[A case of myeloradiculitis as a complication of visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum].

A 35-year-old man noticed a tingling sensation and subsequent slight weakness in the distal part of the left lower extremities, which extended to the left thigh over the following 8 months, when he developed a urinary disturbance. He was admitted to a local hospital and diagnosed as having myelitis, because of the presence of a gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced lesion in the lumbar spinal cord corresponding to the tenth thoracic vertebra (Th10) level. The symptoms disappeared along with some residual sensory disturbance following intravenous administration of 1 g of methylprednisolone (IVMP) for 3 days

Necessity and Content of Swing Phase Gait Coordination Training Post Stroke; A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Background/Problem: Standard neurorehabilitation and gait training has not proved effective in restoring normal gait coordination for many stroke survivors. Rather, persistent gait dyscoordination occurs, with associated poor function, and progressively deteriorating quality of life. One difficulty is the array of symptoms exhibited by stroke survivors with gait deficits. Some researchers have addressed lower limb weakness following stroke with exercises designed to strengthen muscles, with the expectation of improving gait. However, gait dyscoordination in many stroke survivors ap

Strength deficits and flexion range of motion following primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction differ between quadriceps and hamstring autografts.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with a quadriceps tendon (QT) could achieve faster postoperative recovery compared with hamstring tendon (HT) ACL reconstruction. METHODS: Thirty-seven QT patients were matched for gender, age and preinjury activity level with 74 HT patients. A 6-month postoperative assessment included standardised reported outcome measures: patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) (International Knee Documentation Committee-subjective knee evaluation form, Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-knee related quality of life subs

Sports activity level after ACL reconstruction is predicted by vastus medialis or vastus medialis obliquus thickness, single leg triple hop distance or 6-m timed hop, and quality of life score.

PURPOSE: Recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may take > 2 years, and younger athletes have higher re-injury risk. The purpose of this prospective longitudinal study was to determine how the early to mid-term Tegner Activity Level Scale (TALS) scores of athletically active males ≥ 2 years post-ACLR follow-up was predicted by bilateral isokinetic knee extensor and flexor torque, quadriceps femoris thickness, single leg hop test performance, and self-reported knee function (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS); International Knee Documentation Committee

Does a Lower Limb Balance Test after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Have a Significant Correlation with Postoperative Clinical Score, Stability, and Functional Performance Test?

BACKGROUND: Lower limb balance ability is reduced after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, the recovery of balance based on functional test scores after ACLR is not known because the correlation between balance and clinical scores remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the correlation between lower limb balance assessed by functional test and clinical knee test scores after ACLR. METHODS: We evaluated lower limb balance using the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) of the Biodex Balance System (BBS). Patients underwent clinical tests to evaluate the knee, including

Differences in brain structure and theta burst stimulation-induced plasticity implicate the corticomotor system in loss of function after musculoskeletal injury.

Traumatic musculoskeletal injury (MSI) may involve changes in corticomotor structure and function, but direct evidence is needed. To determine the corticomotor basis of MSI, we examined interactions among skeletomotor function, corticospinal excitability, corticomotor structure (cortical thickness and white matter microstructure), and intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS)-induced plasticity. Nine women with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) 3.2 ± 1.1 yr prior to the study and 11 matched controls (CON) completed an MRI session followed by an offline plasticity-probing pr

Knee extensor strength does not protect against incident knee symptoms at 30 months in the multicenter knee osteoarthritis (MOST) cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Knee extensor weakness has not been associated consistently with the risk for incident knee pain. Additionally, the balance of hamstring-to-quadriceps strength (H:Q ratio) may affect risk and has not been studied. The authors determined whether knee extensor weakness or muscle imbalance is a risk factor for development of frequent knee pain or stiffness and whether the effect is modified by lower limb alignment. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: Community. PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling adults ages 50-79 years with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis based on obesity, knee in

Effects of functional electrical stimulation-induced lower extremity cycling on bone density of spinal cord-injured patients.

Spinal cord-injured (SCI) patients are at increased risk for fractures secondary to neurogenic osteoporosis. Earlier research claimed physical conditioning resulted in a decreased incidence or reversal of neurogenic osteoporosis. This study evaluated the effects of functional electrical stimulation-induced lower extremity cycling (FESILEC) on the bone densities of SCI patients using dual-energy x/ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The study consisted of 12 healthy male SCI patients, aged 23 to 46 (x +/- SD, 34 +/- 6) yr. The patients were post-traumatic, complete, spastic SCI; time postinjury ranged f

The effect of fatigue on asymmetry between lower limbs in functional performances in elite child taekwondo athletes.

BACKGROUND: Inter-limb asymmetry above a certain threshold in functional performance indicates increased injury risk in sports. Fatigue has been found to increase bilateral asymmetry in lower-limb jumping performance among high-school and adult athletes, whereas this impact has not been examined in child athletes. This study aimed to examine the effect of fatigue on inter-limb asymmetry in functional performances in elite Taekwondo athletes aged between 9 and 11 years. METHODS: Performance of single-leg jumps, Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), and muscle (hamstring and gastrocnemius) flexib

In vivo magnetic resonance imaging measurement of tibiofemoral relation with different knee flexion angles after single- and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions.

PURPOSE: Double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction has been shown to restore better kinematics in vitro, but it is uncertain whether this technique can achieve this in vivo. We investigated whether anatomic double-bundle ACL reconstruction can restore a better tibiofemoral relation in the sagittal plane under static unloading conditions. METHODS: The tibiofemoral relation was assessed with an open magnetic resonance imaging scanner (0.5 T) in 15 patients with anatomic double-bundle reconstruction (double-bundle group) and 14 patients with single-bundle reconstruction (sing

Isolated posterior cruciate ligament injuries associated with closed tibial shaft fractures: a report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Knee ligament injuries associated with tibia shaft fractures are usually neglected and treatment is delayed. To our knowledge, no case presentation discusses the clinical result of closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant ipsilateral isolated PCL injury. In this literature, we report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant PCL injury and discuss the treatment options. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant posterior cruciate ligament

Load carriage using packs: a review of physiological, biomechanical and medical aspects.

This paper reviews the biomedical aspects of transporting loads in packs and offers suggestions for improving load-carriage capability. Locating the load mass as close as possible to the body center of gravity appears to result in the lowest energy cost when carrying a pack. Thus, the double pack (half the load on the front of the body and half the load on the back) has a lower energy cost than the backpack. However, backpacks provide greater versatility in most situations. The energy cost of walking with backpack loads increases progressively with increases in load mass, body mass, walking sp

Quadriceps tendon autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is associated with high revision rates: results from the Danish Knee Ligament Registry.

PURPOSE: The quadriceps tendon (QT) has recently gained interest as an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) autograft. There is a paucity of data from large cohort studies on failures and revision rates after ACLR using the QT graft. The purpose of the present study is to use the Danish Knee Ligament Reconstruction Registry (DKRR) to compare revision rates, objective knee stability and subjective clinical outcomes in patients who have undergone ACLR with QT, hamstring tendon (HT), and patellar tendon (PT) as a graft for ACLR. It was hypothesized that QT autografts would result in s
