Multiple pituitary hormone abnormalities, fever, behavioral problems, seizures and apnoic spells in a 6-year old girl.

UNLABELLED: A 6-year old girl was examined having two years previously presented a transient Cushing's syndrome, followed by recurrent hyponatremia, attributed to inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH). The brain MRI showed no abnormalities on repeated examinations, except for a suggestion of empty sella syndrome. During the past two years she also presented recurrent episodes of a prolonged febrile illness of unknown origin. All investigations related to infectious, autoimmune neoplastic diseases, histiocytosis-X or neurosarcoidosis were negative and the fever was characterized as central. The p

Immersive virtual reality for older adults with mild cognitive impairment, dementia, or cognitive frailty: a systematic review and narrative synthesis (2019-2025).

BACKGROUND: Immersive virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used to support cognition, mobility, and emotional well‑being in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, or frailty. Evidence is expanding but fragmented across small randomized and feasibility trials. We synthesized recent studies to clarify benefits, risks, and implementation considerations. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020, we searched PubMed and CINAHL from 1 January 2019 to 15 October 2025. Eligible studies enrolled adults aged ≥ 65 years with MCI, dementia, or frailty/cognitive frailty; delivered immersive or

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Patients With Pathologically Confirmed Comorbid Alzheimer Disease and Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the clinical presentation in patients with comorbid Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) neuropathology, despite frequent comorbidity of neurodegenerative diseases on autopsy. In other neurodegenerative conditions, multiple pathologies alter the presentation of neuropsychiatric symptoms, complicating clinical care. We examined whether neuropsychiatric symptoms differ in patients with comorbid ADNC/FTLD compared with patients with each pathology alone. METHODS: This was a retrospective exam

Exploring Vestibulo-Masseteric Pathways: An Insight into Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is an autonomic reaction to sensory conflict among vestibular, somatosensory, and visual inputs, manifesting as drowsiness, dizziness, discomfort, nausea, pallor, sweating, headache, malaise, vomiting, and apathy. Although vestibular function in motion sickness has been probed using various vestibular tests, the utility of masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential (mVEMP)-a novel assay of the vestibulo-masseteric reflex elicited via masseter muscle stimulation-remains largely unexplored. PURPOSE: This study sought to explore mVEMP responses among individuals wi

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Although neuropsychiatric symptoms are not part of diagnostic criteria for sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), a few retrospective studies and our clinical experience have suggested they are prominent and often occur early. The objective of our study was to assess prospectively the neuropsychiatric features in sCJD (and their impact on caregivers) and compare them with five other neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), progressive supranuclear palsy, behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and semantic variant primary progressiv

Identification of Age and Underlying Disease Characteristics in Patients with Mild to Moderate Depression Comorbid with Parkinson's Disease: A Retrospective Case-control Study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a widely recognized neuropsychiatric condition that often occurs as a comorbidity with various medical illnesses, including neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aimed to identify the age of onset and underlying disease characteristics associated with patients exhibiting mild to moderate depression comorbid with PD. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 114 elderly patients (age ≥65 years) diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The patients were divided into two groups: the non-depressed group (n = 65) and the mild to mo

Harnessing digital health interventions to address the heterogeneity of depression: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Depression affects over 229 million people worldwide and ranks among the leading causes of disability and death, particularly in young adults, where suicide is a top contributor to mortality. Standard diagnostic and treatment approaches often overlook the marked clinical and biological heterogeneity of depression, resulting in low first-line remission rates and prolonged trial-and-error care, underscoring an urgent need for precision strategies in mental health practice. OBJECTIVE: This review explores the recent literature (January 2020-September 2025) on personalized digital hea

Social cognition in Korsakoff's syndrome: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Korsakoff's syndrome is an alcohol-related neurocognitive disorder characterized by episodic memory impairments, apathy, confabulations and poor illness-insight. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate mean effect sizes of performance in social cognition in people with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) compared with controls. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted in May 2024 to identify research articles that examined social cognition in patients with KS and control groups. Weighted effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for the three levels of social cognition: emo

Clinical Phenotypes Associated With Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: A Study of 45,013 UK Biobank Participants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is the most common pathology underlying vascular cognitive impairment. Although other clinical features of cSVD are increasingly recognized, it is likely that certain symptoms are being overlooked. A comprehensive description of cSVD associations with clinical phenotypes at scale is lacking. The objective of this study was to conduct a large-scale, hypothesis-free study of associations between cSVD and clinical phenotypes in UK Biobank (UKB). METHODS: We included participants from the UKB imaging study who had available informati

Frontotemporal Dementia Differential Diagnosis in Clinical Practice: A Single-Center Retrospective Review of Frontal Behavioral Referrals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many neurodegenerative syndromes present with impairment of frontal networks, especially frontoinsular networks affecting social and emotional cognition. People presenting with frontal network impairments may be considered for a frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis. We sought to examine the diagnostic mix of patients referred with frontal network impairments to a single cognitive neurology service. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients seen between January 2010 and December 2019 at the Eastern Cognitive Disorders Clinic, a quaternary cogni

The clinical and neuropsychological profiles of Alzheimer's disease with white matter hyperintensity in North China.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often exhibit characteristic clinical manifestations, particularly neuropsychiatric symptoms. Previous studies have shown that white matter hyperintensity (WMH) is strongly associated with AD progression, as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and neuropsychological characteristics of AD patients with WMH. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 104 18-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission computed tomography (18FDG-PET-CT)-defined AD patients treated at Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from J

Understanding youths' concerns about climate change: a binational qualitative study of ecological burden and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has been shown to have long-term effects on mental health, yet, to date, there have been few studies on how children and adolescents experience and respond to ecological changes and how and why they engage in climate action. We explored empirically young people's views about climate change and how distinct cultural contexts influence individual climate action. METHODS: We invited children and adolescents (ages 7 to 18) and their caregivers from the general population in the United States and France to participate in semi-structured focus groups. We recruited 74 part

Prospective observational cohort study of factors influencing trial participation in people with motor neuron disease (FIT-participation-MND): a protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder with limited treatment options. The Motor Neuron Disease Systematic Multi-Arm Randomised Adaptive Trial (MND-SMART) is a multisite UK trial seeking to address the paucity in effective disease-modifying drugs for people with MND (pwMND). Historically, neurological trials have been plagued by suboptimal recruitment and high rates of attrition. Failure to recruit and/or retain participants can cause insufficiently representative samples, terminated trials or invalid conclusions. This study inves

Effectiveness and safety of donepezil in Hispanic patients with Alzheimer's disease: a 12-week open-label study.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics represent 10% of the U.S. population and are the fastest growing group. Studies show a higher prevalence and incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Hispanics than in the non-Hispanic white population, with an earlier age of onset. Among the currently estimated 200,000 Hispanics with AD, a significant number remain undiagnosed and untreated, and Hispanic participation in AD clinical trials has been historically low. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of donepezil hydrochloride (donepezil) in Hispanics with mild-to-moderate AD. METHODS: In this multicenter, ope

First detection of autochthonous Lamanema chavezi infections in llamas (Lama glama) in Europe.

Lamanema chavezi is one of the most pathogenic nematode species of South American camelids (SAC), with a homoxenous life cycle involving enterohepatic migration of its larvae in the host. So far, it has been found in the Americas and New Zealand. The first autochthonous L. chavezi infections in SAC in Europe are reported here. On a SAC farm in Germany, a 15-month-old male llama with a short history of diarrhoea died in September 2017, followed nine months later by a three-year-old female llama with a history of emaciation, apathy, anorexia, anaemia and tetraparesis with retained sensorium.
