[Malaria following surgery in an endemic region].

The frequency of malaria attacks after surgery was determined during a 3-month period in the surgical ward of Bobo-Dioulasso hospital (Burkina Faso). The survey was carried out during the period of highest malarial morbidity. All adolescents and adults admitted to the ward were included, except women undergoing Cesarian section and patients who died in the perisurgical period. Patients were questioned as to the use of antimalarial drugs during the days prior to admission, their occupation and their place of residence. Malarial parasites were tested for routinely on D0, D2 and D5, and every day

Biomarkers of Alzheimer Disease in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Effect of Adenotonsillectomy.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Obese children are at increased risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and both of these conditions are associated with an increased risk for end-organ morbidities. Both OSA and obesity (OB) have been associated with increased risk for Alzheimer disease (AD). This study aimed to assess whether OSA and OB lead to increased plasma levels of 2 AD markers amyloid β protein 42 (Aβ42) and pre-senilin 1 (PS1). METHODS: Fasting morning plasma samples from otherwise healthy children with a diagnosis of OB, OSA, or both (OSA+OB), and controls, and in a subset of children wi

Effect of adenotonsillectomy on ADHD symptoms of children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and sleep disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the most common etiologic agent for the obstruction of the upper airways in children, which might be associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood. Despite the concurrence of these two conditions, i.e., obstruction of the airways and ADHD, no exact etiologic relationship has been established between adenotonsillectomy (AT) and ADHD symptoms. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of AT on the ADHD symptoms in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and sleep disorde

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children is often caused by obstruction of the upper airway due to hypertrophy of the adenoids and palatine tonsils. Between October 1988 and December 1991, 50 children (34 males, 16 females) visited our department due to attacks of sleep apnea and underwent adenotomy or adeno-tonsillectomy. Respiratory monitoring during sleep was performed before and after operation, and the usefulness of the surgery was evaluated. Before operation, 27/ 50 children (54.0%) were diagnosed as having OSAS. Their age distribution showed peaks at the ages of 4 and 5 years

Obstructive sleep apnea: the use of nasal CPAP in 80 children.

This is a retrospective review of children 15 years of age or younger, who underwent overnight sleep studies between 1980 and 1993. All were diagnosed and treated for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Overnight studies were performed for OSA in 413 children. One hundred seventy-five (42.4%) children were treated with adenotonsillectomy and 80 (19.4%) with nasal mask continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). The proportion of male children was greater than expected in both the entire study group (69%, p < 0.001) and in those treated with nCPAP for OSA (71% p < 0.001). There was no significant d

Perioperative Management and Outcomes in Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurocognitive disorder characterized by impairments in communication and socialization. There are little data comparing the differences in perioperative outcomes in children with and without ASD. We hypothesized that children with ASD would have higher postoperative pain scores than those without ASD. METHODS: Pediatric patients undergoing ambulatory tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, ophthalmological surgery, general surgery, and urologic procedures between 2016 and 2021 were included in this retrospective cohort study. The prevalence and impact of otitis media with effusion in children admitted for adeno-tonsillectomy at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, Pretoria, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a leading cause of acquired hearing loss in children worldwide. However, previous South African studies have consistently reported the local paediatric OME prevalence to be lower than typically published in international literature. Furthermore, no South African studies have investigated OME in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of OME in children admitted for adeno-tonsillectomy at our institution in Pretoria, South Africa. In addition, the study sought to gauge the impact of O

The effect of adenotonsillectomy on right ventricle function and pulmonary artery pressure in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVES: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) is the most common cause of upper airway obstruction in children. Severe upper airway obstruction may have an effect on chronic alveolar hypoventilation, which consequently may lead to right ventricle (RV) dysfunction induced by hypoxemic pulmonary vasoconstriction. The investigators aimed to study RV function and mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) in patients with ATH who were undergoing adenotonsillectomy by using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE). METHODS: The study examined 27 children with ATH who had a mean age of 8 ± 2 years. The subj

Clinical outcomes in a high nursing ratio ward setting for children with obstructive sleep apnea at high risk after adenotonsillectomy.

BACKGROUND: In 2012 clinical management of children having adenotonsillectomy (AT) for suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at our tertiary centre changed based on previous research: children with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at increased risk of post-operative respiratory adverse events (AE) identified using home overnight oximetry or polysomnography (PSG) were managed post-operatively in a high nurse/patient ratio unit in the ward (high acuity unit, HAU) rather than in the intensive care unit (ICU) as previously. OBJECTIVES: To examine the post-operative respiratory AE post AT in
