Concussion in professional football: biomechanics of the struck player--part 14.

OBJECTIVE: Impacts causing concussion in professional football were simulated in laboratory tests to determine collision mechanics. This study focuses on the biomechanics of concussion in the struck player. METHODS: Twenty-five helmet impacts were reconstructed using Hybrid III dummies. Head impact velocity, direction, and helmet kinematics-matched game video. Translational and rotational accelerations were measured in both players' heads; 6-axis upper neck responses were measured in all striking and five struck players. Head kinematics and biomechanics were determined for concussed players.

Virtual reality as a method of cognitive training of processing speed, working memory, and sustained attention in persons with acquired brain injury: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Acquired brain injury (ABI) often leads to persisting somatic, cognitive, and social impairments. Cognitive impairments of processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory are frequently reported and may negatively affect activities of daily living and quality of life. Rehabilitation efforts aiming to retrain these cognitive functions have often consisted of computerized training programs. However, few studies have demonstrated effects that transfer beyond the trained tasks. There is a growing optimism regarding the potential usefulness of virtual reality (VR) in cognitive

[Symptom variations in ADHD: importance of context, development and comorbidity].

Attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) is a common disorder in school-aged children and is associated with significant impairment in social and academic functioning. Its recognition is based on congruent information from different sources, because most ADHD children and adolescents are not completely aware of impairments caused by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Fluctuations in symptom expression may complicate the diagnosis: during clinical examination or tests sessions, ADHD symptoms may be less severe than usual or completely absent. This review examines variations in ADHD sym

A Tangible Multimodal Sensing Interface for Collaborative Task Engagement in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Cross-Sectional Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Social engagement is critical for the developmental progress of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While tangible technologies and serious games (SGs) show promise, a dual-purpose platform that both facilitates collaborative interaction and enables sensing of collaborative task engagement is required. Existing tangible interfaces often lack integrated sensing capabilities, while devices designed for complex input are typically not optimized for the sensory and interaction needs of this population. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present InteractiSense, a tangible prototyp

Comparison of stress sources and coping strategies in children practicing judo and their non-training peers.

BACKGROUND: The age of 10 to 15 is a period of intense psychosocial changes, often accompanied by increased emotional tension. To date, there is a lack of in-depth analyses in which stress responses and coping strategies are compared between physically active children and their peers not engaged in regular sports training. The study was grounded in transactional and sport-specific coping frameworks and aimed to compare students practicing judo with those not involved in any sports discipline in terms of stress sources, symptoms and coping strategies. Understanding how stress perception and cop

Innovative, Technology-Driven, Digital Tools for Managing Pediatric Urinary Incontinence: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence affects approximately 7% to 10% of children during the day and 9% to 12% of children during the night. Treatment mainly involves lifestyle advice and behavioral methods, but motivation and adherence are low. Traditional tools such as pen-and-paper solutions may feel outdated and no longer meet the needs of today's "digital native" children. Meanwhile, digital interventions have already shown effectiveness in other pediatric health care areas. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify and map innovative, technology-driven, digital tools for managing pedi

Ineffective Homeschooling in a Child with a Learning Disability.

Charles is a 10-year-old African-American male who presents to the Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic for evaluation of his learning. His primary care provider (PCP) was concerned that his developmental delays were negatively affecting his ability to engage in his homeschooling curriculum and also that his mother seemed unaware of the severity of his delays. Neuropsychological evaluation had been recommended by the PCP several times in the past, but the family declined. At one point, the PCP had considered potential child protective services (CPS) referral for medical neglect because o

Suicidality and gambling among young adults in Great Britain: results from a cross-sectional online survey.

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates in young people have increased in England and Wales since 2010. There are a range of possible explanations for this increase, and problem gambling has been suggested as a potential risk factor. We aimed to examine the association between suicidality (suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts) and problem gambling specifically for young adults in Great Britain, where gambling has become more widely available and normalised in the past two decades. METHODS: We analysed data from the Emerging Adults Gambling Survey: a cross-sectional, online, non-probability sample survey

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Characteristics of Play Associated with Head Impact Severity During Tackling in Youth Football.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade, concussions and subconcussive brain trauma in football and other high impact sports have become of increasing concern. Tackling, in youth football, accounts for a high proportion of head impacts and injuries, including concussions. Thus, minimizing head impact severity during tackling may help in reducing concussion risk and subconcussive brain trauma. However, it is unknown how discrete aspects of play in youth football relate to head impact severity during tackling. METHODS: 25 youth tackle football players (12.9 ± 0.6 yr) wore helmets outfitted with the He

Dataset of perceptions of waiting in a virtual reality (VR) doctor's office receptionist queue with and without notifications on the reason for a delay.

In this paper we present our virtual reality dataset for understanding how participants perceive waiting in a queue to confirm an appointment at a virtual doctor's office. Our data studies two scenarios, namely when the participant has been provided a reason on why there is a delay by a virtual receptionist and when they have not been notified of the reason for the delay. In our study, the reason for the delay is an issue with the virtual receptionist's computer system. Our dataset consists of 30 participants interacting in the virtual doctor's office using a Meta Quest Pro. We designed the vi

Utilizing Virtual Reality for Gender-Affirming Voice Training: Surveying the Attitudes and Perspectives of Potential Consumers.

BACKGROUND: Undertaking voice and communication training is an important part of the gender-affirming journey for many trans, gender-diverse and non-binary individuals. Training supports the alignment of voice with gender identity helping to reduce gender dysphoria as individuals are better able to connect with their voices. However, for training to be effective, regular practice is needed and the demands of training can often be difficult to meet. AIMS: To investigate the interest, attitudes and perspectives on the use of immersive virtual reality (VR) to support gender-affirming voice and c

Physical activity for the management of obesity in children up to the age of 9 years.

RATIONALE: Childhood obesity is a major global public health concern. Although physical activity is recognised as an effective non-pharmacological intervention, most existing evidence synthesis has primarily focused on the role of physical activity in preventing obesity, with limited attention given to its effects on managing children with obesity. OBJECTIVES: To synthesise evidence on the benefits and harms of physical activity for the management of obesity in children up to 9 years of age. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and two trial registries from 2012 to 2 June 20
