OBJECTIVE: Recent studies from Asia and Northern Europe suggest that apart from alcohol intake and smoking, fundic gastric atrophy (FGA) may also increase the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, because of the wide geographic variation of this cancer and the changing prevalence of the Helicobacter pylori infection, these findings need to be confirmed in other ethnic groups. The aim of this case-control study was to investigate whether H. pylori infection and FGA carry an increased risk for OSCC.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: FGA was evaluated, by histology and serology, in 75

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated allergy/hypersensitivity clinical markers and their correlation with Helicobactor pylori infection in children and adults to analyze how early acquisition of H. pylori could modulate allergic disorder expression.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: H. pylori presence was assessed by the rapid urease test and histology of antrum biopsies in 165 patients. Skin tests, serum IgE, and two clinical allergy questionnaires were performed. Allergy severity was operationally defined using a combined score. Findings were correlated with H. pylori status and cytotoxin-associated gene A presenc

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are closely related pathogenic fungi. Cryptococcus neoformans is ecologically widespread and affects primarily immunocompromised patients, while C. gattii is traditionally found in tropical climates and has been reported to cause disease in immunocompetent patients. l-Canavanine glycine bromothymol blue (CGB) agar can be used to differentiate C. neoformans and C. gattii, but there are few reports of its performance in routine clinical practice. Growth of C. gattii on CGB agar produces a blue color, indicating the assimilation of glycine, while C.

During a Danish study on the prevalence of campylobacteria in pig abortions and food of animal origin, eight Gram-negative, slightly curved, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria were clustered by using amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis in a distinct phenon within the genus Arcobacter. In the present study, numerical analysis of whole-cell protein profiles also showed that all isolates clustered in a single group distinct from other recognized Arcobacter species. DNA-DNA hybridization among two representative strains exhibited a mean DNA-DNA relatedness value of 79 %. DNA-DNA hy

Nutrition and drugs are main environmental factors that affect metabolism. We performed metabolomics of urine from an 8-year-old patient (case 1) with epilepsy and an 11-year-old patient (case 2) with malignant lymphoma who was being treated with methotrexate. Both patients were receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). We used our diagnostic procedure consisting of urease pretreatment, partial adoption of stable isotope dilution, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) measurement and target analysis for 200 analytes including organic acids and amino acids. Surprisingly, their metaboli

Helicobacter pylori infection is the most common cause of gastritis, gastric ulcer and adenocarcinoma. It has proven difficult to cure because of its capability to develop strains resistant to antibiotics. The effect of three strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bovine colostral preparations on the adhesion of H. pylori NCTC 11637 on gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) cells and on the interleukin (IL)-8 production was studied. Before infection, H. pylori were pretreated with Lactobacillus plantarum MLBPL1, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactococcus lactis, or with a colostral preparation with or w

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Susceptibility to clarithromycin of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is caused by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the 23SrRNA gene. Allele specific primer-polymerase chain reaction (ASP-PCR) is one of the methods for determining SNPs, which can measure SNPs easily within a short period by PCR amplification alone without digestion with restriction enzymes. The aim of the present study was to develop the ASP-PCR assay for determining SNPs at positions 2,142 and 2,143 of the 23S rRNA gene of H. pylori.
METHODS: In total, 112 patients with H. pylori infection based o

PURPOSE: Primary orbital non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type extranodal marginal zone lymphoma. Chronic antigen stimulation is implicated as a causative agent in the development of some mature B-cell proliferations; for example, there are associations involving Helicobacter pylori with gastric or conjunctival MALT lymphoma and Chlamydia psittaci with ocular adnexal lymphoma. We examined the molecular signatures of H pylori and Chlamydia in eight orbital lymphomas.
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed on DNA extracted from microdissected

Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with pronounced infiltration of granulocytes and lymphocytes into the gastric mucosa, resulting in active chronic gastritis that may develop into duodenal ulcer disease or gastric adenocarcinoma. Infiltrating T cells play a major role in the pathology of these diseases, but the signals involved in recruitment of T cells from blood to H. pylori-infected tissues are not well understood. We therefore examined H. pylori-induced T-cell transendothelial migration (TEM). The Transwell system, employing a monolayer of human umbilical vein endothelial cells,

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection of Mongolian gerbils is an established model of gastric carcinogenesis, but gastric secretory aspects of this carcinogenesis have not been studied.
METHODS: The effects of single intragastric inoculation of gerbils with H. pylori strain (cagA+ vacA+, 5 x 10(6) CFU/ml) or vehicle (saline) were examined at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 30 weeks from inoculation. Gastric morphology, the presence of H. pylori using the rapid urease test, the density of H. pylori and 16S rRNA and the plasma gastrin and somatostatin were determined.
RESULTS: H. pylori was detected

The complications and management of long-term indwelling catheters used for urinary retention and incontinence were reviewed. Research evidence from 1992 - 2002 was located through searches of CINAHL (38 articles), and Medline (89 articles). Fifty studies were critiqued for this review. The most common complications of long-term indwelling catheters are bacteriuria, encrustation, and blockage. Less common is the prevalence of bacteremia and renal disease. Risk factors for bacteriuria include female gender, older age, and long-term indwelling catheter use. Urinary white blood cells are the best

From May 2001 to April 2003, various types of specimens from cattle, pigs, and chickens were collected and examined for the presence of methicillin (oxacillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). S. aureus was isolated and positively identified by using Gram staining, colony morphology, tests for coagulase and urease activities, and an API Staph Ident system. Among 1,913 specimens collected from the animals, 421 contained S. aureus; of these, 28 contained S. aureus resistant to concentrations of oxacillin higher than 2 micro g/ml. Isolates from 15 of the 28 specimens were positive by PCR f

BACKGROUND: Whether standard nutrition support is sufficient to compensate for mineral loss during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is not known.
METHODS: Adult men with traumatic injuries were recruited; one-half of recruits required CRRT for acute renal failure. All urine and effluent (from CRRT) were collected for 72 hours. Urine, effluent, and dialysate were analyzed for magnesium, calcium, and zinc using atomic absorption spectrometry. Urea nitrogen in blood, urine, and effluent were determined by measuring conductivity changes after the addition of urease. Blood was analyzed

Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is endemic worldwide. The proposed treatment is expensive and there are few reports regarding reinfection rates in Brazil. The aim of this study was to compare the eradication rates obtained with two therapeutic options and to evaluate reinfection one year after treatment. This was a prospective randomized trial with 55 patients. Thirty-nine patients had active duodenal ulcer (DU) and 16 non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD), and all tested positive for HP. Diagnosis was based on at least two positive tests: ultrarapid urease test, histology and/or culture. Patients were
