Temporal Healing of Achilles Tendons After Injury in Rodents Depends on Surgical Treatment and Activity.

INTRODUCTION: Achilles tendon ruptures affect 15 of 100,000 women and 55 of 100,000 men each year. Controversy continues to exist regarding optimal treatment and rehabilitation protocols. The objective of this study was to investigate the temporal effects of surgical repair and immobilization or activity on Achilles tendon healing and limb function after complete transection in rodents. METHODS: Injured tendons were repaired (n = 64) or left nonrepaired (n = 64). The animals in both cohorts were further randomized into groups immobilized in plantar flexion for 1, 3, or 6 weeks that later resu

Contributions of lower extremity kinematics to trunk accelerations during moderate treadmill running.

BACKGROUND: Trunk accelerations during running provide useful information about movement economy and injury risk. However, there is a lack of data regarding the key biomechanical contributors to these accelerations. The purpose was to establish the biomechanical variables associated with root mean square (RMS) accelerations of the trunk. METHODS: Eighteen healthy males (24.0 ± 4.2 yr; 1.78 ± 0.07 m; 79.7 ± 14.8 kg) performed treadmill running with high resolution accelerometer measurement at the lumbar spine and full-body optical motion capture. We collected 60 sec of data at three speeds (2.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (nodular tenosynovitis). A study of 207 cases to compare the large joint group with the common digit group.

Clinicopathologic, enzyme histochemical, and electron microscopic findings in 207 cases (208 lesions) of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS) are presented. The GCTTS could be divided into two groups according to the anatomic location, the first occurring in the digits (digit group, 182 cases) and the second, in the larger joints (large joint group, 25 cases). In the majority of cases of the digit group, the tumor occurred in one of the fingers (158 cases), whereas in the large joint group, the tumor was common in the ankle (10 cases) and knee joints (8 cases). The lesion was more common

Percutaneous forefoot surgery.

Percutaneous methods can be used to perform many surgical procedures on the soft tissues and bones of the forefoot, thereby providing treatment options for all the disorders and deformities seen at this site. Theoretical advantages of percutaneous surgery include lower morbidity rates and faster recovery with immediate weight bearing. Disadvantages are the requirement for specific equipment, specific requirements for post-operative management, and lengthy learning curve. At present, percutaneous hallux valgus correction is mainly achieved with chevron osteotomy of the first metatarsal, for whi

The effect of heel elevation on the stiffness gradient index of the digital flexor tendons in the equine forelimb of clinically normal horses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of heel elevation on in vivo measurement of stiffness gradients by means of acoustoelastography in the digital flexor tendons of clinically normal horses. ANIMALS: 15 clinically normal horses. PROCEDURES: For each horse, stiffness gradient index (SGI) for superficial digital flexor tendons (SDFT) and deep digital flexor tendons (DDFT) were evaluated in both forelimbs at 0, 4 and 8 degrees of heel elevation. Acoustoelastography (AEG) was used for data acquisition at three sites, approximately 6, 12, and 18 cm distal to the accessory carpal bone in the metacar

A novel NTRK1 splice site variant causing congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis in a Chinese family.

BACKGROUND: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA, OMIM #256800), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type Ⅳ (HSAN-IV), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by recurrent episodic fevers, anhidrosis, insensitivity to noxious stimuli, self-mutilating behavior and intellectual disability. CIPA can be caused by the variants in NTRK1 gene, which encodes a high-affinity tyrosine kinase receptor for nerve growth factor. To ascertain the hereditary cause of a patient with CIPA accompanied by the additional symptoms of mild growth retardation, pron

Randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate on pain intensity and quality of life in head and neck cancer patients suffering from cetuximab-induced rhagades during radioimmunotherapy: the support trial.

BACKGROUND: Cetuximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Skin reactions are the most common side effects of cetuximab. Rhagades of the tips of the fingers and toes, the heels and especially the interphalangeal joints are one of the most frightening and painful dermatological side effects that may develop from EGFR-inhibitor therapy. Rhagades are characterized by pain, severe tenderness and poor healing response. They are challenging to treat. Thus, rhagades often poses the most significant threat to the quality of life (QoL) for these patient

Gait analysis before or after varus osteotomy of the femur for hip osteoarthritis.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: Intertrochanteric varus osteotomy of the femur for hip osteoarthritis is expected to bring improved congruity and increased weight-bearing surface area of the hip joint. Before surgery, we usually make a tracing on a paper using an anteroposterior roentgenogram of the hip to simulate the operating procedures and obtain better conditions in the hip. Nevertheless, there have been some cases in which this procedure does not provide satisfactory postoperative results in terms of relief of pain or locomotion, with long-term limp due to weakness of the hip abductor muscle grou

The perception of the common cold, and other ailments and discomforts, as related to age.

Perception of the common cold and other discomforts was studied as a function fo age among 456 normals ranging in age from 18 to 82. Respondents completed a questionnaire which deal with the frequency and duration of their colds, their symptoms and treatments-and, finally, with the perceived severity of various discomforts. Though older Rs were found to suffer more than younger with body aches, the former had less difficulty with a variety of other physical and psychological symptoms-and also contracted relatively few colds. Older Rs treated their colds less often with Contac and Dristan, but

Congenital Knee Dislocation: A Rare Orthopedic Enigma in Rural Nepal.

Congenital knee dislocation (CKD) (genu recurvatum congenitum) is a rare neonatal orthopedic deformity characterized by hyperextension of the knee joint and potentially associated with intrauterine mechanical factors, quadriceps contracture, or syndromic disorders. Early recognition is essential, as prompt conservative management can prevent long-term disability and reduce the need for surgical intervention. The objective of this single case report is to describe a rare presentation of bilateral congenital knee dislocation managed successfully through early conservative treatment in a rural an

Rheumatological complaints in H syndrome: from inflammatory profiling to target treatment in a case study.

BACKGROUND: H Syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the SLC29A3 gene. It is characterized by a wide range of clinical manifestations, many of which are related to the immune-rheumatological field. These include scleroderma-like skin changes, deforming arthritis, and enlarged lymph nodes. The condition also features cardiac and endocrine defects, as well as hearing loss, for which the immune pathogenesis appears less clear. Immunomodulatory medications have been shown to improve many symptoms in recent experiences. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old girl

The effect of a collagen-elastin matrix on adhesion formation after flexor tendon repair in a rabbit model.

PURPOSE: The outcome of flexor tendon surgery is negatively affected by the formation of adhesions which can occur during the healing of the tendon repair. In this experimental study, we sought to prevent adhesion formation by wrapping a collagen-elastin scaffold around the repaired tendon segment. METHODS: In 28 rabbit hind legs, the flexor tendons of the third and fourth digits were cut and then repaired using a two-strand suture technique on the fourth digit and a four-strand technique on the third digit. Rabbits were randomly assigned to study and control groups. In the control group, the

Long-term evaluation of donor site morbidity after free fibula transfer.

Our aim was to evaluate the long-term morbidity at the donor site after harvest of free fibular flaps. From a total of 165 patients, we were able to examine (not randomly) 62 donor regions in 57 patients (33 men and 24 women) 2-167 months (mean 45 months) after fibular transfer. Patients' individual risk factors and any disturbances of healing, and dysfunction of the toes, were recorded. The Kitaoka ankle-hindfoot score was used for evaluation of functional impairment. Thirteen donor regions displayed prolonged wound healing, eight of which needed revision of the wounds. Eight (14%) had abnorm

Case report: Rhodococcus erythropolis osteomyelitis in the toe.

The Rhodococcus species rarely cause musculoskeletal infections, with only two cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who had an infection develop after first metatarsophalangeal joint fusion. A year after surgery, she continued to have pain and swelling with nonunion. She underwent revision of the arthrodesis and tissue samples from surgery revealed Rhodococcus erythropolis. The patient's symptoms improved with oral antibiotics. One year after the revision surgery, the fusion had united. We believe this is the first report of a case of a musculoskeletal in
