain poorly understood. Here, imipenem at half the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is shown to induce viscoelastic reinforcement and physical tolerance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) biofilms. Ten imipenem-resistant isolates from ready-to-eat foods were cultured with and without sub-inhibitory imipenem. Treated biofilms transitioned from smooth, flat colonies to rugose, wrinkled, hyper-hydrophobic architectures, with contact angle increasing from 37.5° to 90.2°. Capillary

Metamorphosis is a critical ontogenetic transition for marine bivalves, marking the shift from planktonic to benthic lifestyles, where successful transformation dictates survival. The razor clam Sinonovacula constricta is economically important; however, low larval metamorphosis rates remain a major bottleneck in seedling production. To elucidate the mechanisms governing this process, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis of S. constricta larvae at pre- and post-metamorphosis stages using Illumina sequencing. A total of 3701 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, in

The Pseudomonas syringae complex (Psc) is a group of globally distributed phytopathogens responsible for substantial agricultural losses. Although bacteriophage-based biocontrol has shown promise against Psc, no studies have examined phages targeting blueberry-tropic Psc lineages. Here, we isolated phages infecting Psc strains from diseased highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), and evaluated their suitability for biocontrol using a multi-stage screening pipeline incorporating host-range analysis, comparative genomics, environmental stability testing, in vitro antibacterial efficacy assays

The growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in cutaneous wound infections, represents a significant clinical and economic challenge. Biofilm formation by multidrug-resistant pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, often complicates healing and leads to therapeutic failure. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics due to their potent membrane-disrupting mechanism of action and lower propensity to induce resistance. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and in vivo efficac

BACKGROUND: A bacterial infection during wound healing remains one of the most common complications in wound care. It not only impedes the wound-healing process but can also result in chronic wounds, which contribute to increased morbidity and even mortality. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop effective wound dressings to reduce wound infections.

Corynebacterium striatum and Staphylococcus aureus are opportunistic pathogens that share ecological niches and are frequently co-isolated in healthcare-associated infections. They commonly exist as sessile populations organized within multi-species biofilms associated with medical devices. Sortase A (SrtA) plays a critical role in anchoring surface proteins in S. aureus, thereby influencing adhesion, colonization, and biofilm formation. This study evaluated the influence of C. striatum on the formation and stability of biofilms produced by wild-type and isogenic ΔsrtA mutant S. aureus on hydr

Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is an early pathogen isolated from the lungs of children with cystic fibrosis (CF). However, its role in the progression of CF lung infection is poorly understood. Additionally, whether it forms biofilms in the lungs of people with CF is an open question. The development of synthetic CF sputum media (SCFM) has given key insights into the microbiology of later CF pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, through replicating the chemical composition of CF sputum. However, the growth of NTHi in these media has not previously been repor

Biofilm formation and other virulence phenotypes under quorum sensing regulation play a vital role in the pathogenicity of Aeromonas hydrophila, triggering the emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) which increases fish mortality, environmental issues, and economic loss in aquaculture, necessitating the discovery of novel drugs to bypass standard antibiotics. Here, quorum quenching (QQ) may be a sustainable anti-virulent approach. β-Lactamase enzyme obtained from Chromohalobacter sp. strain D23 restricted violacein pigmentation in Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 by degrading C4-homoserine la

Elucidating the relationship between biofilm formation and specific antibiotic resistance is important for understanding resistance mechanisms. In this study, the antibiotic resistance profiles of 64 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) strains isolated from intensive care patients were determined using the VITEK-2 compact system, and their biofilm production ability was assessed using the microtiter plate method to investigate the relationship between the two. Additionally, the minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBEC) of vancomycin, linezolid, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and ci

Salads and herbs are important for a healthy diet but during their processing and packaging, they may be exposed to environmental contamination from foodborne pathogens. Of particular concern is Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe, found ubiquitously in the environment. L. monocytogenes can survive and grow under harsh conditions such as refrigeration temperatures, low oxygen or nutrient concentrations, which is why it is a problem in the fresh food supply chain. Infection with L. monocytogenes can result in listeriosis, potentially fatal in immunocompromised patients

Streptococcus mutans is a major pathogenic habitant of oral caries. Owing to its physiological and biochemical features, it prevails in the form of plaque biofilm together with another important mutans streptococci species, Streptococcus sobrinus. Both species are considered as initiators of cavity lesions, and biofilm is essential to the dental caries process. Compared with the planktonic populations, the biofilm form has higher resistance to environmental conditions and antibiotics. Dental plaques also secure the long-term survival of microorganisms and protection from any stress conditions.

The ongoing antimicrobial resistance crisis has incentivised research into alternative antibacterial and antibiofilm agents. One of them is plasma-activated water (PAW), which is produced by exposing water to a cold plasma discharge. This process generates a diverse array of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) with antimicrobial properties. Another intensively studied class of alternative antimicrobials are bacteriophages, attracting attention due to their specificity and strong antibacterial activity. As combinations of different types of antimicrobials are known to often exhibit s

Helicobacter pylori infections are still an important health problem and are directly related to the development of gastric ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma, mucosal lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and diabetes. At the same time, the number of substances/drugs effective against these bacteria is limited due to increasing resistance. Raw plant materials from various species of the Rubus genus-fruits and shoots-have shown antimicrobial activity in numerous studies against different bacteria, including H. pylori in a planktonic form. Research carried out on a model using fragments of intravenous infusions

Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients represent a therapeutic challenge due to antibiotic resistance. Repurposing existing drugs is a promising approach for identifying new antimicrobials. A crucial factor in successful drug repurposing is using assay conditions that mirror the site of infection. Here, the impact of growth conditions on the anti-P. aeruginosa activity of a library of 3386 compounds was evaluated. To this, after 24 h exposure, the survival rate of CF P. aeruginosa RP73 planktonic cells was assessed spectrophotometrically under "CF-like" (artifi
